Urban to the Jags?

Urban Meyer telling associates that Chargers are interested in him while Jaguars close in

"...Meyer, who has been talking to associates and former assistants as he mulls the composition of a potential NFL staff, has also informed others that he has a strong possibility to coach the Chargers, league sources said, although the veracity of that sentiment is being disputed. League sources indicated that it would be highly unlikely for the Spanos family to cede the kind of control and structure that Meyer would demand; he (Meyer) does have ties to owner Dean Spanos, however, and has been around the team in recent years and attended some games as a guest of the team at their old venue in Carson, Calif.

If Meyer were to take the job in Jacksonville, league sources have pointed to former Browns general manager Ray Farmer as a possibility to serve in a general manager role, while Meyer is also a big proponent of Ohio State's assistant athletic director, player personnel, Mark Pantoni, who has earned numerous accolades for his recruiting evaluations and who also worked for Meyer at Florida. If I was Urbs, I'd go to San Diego. The weather is so nice there.

Urban Meyer is headed to the NFL.
The longtime college head coach is leaving his job as a Fox analyst to become the next coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to sources.

Curious to see if he ends up like Pete Carol or more like Saban.

Country,

Only 3 coaches have won it all at both the College & NFL level.
Paul Brown
Jimmy Johnson
Pete Carol - 1 step ahead of the NCAA who ended up vacating his college football title ! LOL

When the NCAA "adjusted" his won loss record, they stripped him of 14 victories - going from 97-19 to
83-19 !

Carol hasn't been caught by the NFL - yet !

I think you need to add Barry Switzer to your list

I'm thinking the announcement of Urban Meyer will come in the next few hours.

GD3

Just saw a write up on that !

"...JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jaguars are working toward finalizing a deal for Urban Meyer to be their next head coach, a person in the league with knowledge of the negotiations told the Florida Times-Union Thursday.

There's a chance the Jaguars may officially announce the hire later Thursday or Friday, but they have not scheduled a news conference yet to introduce Meyer.

From the start, Meyer has been the Jaguars' top target to replace Doug Marrone, who was fired on Jan. 4 after finishing with a franchise-worst 1-15 record and losing 21 of his last 24 games.

First Coast News, a news partner of the Florida Times-Union, ran a photo of Meyer exiting a private plane Thursday afternoon at Cecil Field Airport in Jacksonville."

Done deal per ESPN. I truly hope Meyer succeeds in Jax. We were living in Clay County, just south of Jacksonville, when the city was courting NFL teams, including the Colts. It was very exciting when the Jags came in and those first few years with Coughlin, Brunell, Boselli, etc. were great. Would love to see the team competitive again.

Meyer was named the sixth head coach in Jaguars history Thursday, and he left little doubt about the importance of what he and the franchise will do on April 29, 2021 - use the No. 1 selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.

"Who we pick at that quarterback spot – that's going to be one of the most important decisions I've made in my lifetime, along with the partnership of our owner and general manager," Meyer said.

Khan on Meyer: "One man clearly separated himself from the field. He's a winner, a leader and a champion. He's the man we want and need in Jacksonville. He wants the challenge. He's ready."

Among the topics Meyer discussed most often Friday was his decision process to not only return to coaching, but to do so in the NFL.

Meyer said he first began considering coaching in the NFL about a decade ago. "I started getting some phone calls and it made you wonder and it made you think," he said. "I've had some very good friends in the National Football League, and I would sit down and have very confidential conversations with coaches, even some general managers, about just what it's like."

Meyer emphasized Friday that his most important conversations have been with former players who played in the NFL. "That didn't start until this past year, probably around December," he said. "It was about a six-month journey that I went on and had very in-depth, detailed conversation with some of the players. I've always considered it, always thought about it, but not until the last 12, probably 13, months now.

I just want to be educated. I spent a lot of time this year on the salary cap, understanding roster management and I just want to be very well educated, and it's something that's obviously going to be critical to our success."

Got this off ESPN.com Sunday:
Michael DiRoccoESPN Staff Writer
Jaguars coach Urban Meyer is talking to former Atlanta interim head coach Raheem Morris about becoming his defensive coordinator, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. In addition, Scott Linehan will interview Monday for the offensive coordinator job. Linehan spent the 2020 season as LSU's passing game coordinator. Morris (Tampa Bay 2009-11) and Linehan (St. Louis Rams 2006-08) are former NFL head coaches.

ocalaman,

Both Morris & Linehan's NFL Head Coaching stints were some time in the past & unimpressive.

Morris - 21–38 (.356)
Linehan - 11-25 (.306)

Not sure that these are the right Coordinator hires.

But good coordinators unlikely to leave a winning team & jump on board with an unproven HC with no NFL experience like Urban Meyer & a team like the Jags.

They may be like Will Muschamp - good coordinator - poor Head Coach.
But since Urban is the HC, that may be good enough.

Since 2011 the Jaguars have had a streak of losing seasons and draft busts. With 2017 the only winning season in the last 10 years.

But all those draft picks & cap room can't be ignored & Urban absolutely has an eye for talent & the ability to build an organization.

Urban - “I’m not going to jump into a situation where I don’t believe we can win,” said Meyer, who won titles at Florida (2006, ’08) and Ohio State (2014). “I won’t do that.”

He feels as if Jacksonville has everything he needs to make the move successful: an opportunity to land a franchise quarterback, a chance to mold the league’s youngest roster and the financial support to provide players with the “best of the best.”

Hoping for the best from Urban Meyer & the Jags !

Agree with everything you're saying. I think Urban may feel he needs experienced NFL coaches as his coordinators. And I do think some guys are great assistant coaches and not so great head coaches. That may be the case with Morris & Linehan; at least I hope that's true if they are the top assistants he hires, because he'll be relying on them a lot, a least in the beginning.

Would you judge Muschamp’s DC acumen based on his record as a head coach?

Plenty of folks are good at something, but are just not cut out to be the boss. It’s the Peter Principle.

ocalaman,

Good catch !

I didn't remember Stamper very well so I followed the link.

Stamper not a position coach.

Stamper held the post as assistant athletic director of player development in Columbus, but he played for Meyer at Florida as a two-time captain, winning national titles in 2006 and 2008.

He helps lead the “Real-Life Wednesdays,” and other initiatives designed to help the athlete balance football and life off the field holistically.

Stamper is a Jacksonville native, so it’s also an opportunity to come home. It’s hard to blame a guy for that, and we wish him the best.

How many times has a good/great player screwed up off the field ?

Urbs is serious about the quality of the environment for his Jags' players.

Meyer is currently hiring, so take the money and run:
Get out of Socialist UF while the getting is still good.

DC and/or DL Todd Grantham
OC Dan Mullen - In a decade as an SEC HC, he's never won an SEC-C, so he never will....
The possible drop in salary would be offset by the greatly reduced stress and the UF/UAA/AD BS.
-----
WR's Billy Gonzales
OL John Hevesy
QB's Brian Johnson

PS to Meyer. Drop QB TL for KT.
Then use the #1 pick trade to get both Pitts and UA WR Smith instead.

There are lots of genius UF fans that can tell the new AD who to hire to easily replace all of those bums....

I kinda like the last couple of sentences.
