Reading the Tea Leaves:
A great question was asked on the boards today, and I wanted to expand on it a little bit for everyone.
Grahambow Asked:
The last few years have been brutal with you letting us know that the staff felt "great" about a player, only to see that dude go somewhere else. Probably one of the most frustrating things was how bad they were at actually reading the room.
Thus far, it seems like when this staff tells you they feel good about someone; it actually comes to fruition.
Are you getting the vibe that if these guys tell you they feel confident about someone, we can actually feel confident about them too?
Triangle of Information:
I have lived by this for the last 12 years or so when trying to tell you which kids I think will end up being Gators.
In no order and, depending on the situation and numerous other circumstances, each of the three sides at times could far outweigh the other two, etc.
Side One – Florida – this is precisely what it means – what information I am getting from Florida. There are a TON of people that work for Florida, so depending on who the information is coming from, it is weighted on this side. Is it a DPP or an actual coach – They are weighted differently. The Florida side also includes current players. As you can imagine, this is a TON of information to go through that helps make part of an opinion.
Side Two – Families/Recruit/Handler/Trainer – this is another side of the triangle and, in my opinion, can at times be the least reliable when it comes to forming the opinion. I still have so many commit edits from kids at other schools, stories with full quotes from the family, and recruit NSD Eve only to watch them sign with another program.
Side Three: The commits themselves are a good judge and carry a lot of weight. When you get right down to it, these are the guys that absolutely are spending the most amount of time with potential prospects on visits, camps, 7 on 7, and Junior Days – Also on this side is the Industry – I have been in this industry for a pretty long time and have some great friends all across the country that are in this field. Their opinion carries a lot of weight for me. This is also the side where my opinion gets thrown in the mix.
If I get a yes from all three sides, it's straight in the RedZone you go. There are times when I keep someone out of the RZ on purpose, though for various reasons, so you can't always assume; that is pretty rare.
It gets tricky if one or two sides line, but the third is a hard no – then it comes down to feel and decision time for me. I hope this clears it up a bit.
