While it's a thinly veiled ploy (it might help bring some business back to the states) the main goal is "you fumgoo on me, I fumgoo on you". The goal is to make the balance of trade fairer. So many countries tariff our goods. Canada, our milk. Europe and China, our vehicles. The goal is to get them to drop their tariffs and renegotiate. Anything these other countries can't make or produce themselves, they tariff the hell out of our exported goods. With Mexico, it's more about them policing their border than trade itself. That is working. It's the threat of tariffs to get what we want, not the actual taxation for revenue's sake. It's punative damages to other countries until they drop their tariffs. Does it hurt here? Initially, hell yes.The tariff wars are dumb, because there’s no point to them. What are we trying to accomplish? If they’re to raise revenue then why are we slapping them on and off every other day? If they’re to incentivize US manufacturing, then I would suggest some advance guidance would have been helpful since we dont currently have the infrastructure to start making cars here (for instance) that are currently made in Mexico. If it’s for border security ok, we got Mexico and Canada to surge forces to the border and crossings are supposedly down more than 100 percent so why are we announcing new 50 percent tariffs on Canada. If it’s for fentanyl, I’ll tell ya, I’d rather have the Dow at $40k and to hell with the fentanyl abusers.
Basically I think it’s just because Trump refuses to back down on them and I think it’s a major self inflicted injury to the US economy.
Republican Congress won’t survive a stock market crash and neither will the rest of Trump’s agenda. This is a dumb thing to get hung up on.
Canada and the US have tariffed each other for specific industries. As a whole, we export more to Canada than we buy. And yes Canada did walk back it’s electricity tariffs today, so that was good but they only imposed them in the first place in response to us and in the meantime the stock market lost about half a trillion. While it's a thinly veiled ploy (it might help bring some business back to the states) the main goal is "you fumgoo on me, I fumgoo on you". The question is, who will blink first? I doubt it's Trump. He'll double down. 😂
This is how Trump negotiates. He has something he wants from Canada, so he targets something THEY want to keep (tariffs).Canada tariffs TF out of us. It's tit for tat. Like calling out the EU for not paying their fair share of the NATO tab. It's not wrong ...
I’m still not over him being gone
I could here that pin pop that bubble from my desk yesterday. 😂 The market was about as bloated artificially as it could get by the end of 2024. Reminded me of 1999. We may see a retreat back into solid equities with real earnings instead of some of these fattened pigs with "promises" of future earnings (like those stupid brokeass meme stocks). The best argument I’ve heard for the tariffs is that Trump is trying to pop the bubble in the stock market and ease inflation, so we can cut rates and print as necessary heading into 2026 elections. That makes some sense, but it’s tough to deflate bubbles just a little bit.
No Fres. I think it is a good idea, but going at the problem with a bull dozer and attacking w/o any thought what damage can be done is the work of those who don't care what happens to good people and organizations.. Both Trump and Musk IMO are looking to enrich the rich and themselves and the hell with everyone else, ie most of the people. The top 5% of the people in this country know that Trump and the people In Congress will be fine whatever he does so they go along with it, the rest don't know what to do. Just my thoughts my friend.
Inflation is now down to 1.4%. Same rate it was when Trump left office. The best argument I’ve heard for the tariffs is that Trump is trying to pop the bubble in the stock market and ease inflation,
You do realize that since the crack down on the Southern border, the illegal drugs have started flowing in from Canada. And after Canada didn't react, he started with Tariffs. Besides, the tariffs from Canada on milk/dairy and timber are soooooooooo high, none of those are crossing into Canada. What were the #s I hear the other day. Canada pays $30,000,000,000 in Tariffs and the US pays $350,000,000,000.Two stand out to me.
1. Picking a fight with Canada. It's like picking a fight with one of your better friends. WTH?
2. Renaming the Gulf. Totally unnecessary. Makes us look insecure.
What are you all's picks?
ART OF THE DEAL...Trump plays this better than anyone alive. One day some will figure out exactly what the tariffs ate for. Its really not very hard to understand.
I think you are ENTIRELY missing the point of tariffs. The idea is to get all the Countries that are charging us..to STOP. Or we will charge them. (reciprocal tariffs) Secondly..it is to get manufacturing back to America. If American companies decide to build overseas...they pay tariffs. Move back here...no tariffs. So two things happening hereThe tariff wars are dumb, because there’s no point to them. What are we trying to accomplish? If they’re to raise revenue then why are we slapping them on and off every other day? I trust Trump...BUT...if I were in his ear, I would have had him pass the tax cuts in the budget first. I think that would have stabilized the stck market. However when these jobs start coming back, the market will really take off. In fact WHEN they pass the tax cuts, the market will take off.The tariff wars are dumb, because there’s no point to them. lI've always wondered....is it peaceful to have a simple mind?
No confusing factors like shading or nuance.
If someone doesn't worship Trump, they must be a liberal democrat. Boom! Easy peasy.

