In the last 15 years, no defending national champion has lost as many starters as LSU - 17, and the
two closest teams (14 starters lost) failed to win double-digit games, so why the expectation that LSU will simply reload without Heisman winner
Joe Burrow at quarterback, a stable of receivers and six NFL players from the defense?
Oh, and not to mention the departures of the architect of the offense (
Joe Brady) and defensive coordinator
Dave Aranda?
The Tigers went 15-0.
Ed Orgeron and Co. captured a National Championship on top of an SEC Championship. The Tigers took home the Heisman Trophy, the Biletnikoff Award, the Thorpe Award, multiple Coach of the Year honors and plenty more.
When the NFL Draft rolled around, LSU set an SEC record and tied the NCAA record with
14 total players drafted, including
five first-round picks. 48 hours after the draft ended,
20 total Tigers had agreed to NFL contracts.
But Wait; There's More -
The bleeding has not stopped there for the defending National Champions.
On Monday, LSU wide receiver
Ja'Marr Chase announced that he was opting out of the 2020 season and would begin to prepare for the NFL Draft.
Hours later, reports surfaced that LSU defensive tackle
Tyler Shelvin has also opted out of the 2020 season. Sources tell the Geaux247 staff that he will begin to prepare for the NFL Draft, as well.
The news came on the same day that LSU defensive end
T.K. McLendon entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. Ahead of fall camp, senior defensive end
Neil Farrell announced that he was opting out of the 2020 season, but did plan to return in 2021. That wasn't the case for senior defensive back
Kary Vincent Jr., who opted out of the season and will prepare for the draft instead of a return to college.
Between four players opting out of the 2020 season, players dismissed from the program and transfers, 14 additional players have left the roster this off-season.
LSU entered fall camp earlier this month with 31 players gone from the 2019 roster. Now, that number is up to 34.
The Tigers returned 49 scholarship players from the 2019 team, which includes players put onto a scholarship after joining the team, like punter Zach Von Rosenberg and kickoff specialist
Avery Atkins.
Orgeron and the staff signed a top five class in February, later adding two graduate transfers to bring the incoming number of players to 24. The Tigers have one scholarship spot left from the 2020 class that could be carried over into the 2021 class, or used on another transfer ahead of the fall season.
With just 70 total players on scholarship, the Tigers are well under the 85-man scholarship limit, meaning a handful of walk-ons are likely to earn scholarships for the 2020 season.
Bottom line: How LSU is ranked in the top 5 on some voters' ballots is beyond me.

With LSU barely having enough players to field a team & losing so much talent - players & coordinators, IMO, Gators will get the win in The Swamp.
Leaves TAMU in College Station & Dawgs in Jacksonville as our toughest tests.
