I doubt Ford had any supporters as rabid as Ghost is for Trump but it did NOT hurt Reagan as we know.
Let Ron run as well as Cruz, Rubio et al.
Trump can again explain how he has bigger hands than Rubio, doesn't lie as much as Ted and how Ron is an ungrateful backstabbing POS.
Or he can run on the many good things he did before COVID and the left destroyed it all.

How do you know Trump didn't attempt to do that?

I've been watching Trump do this for 6+ years. Every time he makes what seems like a wild claim, he later has evidence that backs up the claim.

That wasn’t following debate rules. That was….caught with pants down. He was asked again in the debate and had nothing. There were other comments each candidate made that were addressed.

What I don't get at all is some people saying this is happening because the left and media suckered Trump into attacking DeSantis, who did nothing.
Based on past performance, here's what I think Trump did: He got EVIDENCE that DeSantis has been talking to Ryan and the establishment hacks about running in 24.
Trump calls DeSantis, tells him he knows what he's doing, tells him he thinks that's a bad idea.
I dunno if DeSantis fessed up or denied. Based on Trump's actions, I suspect DeSantis denied activity that Trump had proof of.

Now all of Trump's enemies will line up to endorse DeSantis. And the media will be more than happy to give them airtime to talk about it.
Spoiler alert: Trump's enemies are OUR enemies. DeSantis is about to be rebranded from being Trump-lite, to being just another RINO. And if that happens, he has no one to blame but himself.
DeSantis has about a one week window, if that, to come out and denounce all this and verify he's not running in 24.
If he misses that window, his political career is done.

Edit to add that I guess the charging documents and other elements of the legal process will force the disclosure of the government’s case against him, much of which the DOJ would rather not divulge. Other than that I struggle to see how this could be a positive development for Trump.

DeSantis doesn’t need to switch parties. He is in his 40s and literally has decades left to run for POTUS. Trump is the one I can see starting his own party and running to enact revenge on the GOP.

FOX, CNN, MSNBC, Disney, etc. All of them had a hand. Their executives have openly admitted that Trump was a highly profitable ratings bonanza. The endless wall-to-wall coverage they gave him helped Trump win.
Aside from Fox, those other networks believe they made mistakes that inadvertently may have helped Trump. Everyone of them, save Fox, was in the bag for Hillary.
For them to act like they did something on purpose for the reasons that you mentioned is beyond ridiculous.
If you are saying that the mainstream media intentionally helped Trump win the primary because they thought he was unelectable in the general election, I completely agree and have said so in the past.
