First top 4 list revealed tonight!

Who is in on the first slate?

I've got:
1. Ohio State
2. LSU
3. Baylor
4. Clemson

No idea what the last list will look like with each of those teams facing significant November challenges.

SEC Champion (assuming one loss or undefeated)
Big 10 Champion (assuming one loss or undefeated)
Pac 10 Champion (see above assumption)
Big 12 Champion (undefeated) OR ACC Champion (undefeated)
BIG 12 Champion (one loss with a one loss ACC Champion)

I'm thinking it will be OSU, LSU, Clemson & Mich St. I think they penalize the B12 teams as they haven't played anyone (yet).

OK...this is your "formula" for the last compilation. May end up your formula works...but that's not how the committee makes their choice, or we wouldn't need them...we'd just need a formula.:D

Do you have a prediction for the 4 teams in this week?

How do you have Stanford in the top 4 with 1 loss?

I don't think they're a top 4 team, I just think all the other contenders will knock each other off by the time we have to name 4. I could see LSU losing two more games, Bama losing one more, and I don't think we win out which means the SEC champ will likely have 2 losses. If you look at it like that, and assuming Stanford wins out, who else will have a better resume than Stanford for that fourth spot?

They will have beaten:
USC (probable 8-4 finish)
UCLA (probable 10-2 finish)
Arizona (solid 7-5 ish team)
Oregon (decent 8-4, 9-3 ish club)
Notre Dame (seems almost a lock for 11-1)

I think that would be enough to lock up #4 for them. Especially if they beat a 10-2 UCLA ball club again in their championship game. That's 5-6 quality wins.

The thread was about who are the top 4 teams tonight. Not what we think the top 4 will be at the end of the season. If Stanford wins out they have a good shot but they won't be in the top 4 tonight

If the committee is adamant that last year's results have no bearing on this year's rankings, the top 4 IMO should be:

1. Clemson
2. LSU
3. Ohio State
4. Michigan State

Clemson and LSU have the 2 best wins of the year so far. Hard to buy TCU or Baylor until they get into the meat of their schedule. LSU will be a clear #1 if they win Saturday.

That last statememt may have been true earlier in the season, but Spurrier is no longer at USCe.

I see that now. When I saw 9399's remark about November games I thought he was saying what the top 4 would be at the end of the regular season.

You were damn close

So, watching the ESPN program for the unveiling, I am damn glad Florida is in the conversation for the first time in a long time. Yes, I realize this is only the second year of the 4 game playoff, but in terms of the national title debate, the Mighty Gators are in the conversation. First time in five years.

That is great.

And barring a Chump like meltdown we will be in the conversation through at least FSU, likely the next weekend playing for a spot!

I failed to factor in the love for Bama.

Yep...'Bama gets more benefit of the doubt than any team in college football. I don't think the committee really stepped out on a limb though...'Bama and LSU matched up this weekend cleans it up. As always...November will not disappoint.

Bama at #4 is a joke, but it's all going to get cleaned up over the next few weeks anyways starting with the LSU/Bama game this weekend. Lots will change from now until the final poll.

The Big 12 shuffle is nuts right now. Three undefeated teams, and Oklahoma with one loss. Really this would be a great time for Stoops to get the Sooners back in the discussion and more. I prefer the balanced team approach to the "score and let score" identity at the top of that conference.

Yea Bama being 4 is ridiculous. I love how they argued for Bama by citing victories over Wisconsin, UGA, and A&M with a 'tough loss' to Ole Miss. Meanwhile UF has also beaten UGA, blew out the Ole Miss team Bama lost too, and our 'tough loss' to LSU is also more impressive and we sit at 10. Now I don't think we're a top 4 team at all, but the inconsistent logic is what pisses me off.

Brad Edwards said it best though, the committee didn't learn from their mistakes last year at all. TCU won games and dropped in the rankings and the face the same possibility again this year. Bama could win out and still not win their division if Ole Miss also wins out. So at that point how do you keep a team at #4 who didn't even win their division much less the conference? They'd have to drop Bama in that scenario and then people will be all 'how do you drop a team who has done nothing but won games?' This is all so stupid. There doesn't need to be a committee. Get a formula everyone can agree on that takes into account SOS, etc and let UNBIASED computers decide. Still makes no damn sense to me how people complained about bias in the last system and their solution was to add even MORE of the human element which just brings more bias.

I am wondering how much of this is based on the remaining schedule. The committee knows that LSU will play Bama, which means one moves up, the other down.

I still say all of this will lead to an 8 team bracket before much longer....something like the 5 major conference winners get in automatically, the highest ranked winner from the other conferences, and two at large bids decided on by committee.

I see the initial rankings as flawed. I don't worry though as things will play out, always do.

But I am willing to credit the committee with one thing: since its inception they have clearly stated that quality wins would be the BIGGEST factor in their decisions and #1 and #2 both have wins over other top ten teams.

Reese Davis pointed that out. Long said the difference between 10 and 4 was not that much. I am not sure I buy all that.

One thing the committee demonstrated is that past rankings do not necessarily impact future rankings. They moved teams up and down all the time. So I am not worried about any of that. Bama is probably the only top ten team that does not control its own destiny. If those top ten teams below Bama keep winning, they will move ahead of Bama. Especially the ones with very tough schedules coming up. Bama has LSU this weekend and that is it.

Yep.

There is no 'SEC bias' but there is a Bama bias, and I'm sick of it. Kinda like UNC, UK, and Duke in basketball, it's kinda ridiculous.

Seriously...you guys know the decision to put Bama at 4 is highly based upon their matchup with LSU this weekend.

They can hype the hell out of it.

Again, in the next 5 weeks it will all balance out and become clearer.

Florida just needs to focus on getting to Atlanta at 11-1. Do that and win the SEC? We're in. Regardless.

Yep. But Bama will drop faster than a recovered Simon Bishop should they lose this weekend.

It ain't really about us, everything you say is true regarding us. It's about one school being put on a level above everybody else. Truth be told I'm not so sure that even if they don't win their division they wouldn't get in the top 4 if they won out. I mean they've already gotten the chance to play for a title despite not winning their damn division once, the clear bias just pisses me off.
