We choked BUT..

Appleby played great. The one guy everyone thought would be the weakness is practically the only guy that showed up. And I dare say that had we stayed aggressive he would have brought us home a win.

Appleby had a great first half.

The loss sucked, but Tennessee is going to lose at least 2 of their next 3 games. No chance in hell they beat Florida, Georgia, TAMU, and Bama in 4 straight weeks.

If we can play more consistently, we are still fine in the East. This is our easiest schedule in years.

I don't agree that the gameplan had anything to do with the QB. Why would it? The first half game plan was wide open and the QB did fine. Not to mention Appleby made more than a handful of throws Del Rio isn't even capable of making. The guys on the radio show even talked about it after the game pointing out numerous examples of plays we called with Appleby that we didn't call with Del Rio because he had the arm to make those throws. Appleby's 296 yards is the second most passing yards for any QB under McElwain. It wasn't the QB...the coaches just left their sack in the locker room at halftime trying to sit on a lead. Ain't nobody to blame for that but them.

im saying I think that Jake would have had his come out party in this game as well taking advantage of that pitiful secondary the same way Appleby did. That's what he did when we opened it up against UK and it would have looked the same. You can ask danny, we were texting before the game and I told him I thought Austin would have a big day. Either way the coaches blew it in that half

Just from his stature, athleticism and arm, he looked an NFL QB standing in there. He just needs to continue learing the offense. Its ashame we only have him for one year.

Except for, you know, 38 points.

Had we actually you know, attempted to score in the second half we could have sustained some drives which would in turn have given UT less chances at it. Also would have been great to kill their momentum and counter at any point with a score of our own while they rattled off 38 straight. Instead we just kept punting it back to em so they could keep scoring. The defense sucked, but just pointing at 38 points and putting all the blame on them is simplistic. They've carried this program for so long that people act as if its unrealistic to ask the offense to pick up the slack from time to time, especially against a rag tag defensive group missing starters all over the place. Its a game of momentum and once it got rolling downhill no other unit on the team did anything to pick up the slack, not the offense and certainly not the special teams. But lets single out the defense anyway.

My point has nothing to do with TOP.

To simplify it, here's the sequence to start the second half.

1. UF defenses forces TO
2. UF has a chance to put the game away
3. UF goes 3 and out 5 or however many straight possessions
4. UT gains momentum
5. UT runs away with the game

The defense was absolutely atrocious, no excuses. They weren't tired and they were undisciplined. All I'm saying is UT was lighting them up and when we get in a situation like that we need to counter offensively by scoring which is where my support comment comes from. Hell if you can't score at least flip the field to make it harder for UT to score. Instead we were field punts inside the 5, going 3 and out, and giving them the ball at the 40 over and over. We continued to run, run, run, punt while UT picked up more and more momentum without attempting to counter. That's a recipe for an avalanche, and that's what happened.

I am with you. The three and outs killed us. I dont think we had to score TD's every drive but at least cross midfield and let the kicker get three points and the punter down the ball at the 15...or worst case scenario the 25.

It was just all around a sucky half of football.

I loved how we attacked the newby CB. Tyrie Cleveland showed he could catch the long ball. Why not put Callaway and Cleveland on the field together and keep going deep. If the CB had help from the safety covering Callaway...throw to Tyrie.

It was nothing complicated to figure out how to score. Attack the corners with the deep ball.

I am not arguing that we did not take the air out of the ball on offense. I am not arguing that was not a mistake. I am not arguing that was NOT a judgment mistake by Nuss and McElwain.

I am arguing that it would not have made a difference. Tennessee scored five consecutive time they had the ball. Five.consecutive.times

We could not stop them. Even a perfect first half for the Florida offense did not yield five consecutive scoring drives.

And like someone else mentioned, the only reason we only lost by 10 was because Tennessee dropped five passes in the first half. And sat on the ball to end the game

Some of You guys are talking about our team like the 2nd half of the 3rd quarter and the 1st part of the 4th quarter didn't happen.

We played 1 good half. Our lack of depth at defense was exposed.

They dropped passes in the first half because they were terrified of getting smashed and the defense was hurting them all over the place, in the 2nd half there was no one within 15 yards of all their catches.

"They dropped passes in the first half because they were terrified of getting smashed and the defense was hurting them all over the place"

Now that's funny. I don't care who you are:D

Dobbs' throws were behind the receivers for much of the 1st half. But there were just some plain drops. UT STILL Drove the field on the #1 defense in the nation twice but kept screwing up. Don't pretend that it was North Texas and you only gave up 53 yards for the game again.
You held on Downs after Calloway muffed that punt on the 2 yard line. The two TEs both dropped TD passes and Tabor picked off a pass in the end zone to stop one drive. Another stalled at the 10 yd line and we kicked a FG.

And as crappy as our OL is, you still only sacked Dobbs once and Florida led the nation in sacks. Ohio got him 3 times the week before. Va. Tech and Appy. State got him twice each.

UT left 3 TDs on the field in the 1st half and another at the end that Spurrier would have put in the end zone were the shoe on the other foot and he was still the Florida coach. That would have been 9 TDs given up were it not for poor Q/B and receiver play by Tennessee in the 1st half and a coach who has always shown mercy late in the games he won.

You got some defensive problems and no running game on offense. Your OL is as bad as ours and that LT is too slow to handle good DEs. Barnett ate his lunch in the 2nd half.

