2023 Baseball & Softball Thread

Gator softball plays Boston University tonight at 7 pm. Boston beat St. Joseph's 8-0 yesterday, then beat Illinois St. 2-1. They play USF today right before they play us, so will have 3 games under their belts when we take the field against them. Also, USF beat Michigan yesterday 2-1 in 8 innings and are playing Boston College right now before they play Boston U. Hopefully our game will start on time.

UF softball just run-ruled Boston College 9-0 in 5 innings. Elizabeth Hightower threw a 1-hitter with 1 walk and 7 K's. Gators scored 5 in the 1st, 4 in the 2nd and coasted against another team that came into their match with the Gators at 3-0. Florida has scored 20 runs in only 8 innings of offense. Just started a game vs. Illinois St.

Softball just gave a beatdown to Illinois St., 21-0 in 5 innings. Gators have outscored their first 3 opponents 31-2 and 1 of those 2 runs was unearned. In this game, UF had 12 hits, 2 grand slams and 16 walks. Rylee Trlicek picked up her 2nd win and everyone on the team saw action except relief pitcher Sam Bender. Olivia Gigante got her first HR as a Gator and tossed a perfect bottom of the 5th inning to close out the game. They finish up the weenend Sunday at 1 pm on ESPN+ vs. South Florida.

We have outscored opponents 41-2. Somehow, you lost 10 runs. Lol

Tomorrow’s softball game against USF is already canceled. They evidently already know there will be inclement weather.
Sunday's USF game was postponed and will be made up on April 19 when we will play them in a doubleheader instead of a single game. Heavy rain late today pushed tonight's games into tomorrow and whoever does the scheduling decided to handle our game with them that way. The link below talks about it. Our next game is Tuesday at JU and then a rematch Wednesday at home, both at 6 pm.

Lordy. They are just smacking the crap out of people right now. Would be awesome if this offensive output continued all season.
We had 37 home runs in 68 games last year and already have 8 in the first 4 games of this season. Coach Walton said increasing the power numbers was a major offseason priority.

We've got some good young arms that may not see much action this year due to our depth. Might be the deepest set of Arms Sully's had.

Bit of a surprise to see Jac Cags as Sunday starter. He certainly has the talent, just didn't know if he was ready to return from injury.
From all I've read he's fully cleared to pitch and has been impressive - hitting the high 90's with his fastball. I'm sure he'll be on a pitch count (maybe 70 or so) as Sully is always careful with his pitchers.

UF softball didn't play well today, but managed to win both games to stay undefeated. After blowing a 4 run lead and then a 6-4 lead to Bowling Green in this morning's game, they rallied late to win 10-7. Olivia Gigante started in the circle and have up 4 runs in the 3rd inning after shutting them out the first 2. UF tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd, but after neither team scored in the 4th, Samantha Bender gave up 3 runs in the top of the 5th, to put BG ahead 7-6. Elizabeth Hightower came in with 1 out and shut them out the rest of the way and the offense got 3 in the bottom of the 5th an 1 more in the bottom of the 6th for the margin of victory. Charla Echols had 2 hits and 5 RBI, Avery Goelz went 2-3 with an RBI and Skylar Wallace went 2-4 with an RBI and 3 runs scored to pace the Gators.
In the 2nd game, Rylee Trlicek got roughed up by UConn, giving up 3 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks in 3.1 innings and the UF bats just couldn't get a clutch hit most of the game. Again, Elizabeth Hightower shut down the Huskies the rest of the way and picked up her 5th win of the season, still with an ERA of 0.00. Florida cut the 3-0 deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the 4th on a 2-run double from Avery Goelz, who went 2-2 with a walk for the game. Sam Roe, who went 2-3 with 2 RBI won the game in the bottom of the 7th with a 2-out, 2 run single to end the game 4-3. Gators are 8-0 with games Sunday against Central Michigan and Delaware State.

Jac Caglionone was awesome in his first start of the mound and looked sharper than Sproat or Waldrep, who were both good. Ty Evans was the surprise hitting star of the weekend.

Gator softball looked great Sunday, blowing out 2 opponents 15-1 and 15-0, with only 4 offensive innings in each games. Tons of hitting. Lexie Delbrey got her first start of the season, throwing 3 solid innings against Delaware St. Things ramp up quite a bit later in the week when they go to Palm Springs, CA for 4 games in 3 days (Thursday - Saturday) against much tougher competition. Then the following weekend their at UAB for 3 games in Birmingham. We're 10-0 for now.

Great start. If Jac can pitch like that and lock down Sunday spot, then our weekday guys will be really good. Could be a nice season if we can keep everyone healthy.

Cags is just a stud. Maybe our most talented hitter and comes out throwing high 90s on Sunday. Unreal. If he hadn’t gotten hurt, I wonder if we would have even seen him hit. He probably would have started on Sundays all year last year and be in a mlb org right now.

Really liked what I saw this weekend. Obviously a complete roster mismatch. But looks like the lineup might be a little deeper than expected. And the pitching looks pretty deep with dudes throwing mid 90s. Plenty of guys that know how to defend their position as well.

SEC looks loaded again this year so we are going to need the deep pitching.
