Today, while you are eating barbecue and drinking beer and having a fun time, take a second to thank the people who paid the ultimate price. This is their day, not yours.

My drinking buddy in the Army just before I left after 6 years made a career out of it and was killed in the early part of the Iraq war years later. Randy Rhen was his name.

He hadnt met his wife yet when I left the Army.

My Dad was at Pearl Harbor, Midway, the Solomons, Okinawa and briefly in the Aleutian Island during WW11. He never would talk much about it. He was in the Navy obviously and did once tell me he was never afraid of dying until the kamikaze attacks at Okinawa. Why, because he said that most of them had already accepted the fact that they could possibly die and by Okinawa they knew the war was nearly over and hated to die after 4 years of fighting. The only time I ever saw him cry was when he recalled fallen buddies.
