The Washington State coach has interviewed for the vacant coaching position at Mississippi State, according to a report from radio host Paul Finebaum Tuesday afternoon.

ESPN Mississippi radio host Bo Bounds of the “Out of Bounds” radio show told the popular SEC reporter on the “Paul Finebaum Show” that Mississippi State athletic director John Cohen traveled to Key West, Florida, to interview Leach for the job.

Bounds: “That would be, in my opinion, his home run hire. If I’m John Cohen, I would go all-in on Mike Leach. If they got him, you know Paul, because of SEC money, they could offer Mike Leach over $5 million and make him tell you no. Because he is one heck of a football coach, who has proven he can win at Texas Tech and Washington State, when the majority of the time, he’s outmanned on the football field. Which is what happens at Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Arkansas and other programs in the SEC. So yes, I do believe he’s talked to Leach and I think it would be a home run hire if John was willing to do that.”

All SEC schools have large amounts of TV money, with ESPN / ABC taking the TV contract, TV money will increase. Why would they hire a Coordinator instead of a proven HC ?

If you want to make your mark as a Head Coach & are not interested in the NFL, the SEC is the big challenge.

The money an SEC school can pay you is comparable to the NFL.

TV contract getting bigger when ESPN / ABC takes over.

As Mullen has pointed out, more control over program while still allowing you some time for Head Coach to enjoy life & his family.

Frankly, I think Le Pirate isn’t that frigging stupid to come to the SEC for his Air Raid system to get anally raped. I think he got himself a nice, short prepaid vacay to the Keys to act interested, and then bid Cohen a fond fare thee well before heading to the shrimp docks for a margarita at Half Shell

Actually his Air Raid has roots in The SEC. The reason Stoops hired him when he started at Oklahoma, was because he felt Leach’s Air Raid Offense at Kentucky was the hardest Offense he had to prepare for while he was our DC.

I mean....he was going to take the Tennessee job before Fulmer sabatoged everything.

And he might be able to hold WSU hostage for a raise.

Irish Poker Dog & UK Alum,

As I posted on another board !

Yap, Yap, Yap

No one picked up his tab; Mike Leach owns a house in Key West.

From the Washington Post June 1, 2011

"...They’d (Leach & his wife) bought a vacation home in Key West five months earlier and decided it was time for a vacation."

Leach was the OC at UK when Mumme was HC. The first season and a half was fun, until SEC defenses started figuring out how to stop it.

Like his mentor, Leach has never put much of a premium on defense. Me? I’d rather win 20-16 than lose 37-35.
But would you rather lose 9-6 or lose 37-35?

You get a guy like Muschamp you will win about 7 game along the 20-16 area. You will lose around 5 games 9-6. Leach you will lose about 4 games along the lines of 37-35 and win games along the lines of 56-49.

One will hold a presser about pirates. The other will talk about the midline.

Wash St is a better gig than MIss St.

In every way possible, except that it's not in the SEC. But if you like a cushy gig, then you don't want to be in the SEC anyway.

Country & Lizard,

Don't know Leach, but if he wants to compete in the top ranks of college football, & show that his "Air Raid" offense will work anywhere he need to be in the SEC !

There is also this small thing called money !

According to SI - "...The university (Wash State) said he will continue to make $4 million each year over the next five seasons and will receive a one-time retention bonus of $750,000 following the 2020 season."

Bo Bounds, ESPN Mississippi radio host, told Finebaum that Miss State AD had the authority to offer Mike Leach $5mm / year. Plus cars ,plus housing, etc.

How Bounds would know this is beyond me; perhaps just a trial balloon to see how Miss State fans react.

He's been in the sec before. Miss St is a very difficult place to win. Leach has better chance of reaching big bowl games staying at Wash St.

If I was a good head coach I would never go to the NFL....college pays as good and better pending the program, but in college you can run things if you're good.

Leach and Kiffin would wreak havoc in the West by each winning a game or two they shouldn’t each year...

Sensing that the East could actually wrestle this bitch back in the foreseeable future...
Gonna be hard to win at MS State...place is a sh*t hole...money is going to be an issue, facilities are an issue, playing some of the best teams in the country every year will be a challenge.

I don't disagree one bit. However flip the script and live in the northwest and the same is said about Wazzu. Granted the competition is less but it is a st!÷hole in itself. The only history they really have winning is the former coach who likes strippers and the college QB who turned into a pill head as an adult and is known as one of the biggest bust in the NFL draft.

After Price their best record tenure is under Leach who is sporting a .545 winning % and a 1-2 bowl record.

Yes Starkvegas is a hole in the middle of nowhere. Pullman is the same. I guess the difference is a one is a hole with heat and humidity. The other is a hole with cold weather. Depends on which one prefers.

Yes Mark Price did win the two conference titles when USC was down, as was Washington, and Oregon had yet to build what they now have. Granted MSU only has their lone West title at 8-5 while Sherrill was cheating and our very Dan Mullen had that rare run for a few years.

I can't defend MSU or Starkville at all. However we are talking Pullman and Wazzu...not Seattle and U Dub.
