What DC could we get

I'm not familiar with young, up and coming assistants ready to step into a DC role. JfJ posted a bunch; of that group, I think I liked the DC at Liberty the best, but WTF do I know?
The issue I have with the guys that JFJ posted is none of those guys are currently at P5 schools or have ever been DCs in a major conference. Are they ready to make the jump to the SEC? None of them really stand out to me.

Paco,

Agree with your statement about the lower level of competition the DCs I suggested have faced.

In reading this board, I feel that posters criticize Grantham for two main reasons -

  1. His inability to get his players lined up correctly & quickly
  2. His failure to adjust & adapt to new wrinkles suddenly presented by opposing offenses.
Throwing shoes & USL penalties also mentioned but those are more attributable to the players themselves - realize coaching SHOULD correct that, but in the heat of a game some USL perhaps to be expected - but not the shoes ! LOL

IMO, Gators basically have two choices - bring in a younger, more adaptable DC from a smaller conference and back him up with some quality defensive analysts or promote from within & bring in a position coach.

Again, IMO, quality DC from a P5 school more likely to want to transition to a HC position. Also they tend to be much older & less appealing to recruits. Despite InstaGator's comments. Grantham not much of a recruiter, which doesn't help us either.

We brought in Randy Shannon from Miami - a P5 school & that didn't work out.

FWIW -
Bama DC Pete Golding came to Tuscaloosa after coaching defensive backs and handling the defensive coordinator duties at the University of Texas-San Antonio the past two seasons.

UTSA much smaller than Cincinnati & others schools whose DCs I posted; yet Bama's defensive stats much better than ours - realize that he is NOT responsible for all of that improvement, but he is a major component.

The last time we promoted from within - Steve Addazio - OL coach to OC when Mullen left for Miss State, we didn't do so well either.

No easy answers & no way to tell how Mullen will go - Hell, he might even bring Grantham back !

Paco,
curious about your thoughts on whether or not Mullen should replace Grantham ?

I think Grantham should be replaced. I don’t think Mullen is going to pull the trigger though but we will see.

If Grantham leaves I would like to see a younger coach with lots of energy ( like Nick Savage) that can relate to the recruits even if he comes from a G5 school. I know Insta likesTG but I’m afraid the game is passing him by. Beating a dead horse here but damn get them lined up.

IMO, Better for recruiting also

Nick,

Totally agree.

Always a crapshoot when you replace a staff member, but the way our defense is going, I feel that we need to be proactive & act before NSD !

Also think we need to hire some quality defensive analysts.

Urban Meyer-“The top coordinator hire, to me, in all of college football was Chris Ash. He’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever been around. What he’ll give to the Texas staff, he’s been a head coach. He was much more than a defensive coordinator. He was our defensive coordinator the year we won a national championship. I hired him. He came in and changed a lot of things on defense. Brought in rugby tackling. But beyond that, every player issue with things, I would always lean on him. He’s that good of a coach. He’s, by far, the best coordinator hire of the year.

Again. If Strong haven't coached at Florida, not a single one of you would mention him.

I also don't know if his defensive schemes have updated for modern offenses.
I don't agree with you for shit much. But I kind of do on this. I remember Strong for pressuring the offense until 3rd down and then playing a soft NFL zone. That ain't working in today's college world. I am sick and tired of of having DBs laying off receivers with a 10 yard cushion. I'd rather play bump and run and take chances with getting burned. Hell, the way tall receivers are being developed these days, double coverage doesn't work anyway.. Times have changed, but Grantham has not. He can't get his guys lined up, much less in position to succeed. It's maddening.

I’ve heard lots of good things about Ash. However the Texas defense was terrible this year so not sure what to think.

it must feel nice to be right for once.

My perception is that 2020 was a highly unusual year in regards to teams not being able to practice much together due to Covid. And when things started moving the offenses synched it up faster and better than the defenses. This seems true all over the country, as games were high scoring on a regular basis. I have never been a fan of Grantham going back to his days at Georgia, but his defenses were ranked pretty high until this year. I think he's going to get a pass on this season, as will a lot of coaches. My only concern is that if there's a rush to judgment and he leaves, who are we going to get that is better? With that said, just an average defense this year and we would be undefeated and ranked #1 right now. It's a shame to have wasted such a potent, dynamic offense to have a 9-3 or 8-4 season, but here we are.

Alot of this is somewhat true. However the small issues like getting the players into position at the last minute causing penaltys at costly times. Alot of bad defensive calls that had players pointing and looking tothe sideline has nothing to do with covid that's pure in game/scouting and coaching. Not too mention the lack of discipline with the defensive players that really cost them big time. These issues are traits that continued week after week regardless of opponent. And the same things that has preceded Grantham prior to this stint.

2018 = #9 Defense in the Nation
2019 - #7 Defense in the Nation.
2020 - What a moronic loser, fire his ass....

PS
Recruiting? UF's top 4 rated 2021 recruits are #2 CB, #5 SDE, #8 WDE, #6 S.
So obviously no decent recruits want to play for that know nothing chump... 😏

Carry on....... 🤣

Most of that was inflated because we did well against FCS schools and FSU. Any good coordinator would take him to the woodshed on a daily basis.

So I don't know if this is true, but I saw it posted that we gave up 28.6 points a game this season, the worst since 1946 when we went 0-9.

Yap-Yap-Yap......

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida coach Dan Mullen knows the questions are coming at this point.
Where do you stand with defensive coordinator Todd Grantham?
Will he be coaching with you in 2021?
Is there anything you can do to fix the defense short of making a coordinator change?

"It’s very easy to point and say, 'Defense bad, we have to change everything,'" Mullen said. "Or you look at what the issues are. It’s like, hey, if my wrist hurts I don’t just cut off my arm. Let’s go figure out what the problem is. If I have to cut my arm I cut my arm, but that’s not where I’m starting. We’ve got to evaluate every aspect of it after the season, see where we’re at and go from there."

Which means some defensive position coaches will sacrificed . Grantham 2021 returns

You want Adam Fuller? I think pacos choice is the young hot little thang running around out there. Not sure who is available but im not sure if you get a huge upgrade over Grantham. There are just not a lot of elite DCs out there that are currently DCs.... You have to reach like we did for Pruitt. If you cant find a proven dc do you think UF should "roll the dice" on an unproven but high potential guy like we did with pruitt?

Nole troll why don’t you kiss Gene Williams shoes and go home? You must’ve really pissed of his Gestapo?

I would steal the Oklahoma DC if possible. He turned a defense that was chronically bad into a decent unit in the Big 12. Not easy to do. His teams play as a unit, not as 11 guys out there each doing his own thing, like we have.

With the way CFB is now, the days of having a defense average 15 ppg is over. All I want is a defense where everybody knows their role, gets lined up on time, tackles with fundamentals, and runs to the ball. Will we give up 30+ points occasionally? Yes. But giving up 38 points should be the worst game of the season, not the best.

I like Mullen enough but if he won’t fire that loser he can GTFO with him too. He shouldn’t get to use Grantham as a scapegoat next year when the defense is garbage again. It’s obvious to everybody but him apparently that Grantham needs to go. But Mullen is always the smartest guy in the room.

From the rumor mill it seems Mulens still thinks just that. Because word is just some position coaches have been sacrificed. Doesn't surprise me with Mullens he is a risk taker. A all in or lose type personality. Him firing Todd would make it seem as if he was wrong. Just going to bite him in the ass again.
