2024 Gator baseball

Something seems different with our hitting approach, or maybe I should say approach at bat because hits have been hard to come by.

I agree the bottom third of our lineup just isn’t very good. Shelnut and Cags have been our only consistent hitters. Shelton has been very good overall but disappears too often. Kurland has been ok, but seems like he’s the same guy at bat as last year.

Big disappointment so far has been Heyman. I thought he might be our best hitter, but he’s been bad.

Agree that we strike out way too much and some games our bats just disappear. The bottom third of our batting order is extremely weak. But on the pitching, not quite accurate. Except for last Saturday against LSU, the freshmen relievers have, for the most part, not been good midweek or weekends. Slater has been a little more inconsistent than the last 2 years, but has had really good outings both midweek and weekends.
McNeillie - ERA 10.29. Good weekend outing vs. Columbia, horrible midweek outing vs. Stetson, followed by bad weekend outing vs. Miami. Really bad midweek vs. UCF, then bad weekend outing vs. St. Marys. 1 inning vs. Texas A&M was good. Decent midweek outing vs. Jacksonville, 2.1 innings, 0 hits, 1 walk, 1 hbp, followed by an OK weekend outing vs LSU, 2.1 inning, 2 hits and 3 walks, but no runs.
Philpott - ERA 5.91 - OK weekend outing vs. St. Johns, 1.1 innings, no hits, 2 walks. Very good midweek outing vs. UNF, 3 innings, 2 hits, 2 walks, 0 runs. Good weekend outing vs. Columbia, 3 innings 2 hits, 1 walk no runs. Very good midweek outing vs. Bethune-Cookman. Bad midweek outing vs. UCF. Bad weekend vs. St. Marys in 2 appearances. Got nobody out, faced 1 batter and gave up a hit, then in his 2nd appearance he pitched 1.1 innings and have up a HR. Was bad in midweek game vs. FSU, then had a bad weekend outing against Texas A&M - Got nobody out, walking the only 2 batters he faced. Bad midweek game vs. Jacksonville, did not pitch vs. LSU and then had a bad midweek outing vs. FSU last night.
Slater - ERA 3.51. He's been in 14 games, 7 midweek and 7 weekends. He's only had 3 bad outings, really. 2 against FSU and 1 against Miami.
Jameson - ERA 4.19 - He's been in 12 games, 6 midweek and 6 weekend. His worst outings have been in weekend games against St. Johns & Columbia and 2 midweek games against FSU. Other games he's been OK to pretty good.
Purnell - ERA 6.75 - He has 11 appearance, but has only pitched 8 innings total, 4 in weekend games, 7 midweek games. He's had 2 good weekend appearances and 2 bad ones. In midweek appearances, he's had 5 decent outings and 2 really bad ones.
Satin - ERA 1.08 - He's been in 8 games, but only thrown 8.1 innings. His problem is walks, as he's given up 10, but only 1 earned run. He's pitched in 3 weekend games and 1 midweek game and his only run was against UCF, but he's been OK whenever he's been put in.

The one reliever who definitely has been more effective on the weekends than midweek is Grayson Smith. ERA 7.30. He's been in 5 weekend games and 5 midweek games. He's not had a bad weekend outing yet, although he's only thrown 12.1 innings total, but his only bad outings have come against UCF, Jacksonville and FSU twice.

Overall, our more experienced relievers (Slater, Jameson, Purnell) have been OK, but have had good and bad outings both midweek and weekends. The freshmen, as a group, have struggled whenever they've been used except for last Saturdy against LSU, where they were very good.
Thanks for the legwork.

Forgot Ty Evans. He’s been great.
He sure has. Awesome year so far. And he was recovering from an injury when the season started, so missed out on some pre-season practices and scrimmages. Tremendous defensive outfielder, but his hitting is greatly improved over his first 2 years.

Well I guess our strategy is to win enough sec series to get us to at least 15-15 in the conference and a tourney bid.

This is such bad baseball. Hang a pitch to the 8 hitter on 1-2; walk the 9 hitter (why are we calling a slider low and away to the 9 hitter on a full count); hit the leadoff man to walk in a run. Walk in another run.

Meanwhile, are we allergic to men on base. Is the only acceptable outcome a HR or a strikeout? Can we get a couple guys on base so every HR isn’t a solo shot?

I wish we would grind out every ab the way we did in the 9th. Nevertheless, keep winning those games gators.

Need to get poroduction from 6-9 tonight. Luke's Heyman's batting average is dropping like a rock after a great freshman year and a nice start to this season. Freshman Hayden Yost starting in LF tonight, Shelnut at 3B.

Saturday pitching horrendous again. Got blasted 12-2. Need to win Sunday to take the series.

The usual leaving runners stranded all thru the bottom of the 9th, the Cags hit a 2 run HR to win the rubber match 4-3.

A win is a win and the Gators win yet another SEC series. Take it and move on. This team doesn't hit that well and overall our team ERA of 6.09 is the worst in the SEC. And yet, we're still THE Florida Gators.

Well 6-3 thru the first 3 weekends and we still aren't playing well. Schedule is brutal, but we need to get to that 15 conference win mark.

I’m really impressed with these guys. The hitting is worse than anyone would have imagined. The batting average and on base numbers are horrendous. And as ocala pointed out, we’re last in the sec in era, which honestly probably undersells how bad our pitching has been. And yet somehow these guys just win SEC series after SEC series.

Well it it said that winning (and losing) is habitual.

Luke McNeillie seems to have turned the corner and found his confidence. He's been great his last 2-3 outings. Tanner Garrison seems to be getting better at the plate after earning the full time job as catcher. He's a great defensive player. The 3 troubling areas in the batting order right now are center field, third base and Luke Heyman, who had an awesome freshman year, but is slumping big time right now, with a batting average .233. Sully has tried Robertson (.234), Guy (.185) and now Yost (.190) in CF is is waiting on 1 of them to start hitting to take over the job. And While Dale Thomas is a vocal leader of the team, he's just an OK third baseman and hitting only .185. Tyler Shelnuit has been brought in from LF to play 3rd occasion and I wonder if the coach will at some point go to the experienced transfer Armando Albert there. Donay Broday was brought in as a transfer with a suppposed big bat and back-up catcher, started the season at DH, but strikes out a lot, is only hitting .209 and his role has been diminished a lot. Landon Russell has been given a few chances, but he's only hitting .071. Overall, what started the season with expectations of a deep bench has turned into a struggle to find 9 batters who can be a consistent threat. We only have 2 guys hitting over .300, Caglinone at .389 and Ty Evans at .375. Meanwhile, on the pitching side, only Cags, Slater, Jameson and Satin have ERA's under 6.00, which is a problem when your bats are producing. And yet, the team seems tight and they battle and so far have figured out how to win SEC series. Hope it continues.

You have to think at some point the bats will come to life. The pitching, however, appears to be what it is. Just need to keep piecing it together.

This is a big series this weekend at Mizzou to hopefully give us a little leeway in the SEC standings. Our SEC series after that are: USC, at Vandy, at Arky, UT at UGA and UK. So I’d probably take .500 out of those series, so that would be 15-12/14-13 or so.

So this series can put an additional game or two between us and .500 in league as we run through that part of the schedule.

Splits on midweek vs SEC pitching. Midweek, you can save time looking for UF and just go to the bottom of the column. SEC numbers are bad but you can see some signs of life.
