As one who has always thought the college athletes deserve better treatment, especially in the revenue generating sports, I feel college sports is standing at the precipice.
IMO there are three dangers that if not addressed could spell the ruin of college sports.
1) NIL - I have always wanted the players to be awarded a piece of the $Billion pie, but if guidelines and guard rails aren't put in place soon it could spell destruction of the fan appeal and dedication enjoyed by college athletics. There needs to be some kind of "reasonable salary cap". Otherwise, it will boil down to which booster clubs are the richest, and recruiting will become more of a "Wild West" cesspool than it already is currently.
2) Transfer Portal - We've gotten to the point where some kids transfer every year. Even the pros have contracts which restricts player movement for a certain amount of time. Right now college sports is "free agency" on steroids. Players come and go at will. Like NIL, it's become a money game. There needs to be a 2-transfer limit rule. The first one is a "freebie", no restrictions. The second one comes with the old one-year "sit out" rule.
3) - Gambling...! I have no solution for this one. It is obvious to me, when every other commercial is for a betting site, sooner or later we are going to have a scandal that going to shake the very foundation of college athletics ( I have the same opinion of the pro game). Yes, I know there have been betting incidents in the past, but this has become an epidemic. You can now bet on everything from the score to whether the waterboy is going to spill the GatorAid. When there is this much money on the line, the crooks and grifters come out, and they have a way of finding the weak link to use to their advantage. It is already out of control!
Just my opinion...