Your LB corps are strong against the run but weak against the pass and if your DL can't get to the Q/B, your underneath will get shredded because you play man coverage. When your safeties try to creep up to help your LBs then they get burned by the pump fake on the slants and flairs out of the backfield and the Q/B throws over the top

Now this is how you smack talk.

Nice analysis. I agree with a lot of it, some I do not.

I agree that UT shot itself in the foot in the first half and I did not think that would continue in the 2nd half.

It seemed to me that UT controlled the LOS in the 2nd half on both sides of the ball. Our defense was on the field a ton and we lack depth.

These games happen. Momentum is critical in college football.

Congrats on the win and good luck in your next 3 games.

three of those drops were because the guys were horrified of what was coming behind them, the kamara drop was just a flat out drop in the redzone.. you are not all the sudden some football expert because your favorite team won a game once in 12 years... you are adapting the bama syndrome right now their fans talk down to other teams fans because their team wins some games.

and Wilson picked the ball off in the endzone not Tabor.. funny you talk about sacks, I've had many conversations even with the holy of holdies fan base in bammers about how UT was getting away with absolute murder holding and jumped offside 3 times before we snapped the ball on defense in the 2nd half.. This is nothing new for Florida and it obviously won't go away

Don't care about who intercepted that crappy throw by Dobbs. It was the wrong read and he tried to force a ball in there like he was Peyton Manning in 1998 instead of Peyton Manning 2015.

And quit using the crybaby"The refs are against us and let the other team get away with murder"

MAN UP

this is exactly why officials can do whatever they please, one side of thousands of people will agree with it no matter how bad it is.. just like politics

That is very true

no more than the UT defense

We have an AA C/B out with a broken ankle, and both starting LBS out. One an ALL SEC OLB out re-injuring his shoulder he had surgery on in the off season and the MLB out with a High Ankle Sprain.
Had to replace both starting safeties from the previous 3 years. One of the new safeties is Ralph Abernathy's grandson, a C/B who is playing out of position due to necessity. the other, well you saw him a lot. . Todd Kelly Jr.
Sutton, the CB led the nation in Punt Returns last year. Had 3 Punt returns for TDs. That hurts ST.

Yeah, UT has problems on defense. Lots of them. Got only 5 Seniors. Two DEs who rotate the same position and the C/B who got burned so badly in the 1st half. He got benched in favor of a True Freshman. Sutton, the C/B with the broken ankle and a 5th year MLB who plays on ST mostly

Got a sorry OL too. Just now got our starting RT back but our Center is out with a High Ankle Sprain. He had to play the 1st 3 games due to the RT being out. Got held out Saturday to try to heal a bit.

There are only 12 seniors on the entire team and half of them are reserves. The remaining players are still learning and they make the mistakes of youth.

and that's why they will have a hell of a time the next 4 weeks

I have a feeling Dobbs never has another passing game like this against a decent SEC team this year. For some reason we tend to make QBs like him and LSUs Harris look like good passers for a week.

Yep.

The game Harris had against us last year was his second best performance of that year, from a QBT standpoint.

The game Dobbs had against us this year was the second best...of his entire career.

I just don't see this lack of depth on defense...maybe at the LB spot but that is it.

like i said, in every big game our DB's make the most blunders you will ever witness. It's a thing now

That TOP thing needs to stop being talked about, it doesn't matter if it was the same because we ran a slow pace, they didn't have the ball long because they scored fast on a defense left out there too damn long and in bad field position.

So the TOP was the same..... but different?

The argument that our defense had no reason to be tired in the 2nd half because the TOP was the same is inaccurate

Yea, I agree. Those Florida DBs did look tired chasing those wide open UT WRs. Not sure why they were tired though.

I agree. You don't see ANY post of mine predicting a single Vol victory ( unlike all you Nostradamus' who were predicting a UF romp)

UT has played 3 good quarters out of 12 all year.So many shoulder & Ankle injuries. So going through this bloody buzz-saw of a schedule is going to be a tall order.

Only offsetting thing is other teams get injuries too. Playing 8 SEC games + 4 takes a toll on every team other than Alabama as they have 5* recruits riding the bench waiting their turn.

o_O Mc-LDR or Nuss-Happy-by = 7-9 season wins at their very best.
Neither will ever beat a good defense without miracles and/or massive luck...
JMOHO of course and as always...

UT is certainly a buzzsaw this season.

By how many points in total will UT win their next 3 games by?

If I knew answers like that, I'd be rich off the Vegas bookies.

Every year, we have this 4 game or 5 of 6 game killer part of the schedule and have not had the depth or talent to withstand it. Playing Nationally ranked teams like Oklahoma, Oregon,Notre Dame, UCLA, etc then after a "Breather" U/Ga, U/F, then the other SECW opponent like Arky, Miss. State, Ole Miss( the once a decade when they are actually both good), TAM this season, next year, LSU, then always Alabama on the 3rd weekend of October.

Could lose all 3 games. Could win all 3 games. Or any number between. I got no say in the matter. Only God does and he hasn't liked us for a longggggg, long time.

Hoping he's changed his mind.

LSU and Arkansas are easy? Georgia with probably nothing to lose? Unless we make some personnel changes on defense and get more creative and grow a pair on offense,, we are looking at another 1-2 losses in the SEC. And we got our step sis still to play.