A nuclear bomb? Cmon man, it’s down 2.25% YTD. Chill out. If you can’t tolerate some degree of volatility then you shouldn’t be in the stock market. I’m sure your local bank has a nice CD for waiting for you.Bro I just wanna see the stock market turn anything but Red, my Retirement account looks like a nuclear bomb hit it, the DOGE is a good thing as long as it benefits you, me, and any other hardworking tax payer
Honestly I really disagree. This time get a 50 foot wall built across the southern border, ALL the way across. He waited too long last time, and got no funding. Trump can keep troops and prevent illegal crossings, but he won't be President forever. Gitter dun NOW! That will save us a trillion dollars in the long run by not subsidizing millions of illegal mongrels that are here to suck off the .Gov tit and be future Dimtard voters. The Hispanics that want to do things right want nothing to do with banana republic politics and will do things right. That's why so many of them that are legal citizens voted for Trump this time. They well understand what they fled.I trust Trump...BUT...if I were in his ear, I would have had him pass the tax cuts in the budget first. I think that would have stabilized the stck market. I think they might have just Lizzie Cheney'd themselves out of DC. 😂I bet clowns like Chip Roy and Massie would find a way to vote against it to do the bidding of their GOPe business masters.
Massie is a snake in the grass, always has been. Note the other thread, there's a growing movement among 'Trump' supporters to attack Trump for calling out Massie.I bet clowns like Chip Roy and Massie would find a way to vote against it to do the bidding of their GOPe business masters.

Yep. I have a few litmus tests:Most of them are DeSimps though. I remember a lot of them when the Trojan horse DeSantis primary run was just being formulated by the GOPe big donors.
So that could mean Texas is also stuck with Eyepatch McCain? Not sure about Massie's district but TX being basically open primary makes it hard to toss out crooks like Chip Roy. Kind of like many GOP clowns in GA.
Yea I’ll definitely take a smart assses advice!! I’ll jump right on that first thing in the morning ChicoA nuclear bomb? Cmon man, it’s down 2.25% YTD. Chill out. Trump governs like he has zero ****s to give.Let’s get realistic here. You actually wanna know Trump’s two dumbest ideas?
1) Mike Pence
2) Jeff Sessions
These reflect the fact that when you first became president, due to lack of experience, he had no idea what he was getting into and how deep the state was. Thankfully, Trump‘s a smart dude, he’s figured it out, and now he’s taking a proverbial wrecking ball to DC. And he cannot do enough wrecking for my taste. We’ve got to get the government to work for us again and not the other way around.
Yep. I have a few litmus tests:
1- What did they say in 2020 when the election was stolen? Did they call it out or stay quiet? Or worse, say it was legit?
2 - What did they say about vaccines in 2020 and 2021?
3 - What did thy say about Jan 6th?
4 - Did they jump over and support DeSantis when he ran?
Very few of the 'MAGA influencers' can pass all 4.
I’m a huge fan of Thomas Massie. We wouldn’t have the debt problems we do in this country if we had 435 Congressmen just like him.Massie is a snake in the grass, always has been. Note the other thread, there's a growing movement among 'Trump' supporters to attack Trump for calling out Massie.

Sorry, I know I’ve been away from this board for a while….. but is “GOPe” the new RINO??We also wouldn't have as many MAGA backstabbers if not for that clown and others. They built their rep so they can claim "purity" when they backstab MAGA for their real GOPe business masters.

Hahaha. That wasn’t really advice sweet pea. It’s down 2.25% YTD. It’s not a nuclear bomb drama queen, it’s normal market activityYea I’ll definitely take a smart assses advice!! I’ll jump right on that first thing in the morning Chico

So it’s thoughtless to let less than 2% of the approximate 3MM federal workers go?My friend, I never said that Biden and his fellow losers accomplished any thing positive I believe politics is dirty business and the way Trump is going about the "great cleansing" is plain thoughtless and dangerous. I do not wish to argue with you, you have all the right to feel the way you do..jim
Anyone else feel like speed has $500 in the market at most?Hahaha. That wasn’t really advice sweet pea. It’s down 2.25% YTD. It’s not a nuclear bomb drama queen, it’s normal market activity
Even if he had $500 in the market on 1/1/25 he would have something like $488.75 today if he is in broad funds. Not exactly an f’n nuclear bomb.Anyone else feel like speed has $500 in the market at most?
