SEC Announces 2022 Softball Preseason Coaches' Poll

The Gators will host SEC preseason favorite Alabama, along with Arkansas and Tennessee who were picked third and fourth in the SEC Preseason Coaches' Poll.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Southeastern Conference announced the 2022 SEC Softball Preseason Coaches' Poll Monday afternoon after a vote from the league's 13 head coaches.

The Gators, 2021 SEC Regular Season Champions, are predicted to finish second place this upcoming season. The program picked up three first-place votes and accumulated 131 total points, while Alabama was picked the preseason favorite with seven first-place votes and 138 points.

Arkansas nabbed two first-place votes and 124 points for a predicted third place finish and Tennessee secured one first-place vote and 103 points to round out the top four teams.

Florida finished the 2021 season with a 19-5 record in conference play, which led to its league-leading ninth SEC Regular Season Championship and UF was the only program in the conference to win every SEC series in 2021.

This year the program returns a plethora of players from last year's squad, which includes NFCA All-Americans Charla Echols, Hannah Adams and Elizabeth Hightower. That trio anchors a group of 16 returning contributors from last season, along with the addition of 2021 transfer Skylar Wallace and six newcomers.

Entering their first year with the program is graduate transfer Marissa Mesiemore, and freshmen Cali Decker, Lexie Delbrey, Kendra Falby, Sam Roe and Reagan Walsh. Roe, a catcher, joined the program this January as an early enrollee and Mesiemore is a graduate transfer from FGCU.

The Gators are slated to host Mississippi State (March 12-14), Tennessee (March 25-27), Alabama (April 9-11) and Arkansas (April 22-24). In addition, Florida will host the 2022 SEC Tournament (May 10-14) for the first time since 2005 at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. Ticket information for the SEC Tournament will be announced at a later date.

Florida opens its 2022 season Friday, Feb. 11, at 5:30 p.m. against Illinois State in Tampa, Fla. at USF's tournament. The program's first home game is set for Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 6 p.m. against Jacksonville.

LOL even Fox gets it: The economy is 'growing' because it was off in 2020

"It’s good to remember GDP is a year-over-year number. In other words, it’s easier to have a high percentage increase in the current year if you’re rolling over a large decrease in the prior year. In 2020, red and blue state governors shut down their states’ economies to slow the pandemic’s spread.

With our economy shut down, GDP understandably declined by a significant 3.4%, the largest drop since at least 1948. So, with the bar set at an historic low of -3.4% in 2020, GDP naturally rebounded in 2021. No surprise here.

To make the nature of this 5.7% increase even clearer, let’s look at GDP dollars (as opposed to percentages). In 2019 (pre-pandemic), GDP was about $19 trillion. Because the economy was shut down for much of 2020, GDP dropped to about $18.4 trillion. In 2021, it rose again to about $19.4 trillion. That’s an increase for 2021 of 2% over 2019, a fairer comparison and a less than impressive gain.

The fact is that when states reopened, given the depths to which the economy sank, GDP was going to increase no matter what Biden did. As it turns out, GDP increased only 2% over its pre-pandemic level – and that was with gargantuan government spending."

Bottom line, as states reopened their economies in 2021, GDP growth not surprisingly recovered and would have done so – without a 40-year high in the inflation rate – had Biden simply done nothing."

48-Hours & Counting - Whispers in the Hall

48-Hours & Counting

I wanted to go over one big piece of news, and I will cut right to the chase. We talked about this a few weeks ago. One of the identifiers of knowing 100% a program wants a kid is allowing a kid to make the official visit.

This used to be a tell-tale sign of a program wanting a recruit – YOU bring him in for the official visit. Sure, from time to time, maybe we would see a school slip a kid in late in the process to only see him leave without the offer, but 99% of the time, if you make the OV, you can pick up the phone and pull the trigger with that program.

One of the things I keep mentioning about this staff is data points. We simply don’t have enough of them just yet. Point in case – Matthew McCoy. This kid was 100% all Gator, and every single site knew this heading into his original UF OV. New staff comes to town cancels all OV’s that weekend. Requests all players to do a self-evaluation and send it back to UF before UF allows them to make the OV.

Only two players even opted to do the self-evaluation because they thought it was dumb – Matthew McCoy and Nolton; both were told after the self-evaluation UF was not going to bring them in for the OV’s. However, when Stapleton & Sale were both on staff, one of the first things they did was see McCoy and later bring him in for his OV. I assumed everything was good even though it was an uphill climb because of how things went previously.

All I heard the entire weekend was how great McCoy thought things went and how he and one other player were the last two standing on the 50 in The Swamp when they were on the field, soaking it all in. I assumed things were good to go, oops. That is what I get for making a critical assumption.

Jayson Jenkins, Matthew McCoy, KD Hutchinson are just a few brought in that left without the genuine “offer,” so to speak. I never thought in a million years the way things went down with the evaluation, then having both OL coaches put in that amount of effort as well as bringing him in for the OV the last OV weekend and a critical need position this would be someone they would be ok with seeing go somewhere else but that is the current situation we find ourselves in at the moment.

It will not be an assumption I make moving forward. I misread this entire situation, and that is on me. It also means that KD Hutchinson left without an offer does not reflect how they feel it went with DJ Allen. That also is a straightforward assumption to make but one I will not make.
Either way, I needed to clear the air about MM. I hope that makes sense for all of you, and again my bad on that deal. McCoy, Hutchinson, Stewart all removed from the MLL this morning. FYI, after saying ALL of that IF UF wanted to at the last minute get this deal done they could.

No question this is a BIG battle for Mathews & Perkins but UF was the leader for sure going into the final visit weekend. If things go South I think we will know in the next 24. Right now, 50/50 on Story with Clemson and I will just go ahead and say it if he goes to Clemson that is ok imo. Miguel Mitchell was going to trip this weekend but he canceled so we should be locked in and we are locked in with Andrew S. I think we are locked in with Arlis and Caleb which is reflected by our RZ. DJ and Citizen are going to be a coin flip.

Trending elsewhere…

I know recruiting is a roller coaster, but so far today I have read on various gator sites that multiple kids are trending away from Florida. Matthews, Allen, story, and of course Perkins are all in that group. I sure hope the gators don’t strike out on everyone. I really like the due process this staff has put on recruiting and am hoping this signing day is different than ones in recent past.

What did DJ Allen Say about his UF OV?

Just like the rest of the kids this weekend.

"I had a good time was really impressed at what the university of Florida is trying to build, and my family and I enjoyed our time this weekend. Coach KC was honest with me, and we had good conversations about how the offense would work around me and what type of player he sees in me. The staff as a whole made me feel like family. I will make my decision Tuesday; stay tuned... Def in my top 2."

He was hosted by Fraziars. Said J was a great guy and loved his personality. Fraziars told him to make a decision he is happy with.

This one has a TCU feel for me bc of some of his ties there and stuff...
