Gators to Hire Ron Roberts as LB Coach, Co-Defensive Coordinator ?

Florida Hiring Billy Gonzales as WR Coach

Florida fills its final on-field assistant vacancy with a familiar face: Billy Gonzales is returning to coach the Gators' wide receivers.

Billy Gonzales is returning to Florida for a third stint as the Gators' wide receivers coach, All Gators can confirm.

In all, Gonzales has coached at UF for nine years total, starting out as the team's WR coach in 2005 under Urban Meyer while Mullen was the program's offensive coordinator. He remained with the program from then until 2009 before manning short-term gigs at LSU (2010-11) and Illinois (2012).

Gators join the race for Top247 WR Jeremiah McClellan

Don't know if this is because of Billy Gonzales or what; kid supposedly has 41 offers so we are a "little late" to his party.

Doubt we get much traction here, but like my 1st post in this thread (some QB named Manning who ended up at Tex ASS) at least we are giving it a try.

As Billy G gets moved in & set up, we will see his recruiting results.

DT Shone Washington (6-4, 270) is no longer with the UGA football program.

A three-star member in the class of 2022 out of New Orleans, Louisiana, Washington played in one game during his freshman year at Georgia. He recorded one tackle vs. Samford.

Washington committed to Georgia in late 2021, choosing the Bulldogs over the Florida Gators.

Don't know how much interest Gators will have; really no better (in terms of game experience) than the incoming Fr (who were smart enough to pick UF from the start) we already have.

Damn. Napier can't catch a break. Heard that dude was rly good and probably the best o lineman for UF. 2 transferred to USC correct?

He was supposed to be a really good run blocker. This hurts. Not sure if Nebraska or someone else lured him away with another offer or what is going on here. Not even sure the rules now if someone does this.

We miss a bowl game in this prediction. Almost zero chance FSU and LSU make the playoff like shown here with them playing each other.

Fever,
Hope you are right !

Having FSU make the 4 team CFP before we do would be miserable.

When CFP expands to 12 it will be so diluted that no longer as big a deal.

EDIT
Don't know about you, but I am not expecting a great W-L record this year. Young players (especially on Defense) will not have that much of an impact; transfers - who knows; depends if they stick around.
QB & OL the key. As you have previously stated. if Mertz doesn't win QB1 - NOW, we are in trouble.

Not to mention a brutal schedule with some tough road games.

If we somehow went 5-7 missing a bowl game and losing to Vandy again we definitely dont have the right coach here.

FSU will probably have a chance to be in the playoff discussion if they beat LSU.

Fever,

Only problem with that thought is we have had four (4) Head Coaches (& 3 interim Coaches) since Urban Meyer left 11 years ago. Plus his buyout would be painful.
IMO, firing him after 2 years would just cause more problems
Every time you fire your head coach, you exacerbate your problems & you never know if the replacement will be any better.

Everyone talked about CBN making a quick turnaround - hopefully, after witnessing Mullen's inability to recruit, none of us actually believed that.

When you look at Kentucky & Mark Stoops, you see the advantage of sticking with a coach long enough to accurately judge him.
We need to give CBN at least four (4) years.

If we fired CBN after two (2) years, our track record would be so bad that no quality coach would take the job without a "100% guaranteed" contract.

I feel like you guys are going to have to do what we did. Make it through the bad to finally see the good. Going through coaching changes in todays early signing era is brutal when your rivals are better (uga) similar to us with clemson. Norvell wasn't looking too hot at 3 and 6 and 5 and 7. The 2 remaining questions on him is high school recruiting and hiring the best assistants. Not sure our defensive staff is good enough to make the playoff. With no injuries, we might have an outside shot but the defense is concerning. I have a ton of faith in our offense next yr.

No coach I can think of in the modern era has ever got to SEC championship level or national championship contending level by not having at least a pretty good year in there by their 3rd full year. My guess is Stoops good years will be 8-4 at most now (with the coming 9 SEC games rotating format) instead of a 9-3 regular season where he avoided a lot of the SEC powerhouses. I think Stoops has never went better than 5-3 in SEC play. I am a little nervous Napier might get much of the team corrected by year 3 but still have poor QB play.

I do tend to give coaches time and try to collect enough data points before forming opinions. This next year will tell me a lot.

The thing that I've been grappling with is all the changes in college football over the last few years. Yes, you have to give some leeway since it's new - BUT - if a coach can't roll with the changes in NIL, free agency and still recruit in the Top 5 (nationally) in the SEC, etc...they aren't going to make it at UF.

This year coming isn't a make/break it IMO but it'll set up whether the next year is. I think we'll have enough data by year-end to really form solid opinions.

Fever,

You could be right; we don't know how good or bad Lagway will be or even if he will actually make it to UF.

Most top rated QBs smart enough to look at & evaluate all aspects of the teams recruiting them.

If CBN solves all, or even most of, our current problems, just remember how many games UGA & Bama have won with a game manager who doesn't turn the ball over at QB - Stetson Bennett's 1st year comes to mind.

Great defense, strong running game, good special teams, & just a mediocre passing game will win a lot more games than we're winning now & make us a more attractive team to play for.

If CBN's recruiting solves all of the other problems & they stay solved, we will get a great QB - I think we already have one - Lagway

With Lagway coming in shortly, I don't think so, but even If "the great QB" is the last piece of the puzzle - so be it.

I'm feeling that Lagway is a serious wild card. Frosh QBs can come in today and win the Heisman if the team around them is built for it.

So even if this year is another solid recruiting class...but you get Lagway. That's all it may take to push us over the top in year 3. That's certainly a small window of opportunity but it's a legit, reasonable thought.

GBO,

Don't see Lagway winning Heisman as True FR because I don't think CBN will have all the necessary pieces in place.

Will we be getting better - yes - but we play in the SEC & all the upper tier teams will also be getting better.

Don't think Lagway is quite the athlete that AR is - I doubt he runs a 4.43 - 40 yd dash or can throw a football 70 yards -
BUT
I don't care !
He is athletic enough to have good "escapeability" & runs well enough to pick up a few yards on a busted play instead of taking a sack. Also his passing completion % is higher than AR's was in HS.

HS not the same as college competition, but his HS skill set will improve as he ages.

"...Lagway threw for 2,081 yards and 24 scores in 2022. He also completed 67% of his passes, which was up from 55% in his sophomore season."
