The "Mailman" Takes Over; Dawgs QB Competition On Hold ?

Meanwhile, Georgia needed a quarterback change to rally to beat Arkansas 37-10. The final score doesn't tell the whole story, as Arkansas held a 7-5 halftime lead.

Starting quarterback D'Wan Mathis was benched in the second quarter in favor of Stetson Bennett. LOL

The Bulldogs had 11 first-half penalties, and were just 1-for-12 on third down in the first half.

I said Georgia would struggle on offense, and they are, and the reason would be that they had a brand new QB and a brand new offensive scheme.

But after watching what Miss State did to a hugely better team with a brand new QB and a brand new offensive scheme, I have to conclude that Georgia sucks on offense because Georgia sucks on offense. There is no excuse.

Stetson Bennett wasn't expected to play in the Bulldogs' season and Southeastern Conference opener. The whole week was spent wondering whether Southern California transfer JT Daniels or redshirt freshman D'Wan Mathis would get the call against Arkansas. But when Daniels wasn't cleared because of injury and Mathis' slow start led to the Bulldogs trailing against an opponent that hadn't won an SEC game since October 2017, it was Bennett who had come full circle, back from junior-college football, and rallied Georgia to a 37-10 victory.

Bennett entered in the second quarter and led Georgia to a late first-half field goal and then marched the Bulldogs on three straight second-half possessions that ended in touchdowns, breaking open the game and leading to an unlikely hero in a game that looked devastating for a half with the No. 4 team in the country trailing 7-5 at halftime.

Now Georgia coach Kirby Smart has to make another decision after Bennett went 20 for 29 for 211 yards and two touchdowns.

40 years is long enough to own three or four dogs!
40 years is 1/4 of the time since the Civil War!
40 years is long enough that I now really like Herschel Walker!
40 years is not long enough to erase my memory of the stench coming from the red side of the field in Jacksonville!

40 years is about half the time that Kirby Smart is going to need to bring Georgia a national championship at the rate he is going. If he doesn't actually get major traction and play in the final college football playoff game this year, the recruits might finally wise up and realize he's had 4 years and hasn't gotten any closer in all that time.

Once the incoming talent tapers off from the peak they've had these past 3 years, he will lose any and all hope of ever winning a championship as his only claim to fame so far is out talenting the opposing team.

OTOH, if he does get them to the CFP, without having an offense worth a nickel, I will have to accept the contention of the fleas on this board that he actually is a good coach. This is not something I wish to do.

Edit: There is already one perception I have to change. I have been calling Georgia's last 4 games a cakewalk. Well, Mississippi State is one of those 4 teams. It's too early to gauge relative strength, but if MSU keeps playing like this, they may be the second best team in the West. Maybe the best.

If Nix plays a decent game UGA loses, I wasn't overly impressed with two things in the UGA game outside of the QB play.

1. For the better part of 3 quarters they couldn't run the ball, OL did not look as impressive as many thought, that could change with time.

2. Defense looked pedestrian in first half against a very poor, pitiful offense.

You’re right. They are lucky they had arky last week or they would very possibly have lost. I think auburn would have beat the brakes off them if they played last week. I would expect their qb play will get better with Daniels, although again he’s fairly new to their system and he’s coming off an injury. Their defense looked pretty mediocre the first half, and I didn’t watch much of the second, but from what I saw arky realized who they were and started playing like it. As has been noted, defenses so far haven’t looked very good in general, and they have too much talent not to improve on that side of the ball, so I’d guess it was an outlier and they’ll be better going forward.

I also think Arky has few really SEC-level players, and when those guys got tired Georgia jumped on them. But Auburn, they have LOTS of SEC level players. So we will see.

Absolutely right. I think you could expect there to be some rust from Daniels as well, even if he is an improvement. Auburn looked pretty solid from what I saw, and I think that’s a pretty decent Kentucky team they beat. I think uga got really lucky their first game was arky. If they’d had a more stout opponent they would have been in trouble.

Nix better than Franks

chinchey1,

Didn't see the game or find a rushing breakdown by quarters, but for the whole game -
Dawgs - 40 carries; 135 yds; 3.375 per carry. Way off last year's pace.

2019 - Dawgs rushed for 2,591 yds - 185.1/game - 4.9 / carry

2019 - Arkansas 14th (last) - SEC Rushing defense - gave up 222 yds/game

I doubt it will be "much better". Last year Georgia protected the defense by running a conservative offense and playing field position. Other than the So Car game, Fromm was very good at protecting the ball, and that Oline was able to generate enough push to have a decent running game even though they had little threat in the passing game.

It will not be that way this year.

Georgia has to rebuild the offensive line, so the running game will almost certainly be less effective. The offense isn't fully installed, so the passing game will be rudimentary, and JV Daniels has had all of 3 weeks to get the timing down with the WR's. Just as an FYI, getting the timing down can take a year or more, and that's with guys who know the offense.

No, there will be more mistakes this year, and Georgia will counter that by becoming even more bland than they were last year. But 3 runs and punt won't get you very far. Expect the defense to be seeing a lot more short fields to defend, and a lot less time on the bench to rest.

Besides, did you see what LSU did to that vaunted defense? Cat's out of the bag now. They got exposed, and teams have had all offseason to review tape.

Expect Georgia's defense to have far less gaudy stats then they had last year.
It is hard to believe but after two games one thing is certain....speed kills and Kirby's "D" opposes plenty of it. Nix is a gifted scrambler and was able to avoid multiple sacks and TFL. You can see how teams with less mobile QBs will surely struggle against Kirby's defense more especially teams that are having difficulty rushing the football.
It was clear vs Auburn tonight Ga's Oline is starting to find itself both in the running game and in pass pro. Stetson's quick feet allow him the ability to extend plays when needed.....something Fromm could not do. Tonight we all got a small dose of what Monken's offense can generate and it appears SBIV can be successful running it. Monken obviously flipped the page in his playbook in week #2 and the results can't be denied.....+ 200 yards passing/rushing against a decent Auburn team.
I think your timing theory took a hit tonight as well. Bennett/Jackson and the entire offense looked like they possessed plenty of it to me. If we have learned anything after tonight it's that Monken and Ga's offense will not be branded "bland" in 2020.
The only thing exposed so far is that Monken's offense has tons of potential, Kirby's defense is championship caliber, and that Scott Cochran's special teams are excelling at a very high rate. That my friend is a recipe for success.

Are these stats less gaudy? Certainly Gus reviewed the tape.....don't you think?

2019- Auburn total yards= 329
2020- Auburn = 216

Georgia manhandled Auburn. Their defensive front 7 are brutes and fast and their offensive line is very good. They are going to give us trouble. We have a lot of skilled offensive players, but the O-line will have to play exceptionally well if we are to have a running game and adequately protect Trask. And the defense has to improve dramatically or they will just run the ball down our throats and control the clock. Glad we have several weeks to get better. Georgia impresses met, though.

I do not like this, but unless Auburn is really bad, then Georgia is really good. NC level good. In 3 hours (actually about 45 minutes) I went from supremely confident to highly uncertain about the outcome of our game. And unless our defense finds something, we are going to lose to you again. My main hope is that you played lights out in a home night game against a team you had all offseason to prepare for (and ignored Arkansas, which would also explain that poor showing) and you won't look this good again. I suppose we will see against Tennessee.

LG89,

Went through the same mental process; but I didn't have the nerve to say it so plainly on this board !

I share your reservations about our defense; when Muschamp & USC-least roll up big passing yards, you don't deserve to be called DBU.

Realize that all three units on the D have to work together, but our tackling & our pass coverage on slot receivers sucks.
