Jesuits are generally really good priests; fine people. They don’t all see eye to eye with Francis.

Interestingly, I looked up the last time a Pope spoke or taught ex cathedra and it was in November of 1950 by Pius XII, so it's not a very common occurrence.

No idea, but worth watching. One thing I think is interesting that the Pope wanted to take a meeting with Vance right before he died. Would also be interested if he met with any other world leaders over the weekend. It suggests to me that he felt it was important to meet with the people he did right before he died.

And further to your point, I don't think the public has any sway or influence with who become a Cardinal either. It's not like there's a voting public that determines who is in leadership in the Catholic Church. There is also no accountability with that system either, for what that's worth.

It follows a tradition of almost 2,000 years but it has evolved over the centuries.
