Napier Coaching Staff

I’m not really too concerned who the off the field analysts are. I trust him to get the right people together to implement what he wants to do. He’s building his Army. I assume he’s going to get the people that have already done it with him and know the expectations.

My favorite thing about his “army” is he has a high school crew and a portal crew. The portal game is going to become increasingly important and he is on top of it. Up here in MI, Tucker neutralizes Hairballs edge by being the portal master. Soon it will take both to stay on top. Billy is ahead of the game. Up here we see old school Hairball (though they did well this year) losing ground with their 1980s thinking.

The key with building a new team is you have to start with people you trust in key positions. Not ALL the key positions, but enough so that you have some known commodities mixing with the new people and building the culture the way you want it. Too few and the culture could get away from you, too many and you could end up with sycophants. Neither works. Gotta find that sweet spot in between. Then once your first crew of new people get meshed in, you can start sliding some of those you brought with you out so you can start bringing in the heavy hitters. Napier seems to have a good handle on the process.

Just say you could end up with ass kissers.

Joe Danos to the Gators staff Saturday.

Danos is Director of Player Athletic Development

In this role, Danos will assist Director of Strength and Conditioning Mark Hocke in the weight room.

Danos served as the head strength and conditioning coach for MLS team Inter Miami Futbol Club in 2020 and 2021.

Prior to that, he worked for the New York Giants as a strength and conditioning assistant coach and a performance manager from 2013-19.

He was an assistant strength and conditioning coach for Jimbo Fisher at Florida State from 2010-12

Does anyone have a clear understanding of what Director of Player Athletic Development means ?

It’s another new position at UF that we haven’t had before. Another person for the “Army”

Paco,

Not like you to be so ambiguous !

Meaning no one currently on this board know what the difference between an assistant strength & conditioning coach and the Director of Player Athletic Development is.

Should we assume the Director is paid more than an assistant ? LOL

Guess Joe Danos will have to show the players the difference & then they will tell us.

We’ve never had some of these positions that we now have that Napier is brining in.

Further Speculation on Tosh Lupoi to the Gators -

"...For about as long as the Billy Napier hire has been official at Florida, there have been rumors that the new coach has been targeting Jacksonville Jaguars defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi for his UF staff. The defensive line spot remains unfilled, and Lupoi, who has spent the last three seasons in the NFL but is known as a tremendous recruiter, could be an ideal hire for that opening."

"...Some chatter out there that Jacksonville Jaguars DL coach Tosh Lupoi might be joining Billy Napier's staff at Florida.

I’m told that’s not going to happen, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see Lupoi back somewhere in college football.

Chris Low, ESPN, Dec 16, 2021"

"...With Meyer’s firing, whoever the new hire is will likely choose to clean house when it comes to staff, meaning the timing for Lupoi to make a jump back to the college ranks would make a lot of sense. However, it sounds like if that happens, it won’t be to Florida."

Tyler Nettuno, Dec 18, 2021

While not likely, the only possible carryover I see from Mullen's staff are -
Defensive Line CoachDavid Turner
Linebackers CoachChristian Robinson

Both of them decent recruiters as well as position coaches.

This is the up-to-date, complete list of Napier hires from 247Sports
Ocala,

Read that article before I posted; no mention of LB or DT coaches.

Jag's last NFL game is Jan 9th. but with Urban's firing, nothing to stop Lupoi from jumping ship now except for how it might affect him if he ever decided to return to NFL.

EDIT
Rereading the article, you could make a case for Chaney as the LB Coach -
Jamar Chaney - Defensive Analyst, ILB/OLB

Gotta think he's waiting to hire coaches who are still working for a reason. I did read an article that said under historical NFL rules, colleges couldn't interview NFL coaches until after the season ended, just like other NFL teams. But this year a new rule is being tried that allows NFL teams to begin the interview process 2 weeks before the season ends - 12/28 this year. The article said it's not known whether or not that rule applies to colleges who want to interview NFL coaches. It sure will help with recruiting for NSD if we can get our on--the-field coaching staff in place ASAP.

