The time is now, if we want him.

Personally the time is now if we want to hire Brent Venables as our next head coach. The Clemson defensive coordinator has done a fantastic job at Clemson as all of the staff has. Venables has expressed serious SEC head coaching interest as of last year when he went into serious talks with Auburn. Clemsons staff is fantastic with recruiting and Venables is a huge part of why they are so successful. The window is short but with Clemsons disappointing season the time is now to take a shot at hiring him.

As bad as it gets for this year, I think Mullen will not only be here next year....but the year after....IF UF wins 8 regular season games next year.

They can use the excuse of improving.

BV might be gone before a UF HC change.

Mullen's not going anywhere. Most likely will serve up Grantham at seasons end..

I think Cincinnati's Luke Fickell would be a good choice. Through the years either Venables just refused to leave Clemson or he's has never gotten past the 1st interview. Do you really want a life-time asst. rebuilding the program? I know the Gator program should sell itself but y'all need someone who can recruit. Really surprised UF isn't signing Top 5 classes. That said.....Brent would jump at the job.

Don't disagree with this.

I really do like Fickell as a HC....too bad we're no better than windows shoppers though. That being said, there's no real incentive to leave Cincy. They can get to the playoffs....he gets paid pretty well(probably even more after this season). ...and would have longer job security.

No offense to you guys but why would Venables want any part of this mess? He could have jumped to a HC position long ago if he wanted. He strikes me as a career assistant who doesn't necessarily want a HC position.

Agreed, and considering his salary, I can't say I blame him for staying at Clemson.

He's had lots of "feelers" and programs interested in him, but by all accounts he and his wife like where they are, he makes great money, and he doesn't have all the heat of being the head guy.

He better be gone if we go 8-4 next season as that would mean he is still losing the games we have to win to compete for the SEC.

Then why was he in serious talks to take the auburn HC job last year….

…says the guy who wants our program to emulate Georgia…

Good grief indeed…

Seems to have worked out for UGA to emulate Bama, didn't it?

What exactly would be emulated? Being #1 and college playoff bound? Being a serious contender for the last 7 or so years?

How awful of me.

This is yet another of your doozies that I mentioned before. You act like a spurned man who claims he has sworn off women(DC) because of a bad ex.

Good grief doubled.

Florida should never emulate Bama…or UGA…

never…

Lol what a selfish way of thinking. You act like red and black streamers would be coming down after winning a UF natty.....simply because the HC was a former DC.

Not because we hired a former UGA or Bama assistant, but because he was a DC.

But I guess 4-5 and looking at an abyss worse than any DC left UF with is more to your taste as long as it's an offensive minded coach.

My pick would be Kiffin though I know a lot of people would be against that. It sounds like Mullen's firing wouldn't be super hard to deal with as people are claiming its to be paid as 6 million initially then 1 million for 6 years after that. Not sure what kind of money it is to buy out Kiffin at Ole Miss.

Didn’t he make a few “enemies” in some UF circles?

I'll take a hard pass on Luke Fickell. Hell, even the Sargent Carter lookalike Butch Jones didn't do so bad at Cincy. If any of you remember, Fickell actually inherited a 11-2 pOSU team when The Sweater Vest Tressel got the boot. Then we all saw what Will Muschamp did to pOSU in the Gator Bowl that season he was interim coach.

Maybe at some point in the distant future I wouldn't mind him being the OC, but there's something about him being the HC that I can't shake off.

I just don't know if I could trust him, maybe in more than one way. Which probably says something in the musical chair world of coaching.

He talked a lot of mess in 09. Can't remember what he said exactly but I think he was accusing Meyer of cheating during recruiting and then the player he bragged about getting got arrested for armed robbery later.

I think that can be forgiven. Kiffin at least already has a link to recruiting Florida and I think his non-rushed classes would be top 5 area for sure unlike Mullen.

Right now it seems that a defensive-minded coach is obsolete. However, after this season it appears that Joe Biden is coaching the football team and that is offensive indeed.

Their getaway car was a Toyota Prius with a huge magnetic UT logo on one of the doors.

Ron Zook didn’t work out so well at UF either. Like it or not UFs most successful coaches to date have been offensive minded coaches.

Noted, but to do away all consideration of a coach just because of being defensive minded is severely limiting and a gem can be passed over.

Uf has succeeded with offensive minded coaches, but it's not like there's some weird aura of the program where it's a bias to either side of the ball.

Even Meyer had once been a defensive assistant and embraced the defensive culture between 2005-2008.

And our past two were offensive minded coaches and are no better than Zook and Muschamp.

Meyer was both an OLB and WR coach through his career. Spurs was the offense mind. Pell was a defensive coach. Hall was an offensive coach. Ray Graves coached both sides of the ball.

We've had failures in offensive coaches. Dickey, McElwain, and Mullen.

I've read several times that the Fickells are extremely happy in Cincinnati. Not saying he can't be pulled away but it would take the perfect situation.

He was a complete A-hole…and the Urban/Lane war was pretty personal…

sadgator thinks Lane has evolved a bit since then, and he is a good offensive mind, but if Lane Kiffin is ever walking the Florida sideline,
sadgator is gonna have some serious soul searching to do…

Makes sense. It seems like he likes staying in Ohio since he's coached there since 2009. He hasn't taken a step out of that state, coaching-wise.

PLUS, probably very few HCs that would leave a program with ideal conditions just because another school has a more renown name and a little better money. Wbtw, it would be considered little difference especially considering that Fickell started out getting paid less than 2 million in '17 and now gets paid 3.4 million. Cindy would increase his pay even further to compete with starting offers from other schools.
