2017 NCAA Baseball Tournament Thread

Dyson pitching like he wants to be a weekend starter next year. Four masterful innings thus far

I know Sully doesnt believe in putting guys on the take, but for this team he needs to. Surprised he took out the pitcher.

Zero excuse not to get this finished out with 3 outs, 3 run lead and our best guy going on the mound to get us to omaha

Now, will Igloo rush right over here to congratulate us? Like he rushed over earlier when we lost?

Gutty team. I continue to say O'Sullivan should have been SEC Coach of the Year for what he did with this team, considering the injuries, lack of bullpen depth and the anemic hitting. I cringe when I see the other teams that will be in Omaha, but then I remember we're co-champs of the SEC, beat LSU 2 out of 3 and swept FSU. Who knows what will happen?

We have the best three starters in college baseball, the best closer and a young bullpen that is starting to show its talent. The lineup's individual numbers aren't good, but they do scratch some runs together. I've seen some signs of life out of the batting order. Lipput is driving the ball, and Rivera looks like he's shaking the rust off a little bit and hopefully JJ keeps coming. With our pitching, there's no reason to be scared of anyone we play. These threads are pretty funny. Typically about a dozen negative comments, followed by a "good win" followed by a bunch of handwringing about our next opponent. Similar to hoops. If you read the gameday threads you'd think we went 10-20.

It's time for the Gators to put the STRIKE-OUT WHAMMY on their butts... :D

And it's also time for the Gator's to drop their limp-sticks and pick up their bats and go to work.

But IF they lose again, at least it's not a long trip to get home...

So, the STRIKE-OUT WHAMMY it is/was,,,
and they picked up their bats... :D
OMAHA --- SWEET!

The CWS field has several teams that struggled at some time during the year, but got hot at the right time

Did you leave off UL in your bolded list at the top? You correctly included them in the match-ups

5 of the Top 8 seeds are in Omaha. Stanford shouldn't have been an 8 seed. There were a couple of other teams that deserved it ahead of them, IMO. To me match-ups don't matter much in the CWS. All teams there have pitched well and hit good enough to get there. It's just whichever team gets hot and gets a break here and there. Hopefully it's our turn, but FSU has been playing lights out the last 3 weeks or so.

And isn't FSU still holding the record (20-something) for the most trips to the CWS without actually winning it all?

But yeah, I hope it's now the Gator's turn, and reFSUcks can continue with their record.... ;)

of course we are, and seem to be playing the perfect type team that puts us in the losers bracket immediately again... TCU is usually like a good pitching, low scoring type games team every time I've seen them in the past with some lucky swings and bats once they get to omaha when I've watched them over the years...

people get angry because I "sound" negative, but I really just don't expect much, we've done much less with far better teams in this thing...

From fat Dooley

Don’t be surprised if it’s Brady Singer on the bump on Sunday night when the Gators start College World Series play instead of first-round pick Alex Faedo. Kevin O’Sullivan was already toying with that idea Monday night after Faedo closed out the win over Wake Forest depending on how Faedo’s arm feels after throwing on one day’s rest, even if it was only two innings. It sets up to be a wide open College World Series with no real Cinderella team. Oregon State is 54-4. LSU and FSU are the hottest teams in the country. And then there is UF’s opening-round opponent TCU, which can really pitch. The Horned Frogs were wandering in the wilderness with one NCAA win in their history before Jim Schlossnagle was hired in 2003. He went 6-9 in the tournament in his first five seasons, but has won 43 NCAA Tournament games since 2009 and is making his fourth straight trip to Omaha. Of course, Sully and the Gators are no slouches themselves.

I like Dooley. He's from St. Augustine, been around Gator athletics a long, long time and has a sense of humor about his insight and writing. I was a little concerned about Singer going into the NCAA tournament because he had been less than stellar the last month or so of the regular season. But he's been very, very good of late, hitting his spots and pitching with a lot of passion. If he & Faedo are both on, the Gators are going to be tough to beat.

Lots of young guys in 2017, but coming together after steady progression across the season. I'm good with who they are, and where they are. The starters are still good, and the pen is getting better and deeper by the game it seems to me.

I will be interested to see if Dyson can have another great outing. Even with our top three guys pitching well, and even if we never drop to the loser's bracket, there will be a point where we have to relay on a guy that can connect the starters with the closer Byrne. Or even be a closer if we go to extra innings again.

The TCU game has all the earmarks of being a low scoring, long affair. Both starters Sunday are excellent and both offense struggle at times.

The good news is that Florida has excelled this year in low scoring, close games.

Here's a random Gator note, while we're waiting for Saturday. Austin Maddox heading for the big leagues. Congrats Austin! This guy was the original JJ Schwarz, hitting 17 bombs as a freshman, before Sully turned him into a pitcher. Sully's done that with quite a few of his better hitting position players. Brian Johnson comes to mind. It will be interesting to see which way he goes with Langworthy and Milchin. His preference for pitching is probably part of the reason why his teams always pitch well but struggle to hit (relatively speaking). Can't really argue with the results, though.

Speaking of Brian Johnson, he went to the DL to make room for Maddox. Hopefully not too serious. He was pitching pretty well. He was a really cool player. Great pitcher and a big, left handed bat. If I recall, Sully let him hit once in a while even after he became a starter.
