He's a true freshman and the future, so I agree he should start. But everyone needs to remember that when we are getting our asses handed to us it's not DJ's fault, just like it's not Mertz's fault. Napier blows chunks big time. 45 against a team that would struggle against a good high school team.

Mertz is very limited. No reason to start him over Lagway now. A couple of starts and Lagway probably plays better and no more joke 5 yard box checkdown offense.
Lol.. I said the same last year when Mertz played for his passing % apparently with those joke 3rd down passes which had no chance to move the chains.
A&M won't be easy as their defense is pretty good but Lagway needs games to get where he needs to be.

I blame Napier for most of it but I am curious to see if the playing in a 5 yard box most of the time diminishes quite a bit with someone who is decent throwing it down the field some.

When he only has 2.6 seconds to throw, the downfield pass game will disappear too. Samford playing with D lineman that will be working at the local Birmingham car dealership once their college days are over. We need some imagination in the offense to help overcome the poor Oline play.
Facts. But hopefully DJ got comfortable with the stage before the beatings begin. Winning in the Swamp for the first time is like seeing your first rack, once you do it once you want to do it again as many times as possible.

Not sure who you are arguing with? Currently we are stuck with BN. What are the options? Keep playing Mertz (who is a great kid) and have little hope of even a few wins? We know what the answer is but I doubt the AD is going to cut Napier loose this soon.

Mertz might actually be the one how could lead to more wins than Lagway given his stability and experience.
Plus we’re only winning a “few” games this year with either of them.
We’ll see, it’s going to be what it will be, but sadgator’s willing to bet that Lagway won’t look “quite” as good against the real teams on Florida’s schedule.

I don't think so. We've gotten worse than last year. Mertz doesn't have the wheels to escape the jail breaks that are coming big time on every 3rd and medium. Mertz doesn't stretch the defenses like Lagway will because no one respects our downfield passing game. Miami was playing 8 in the box nearly every damn down, and when they didn't, they got pressure with only 4 linemen rushing.
We don't have a QB problem, in fact that's about all we've got going for us. Everyone knows what the problem is without saying it.
I want to look at the replay but I was shocked on a couple of the long throws as we actually had 2 WRs on the same plays running routes that took them more than 10 yards pass the line of scrimmage. Haven't seen that a whole lot lately.

Mertz had some great runs last year, including the one against Mizzou that got him hurt and ended our upset bid and also any chance to beat the nolies.
When you have time to throw it amazing what opens up in the passing game. Doering said it best last night, first time in several games that he's seen a clean pocket at UF.
You can actually hit receivers in stride when you send them down the field also.

I have a good feeling about the Texas a@m game coming up considering Lagway is the starting qb. I’m sure he’s played against some of the defenders on that team that he scorched during his high school years in Texas and will go in feeling comfortable about doing it at the college level. I’m totally void of any sunshine pumping and realize UF is at the precipice of making the news of the birth of a star or the firing of another’s coach.. Go Gators
