“The Augusta Sports Council and the Ray Guy Award announced Ray’s 8 for week 8 games, as Florida’s Tommy Townsend was recognized among eight punters selected for the weekly honor after the Gators’ 38-27 win over South Carolina.
“Townsend was one of three SEC punters to be selected among this week’s punters of the week (Joseph Charlton, South Carolina and Braden Mann, Texas A&M).
“Townsend was effective in the punting game for Florida on Saturday, as the Orlando, Fla. native recorded seven punts for a total of 313 yards, averaging 44.7 yards per punt, including his second longest punt of the season for 55 yards. Townsend managed to place three of his punts inside the opposing 20-yard line, while booting two for over 50 yards, forcing five fair catches on the day for the Gamecocks.
“Saturday’s game marked his third game this season in which he’s placed three punts inside the 20-yard line and his second game tallying at least two punts for 50-plus yards.

“The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thompson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame Inductee, Ray Guy.
“Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis on net punting average.
“The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team’s success.”
