Ok...so sadgator has a major dilemma...

He is on Spectrum cable and they keep jacking up the costs ever quarter or so...

His cable bill is like over 200 bucks...and sadgator has the most basic of basic packages...no movies or premium anything...

The reason why this is posted on the sports board is that sadgator watches literally nothing other than sports programming...primarily college games...some local news, and the weather channel.

With advancements in steaming and ip type stuff, there has to be a better/cheaper watching alternative, but sadgator is an old fogey with very little tech savvy.

One of you cool kids please tell sadgator what the best alternative is for watching games/programming if he wants to give Spectrum the boot...

Also keep in mind that sadgator also gets his internet through Spectrum...which is probably the wrong move too...but it works well.

I'm in the same boat as you are, paying well over $200 for Comcast. I only subscribed to it only for the internet. The way I looked at it, I may as well pay the extra $70 to add the movie channels and other premiums that come with it. If any of you can find any wifi better than Xfinity, let me know.

My bill is about 130 a month with internet and most stuff but the HBOs etc and that is after the initial good 2 year deal. It seems they will give you not too bad of a deal for 1 year after the initial deal (you must call and threaten to leave to get it - usually with the disconnection dept to show you are serious) but will refuse after that when you call raising hell about the bill.

I have heard you can get a new customer deal from these same providers if you are disciplined enough to go without a deal from anyone for a month but that means your internet would be screwed also for 30 days.

I may try avoiding Direc TV and cable after this deal runs out in May 2020 myself.

Oh jameis...ok. Let me show u how to game a big company. I dont have spectrum but here is my guess. You are the main person on the account. Call and cancel. Do this on a day where u wont be home. The next day, have your wife call and get the "new customer" price... Works everytime. You're welcome in advance. It has to be someone different. Alternate doing this everytime they raise the price. They have to give it to you since there is technically a "new" customer.

This....

Yes this is what I've done. I'm on Comcast. Part 2 is almost on it's end of new customer special. AA&T U Verse is available now in my area and they are running a 18 month new special. After we run 36 months of their special Comcast will be available for a new customer special all over again.

Anybody have any updated ideas on this topic? Times have changed a lot over the past three years and sadgator is still regrettably on Spectrum.

Anybody have any updated good cable alternative suggestions? Need local and sports…that’s it.

YouTube TV - You can try it for a couple of weeks free and it has all the channels, sports and otherwise, plus locals for around $70/month including tax. You can access it via either a Smart TV or with a Roku box for each TV.

I watch everything on ESPN+. I believe its $13/mo. I think the Disney streaming package gives you Disney streaming, Hulu and ESPN+.

That won't give you all the sports, but it would cover a lot of it. Great for college football, basketball and baseball.

You can stream the national NFL games on the CBS, Fox and NBC apps, which are free. I think you can get Red Zone through Hulu.

Or SlingTv. About $45 for the premium package. Combined with Internet you’ll come out around $100.
Sling is great, EXCEPT that you can only have it on one screen at a time. If that isn’t an issue for you, it’s the best way to go.

2 options

Option 1- if you have good internet and a smart TV with YouTube, get YouTube TV, it's like 65 a month and has literally everything sports. You can watch on your phone or TV, if you have xboxes or Playstation it's super easy to download on those.

Option 2- call and cancel spectrum, have your wife call a week later and put the account in her name and have them come back out and "re-install" everything. This gets you the new customer discount.

Option 3- i know i said 2 but im giving u a 3rd. In order to get the new customer discount you need to not be a member for a month. So cancel spectrum, try youtube tv for a month, if you don't like it, go back to spectrum under the new customer price.

YouTube TV sounds like the way to go, but sadgator hears you can’t use the “last” function on a remote…that’ll hurt. Price you pay, sadgator supposes.

sadgator might just call and threaten to cancel. Maybe that will get a modest reduction.

I've had YouTube TV for about 6 months, it's been great. All the sports you want. If you call spectrum just cancel and have your wife call 2 days later and start a new account (if they question it just have her say the "previous person doesn't live here anymore".

Honestly tho, youtube tv is so good for sports, I would just try it for a month, if you hate it, then switch back. 90% of the people I refer to youtube tv love it, the others have it for a month and switch back to their old provider as a new customer at a lower cost so it's a win win

Lol…mrs. sadgator could literally say “I am not in contact with that person at all”…and she wouldn’t be lying!

LOL I think youtube tv has a free week trial as well so you could start that and see if u like it

This is correct. With streaming, the watching experience is quite different - it is similar to watching videos on Youtube...that is find a video (show/game), click on it, wait a few seconds while it loads and then watch. Good for saving money but not good for watching multiple games at once.

Anybody ever heard of a service called Philo? They are running ads all over Spotify. Curious to know if that is a good service.

Never heard of them, youtube tv has a free trial.... try it damn it. It is hard to get the older folks to try new stuff these days.

Literally the only reason I don't have it is that a buddy of mine lets me use his account.

Somehow my Spectrum bill had gotten up to $182 a month for internet and a select amount of channels. Absurd.

I was able to bully direct TV for a long tike but they finally said no so I switched immediately. I view a TV bill similar to car insurance, I'm going shopping every 6 months to a yr for the best price. I honestly love youtube tv for sports

Youtube TV is essentially your standard cable - 75/mo with tax n all - out the door. I split that with 2 other family members that are in the same city - so 25 my way.

Fiber internet via ATT is 55 flat - out the door.

That'll get you what you want though you may not have some of the same options I do - and internet can be priced differently even in a different neighborhood.

O.K. You watch ONLY Sports is internet talk for you know what. I have Spectrum like you plus a Smart T.V. which I bundle the Cable with the Internet and phone, 3 DVR’s and Cable in two other bedrooms for mid $200’s. I also have Prime, Netflix, Peacock, Paramount + ( 1923 finale last nigh. Great series ), Apple T.V. I got for free, internet on my T.V. ( ESPN + can be watched on the big screen ) and others. Finding the deals is key.
Be careful when you switch as I’m a long time spectrum guy and this new stuff may not be all that great.

You do have a Smart T.V. I hope? A few $ is probably the issue given your $0 paid to Rivals in 22 years.

What do you pay for the internet service alone?
For Spectrum in Reno, NV I pay just under 50 a month. I got it down becasue I was going to cancel. It was about 80 before. On wifi I'm getting about 75 m download and 25m upload. That's straight internet...no other services for BS. I've been at this rate for about a year now.
