Gators Set to Take on Fifth-Seeded Virginia in Second Round

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -
For the 13th straight season, the Florida lacrosse team will be playing in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. They will take on the fifth-seeded Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Corey Spector on the call.

This will be the Gators first career meeting against the Cavaliers. Florida owns a career record of 11-23 against the ACC conference, including a 1-1 record this season.

UF (18-2, 6-0 AAC) is coming off a first-round victory over North Carolina by a score of 17-8 on Friday night. It was the Gators largest margin of victory of all-time over the Tar Heels, and Coach Amanda O'Leary's 400th career win. The Gators had three players record hat-tricks, as Maggi Hall, Emily Heller and Josie Hahn all scored three each. Ashley Gonzalez led the team with five points, on one goal and four assists. Florida never trailed, and led by as many as 10 goals.

Outlook on the Cavaliers
Virginia (15-4, 6-0 ACC) is coming off a 21-6 victory over LIU on Friday afternoon. The Cavaliers are in their 28th consecutive NCAA Tournament and their 36th overall.

The Cavaliers are led offensively by Morgan Schwab, who leads the team in points with 78 (19 goals, 58 assists). Katia Carnevale (51) and Mackenzie Hoeg (47) lead the squad in goals, combining for 98 of the teams 266 goals (.368 percent). Kate Galacia leads the team with 93 draw controls.

Sonia LaMonica is in her first season in Charlottesville and her 16th season overall as a head coach. She owns a career record of 162-105, as she coached at Mount St. Mary's for one year, then coached at Towson four 14 seasons.

Historic Gators
This 2024 Florida Gators team is on a current 18 game winning streak, good for the longest streak in program history. During this streak, the Gators have outscored opponents 346-126 good for a win margin of 12.22 goals per game.

UF's totals of 366 goals, 185 assists, and 367 draw controls are all program records for the most in a season. 18 total wins is currently tied for the second most wins in a Florida lacrosse season, with 19 being the record that they set in 2012.

High Powered Offense
The Gators lead the nation in scoring offense, (18.30 goals per game) and points per game (27.55 points per game), leading the second-place school by over two in each category. Hall leads the team in goals (50) and assists (52), becoming just the second player in program history to cross the century mark. Danielle Pavinelli ranks second on the team in both goals (48) and assists (36).