If it ain’t Tosh, TOS will be in full melt down🤣

Everything im hearing is that Tosh won't be taking the job.

now I don't know if that's because he wants to wait and explore other NFL options or what, but that's what I keep seeing reported.

All I know about him is that he's a good recruiter and at least a decent coach. Im not sure if it's the end of the world if we don't get him. Im pretty thrilled with the staff we have so far.

move heard the rumor about taking UGAs Co-DC since he's likely going to be out of a job or demoted with Muschamp probably taking the DC job.

Georgia' defense is pretty good, wouldn't mind playing more like them and less like, well, us.

I personally have no obsession with Tosh, but remember a lot of the guys on these pay sites get overly obsessed with “recruiters”

And not surprised on Kirby choosing Champ over Shcumann because it sounds like if Champ didn’t get that he was headed to da U to be DC for Mario

Nothing but rumor and speculation but some of this would make a lot of sense:

First, sounds like for whatever reeason Toah may be headed to Oregon?

i am guessing Rob Sale as co-OL/OC

Then I would guess Glenn Schumann as co-DC

This matches more experienced guys with the young guys he brought along

Both also seem to match what it is BN wants to do

Patrick Toney stayed up to 1am-2am playing video games with Shemar James the night before ESD. Recruiters recruit. Would Grantham ever do a thing like that?

I read that. My guess is he will have a co-DC until he gets a little SEC experience then he will be the guy.

No, but McElwain might have…if it was the right video game…

Sounds like:

Rob Sale as other OL (prob partly OC)

Michigan State’s RB coach for TE

Karl Scott - Vikings DB coach

Eric Henderson - Rams DL coach

Mike Rumph - Bears DL coach

Obviously one of the DL coaches will coach a different position

Bama and UGA have huge staffs...they have guys on top of guys getting sh*t done. I loved the news that we are staffing up and throwing big money at recruiting and coaches. No different than facilities...these things matter and other programs are going it for a reason.

Agree Danny

The two criticisms I see are Henderson, but like someone said, why would you NOT want the guy who has coached the Rams DL for three years?

And the Mich St RB coach going to TE. Common sense says he is 39 years old and likely a monster recruiter.

Billy has worked wirh most, if not all, at some point so he knows what he is getting

All seems like solid coaches and I am guessing the Mich St coach is a recruiter, as most TE coaches are

Now just need an ST coach

Thats funny because when I saw the Ram's DL coach the first thing that came to my mind was "well...yeah....when you have Aaron Donald...."

That would be an elite staff if that what it turns out to be, especially on defense. Henderson would be a big time addition as would Karl Scott and Rob Sale. I have my doubts on how realistic getting Karl Scott and Henderson would be. Mike Rumph and the Mich St guy are just “meh”.

Any idea on the draw to the Mich St guy other than crossing paths with Billy somewhere? The fact he is moved from RB to TE, made me think maybe recruiter?

If that is the group, I think the staff as a whole is solid. A few things I would have liked to see different, but in the end solid.

He’s a recruiter. That staff would be elite if it came to pass, especially on defense. You would be hard pressed to find a better defensive college staff in the country. I mean Corey Raymond, Patrick Toney, Karl Scott, Erick Henderson and Mike Rumph would be a ridiculous defensive staff. The one concern would be is that too many cooks in the kitchen.

A unique dynamic for sure. Especially with the less experienced guy Toney being DC.

The more I read and hear about this Toney guy the more I like him. Maybe because of having Grantham for so long that anything is better then that dude.

I am liking Toney more and more too, but those are some big hitters to put under a big guy.

Although it sounds like the new guys are mostly getting big money, and Toney did as well

My only concern like I have said in the past is too many chiefs and not enough Indians but on paper it would be an elite defensive staff.

The MSU guy is basically another ULL buddy. But two years under Tucker.

He’s a recruiter and talent evaluator. Another young guy. I don’t know much about him. Michigan St fans don’t seem to be happy about losing him.

They aren’t. Just got a text from my buddy that is a State die-hard.
