Equating the end of slavery, which was absolutely required, to reparations payments is beyond absurd. Ditto on the vote but even that, as big as it was, pales in comparison to ending the ownership of people.
Imagine for moment if you found out that 13 generations ago your ancestors participated in the slave trade. Now imagine someone compelling you to pay for those sins. That's not reasonable man. I'd fight with you to prevent that from happening to you.
No, I'm telling you that being afraid of divisive conversations, isn't a reason to not have them.

What's the upside of each particular instance of divisiveness? Freeing humans? Worth it. Allowing woman to vote? Worth it.
Making people who were born one color pay a tax to people who were born another color based on mistakes that were made generations ago....that we cannot possibly afford...not worth it. And of course there's the downside of the devisive nature of the undoable act being discussed.

FWIW I disagreed with the payments to Japanese Americans as well. Were they treated harshly, unfairly and unconstitutionally? Absolutely...in a time of peril in a world war. There were in fact Japanese saboteurs in our midst and they even helped in planning the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Viewed though the lense of history, where we KNOW we were going to win the wars (yes...two of them simultaneously), it's easy to say that we reacted poorly. Viewed through the reality of January 1942, their actions seem more reasonable if not unfortunate...but yes, absolutely unconstitutional.
