Chicago would be my guess those folk hail from the Delta area and are subconsciously going home.
The article I read mentioned that as well. The migration north after the Civil War during Reconstruction, many from here moved to Chicago apparently.

That's where our place is now. We are on a canal that is directly connected to Salt Creek. There used to be a water tower on the island we are on, to give you a point of reference. We considered a place that we found near Cedar Key and another in Suwannee on Salt Creek but ultimately decided to build a home where the cabin once stood.
We're south of Guntersville. If I had it to do over again, I'd have probably sold this property and built on Guntersville or in the hills east of Huntsville. But I do LOVE the water.

I can't remember what year it was, but the water tower was taken down when the township got a water and sewer hookup plant. We are extremely remote if you'll remember. This island is the only one with mailboxes, the rest have to rent a PO Box at the Post Office near the end of SR349. There is really only one full time restaurant, one convenience store, if you need gas, you'll have to pump it at the marina. The closest grocery and hardware store is 24 miles north. Cedar Keys has more amenities than we do but also more out of town invasions, so I'm good with the remote factor. There is literally no land left to build on, one company owns 13,000 acres of timber wilderness up the road, the other side of the road is a National Wildlife Refuge. So the only way to buy real estate in close proximity to waterfront is an existing resale. And it's gotten pricy! That's pretty amazing actually. The Lower Suwannee area?
I don't recall the water tower but we would have been neighbors.
100% agree.Chicago would be my guess those folk hail from the Delta area and are subconsciously going home.

We didn't have any cell phone reception until around 2013 or 14 I believe. Verizon was the only carrier with a signal up until about a year ago. AT&T finally built a tower down here as well. It would be tough to raise a family here as the closest school is 22 miles up the road. The school bus runs here but there are few children to interact with.It was pricey then. I can only imagine what it is now ~12 years later.
The remoteness was nice but it was a concern for my wife as we had 3 small children at the time. I couldn't get a signal on my phone back then (Verizon). I owned a cell tower maintenance and construction company at the time and I had a plan to fix that if we bought the place. It needed a lot of work too.The vast majority of the coastline is a wildlife refuge or a preserve of one sort or another from Hernando Beach to Mexico Beach.
I should adopt you. You are so clueless. The View would make it out like a feel good story. Mean Tweeter adopts clueless son. 😂 Jacksonville residents, those with young children are fleeing south into St Johns County in droves due to the BS city council and DCSB errors. These people can put their children into non woke schools and still commute into the city and the business district and not have to deal with woke bullshit. Deegan is going to be pilloried, shot with both musket balls and cannister at short range. In other words, it is going to be a real shit show like Chicago's Creature of the Black Lagoon except out of a beach condo. Jacksonville's demographics have mostly changed because morons fleeing woke blue states have not learned their tough love lessons yet.
"Nobody I know personally ever moved because of politics." That's about as stupid a rebuttal as you can make. I guess your friends and acquaintances sure covers everybody. I asked him months ago why so many people were leaving California. His answer was...he didn't. He, of I answer all questions, bs.I should adopt you. You are so clueless.
