Some people who advocate for reparations also ask for such a large amount that the public would probably find it unreasonable. For example, in his 2004 debate with me, Rodney Coates asked for $12-15 trillion, which is 60 to 75 per cent of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product of $20.5 trillion in 2018.
This doesn’t mean that it’s impossible for the movement for reparations to African-Americans to succeed. A social movement for businesses, universities and churches to acknowledge their roles in slavery and the Jim Crow era has already started. Georgetown University in Washington, for example, has offered reparations in the form of preferential admissions to the 4,000 descendants of the 272 slaves it sold in 1838.
There have also been reparations for some injustices during the Jim Crow period. In 1923, about 120 African-Americans were burned out of their homes in Rosewood, Fla., and several were murdered. In 2002, victims and victims’ descendants were awarded $2 million in compensation.
Thus, attaining reparations to African-Americans is not an impossible dream. But it is, and will continue to be, much harder than it was for Japanese-Americans.

The slaves were eventually freed by White Christians in America.
What progress have they made by living here, compared to there?
Where are they today under the Constitution, 'with Liberty and Justice for all' under the law.
But what was their alternatives?
1. Not being sold but to remain as slaves in Africa with the usual treatment they receive there from their own fellow Africans.
2. Freed slaves in America that were repatriated back to Aftica/Liberia, see #1 above. (why so few wanted to return to their homelands after being freed, they vastly preferred remaining with the White Christians, than to be returned to their fellow Black Africans treatment)
3. JMOHO, but any Reparations should rightly begin with their Repatriation back to their home countries.... Any money should come from those that initially enslaved and sold them, then from those that made profits by transporting them and reselling them.... 🤓

I would not pay those idiots a single penny if they were starving to death on the side of the road...just principal to me.
Someone is gonna need a Phd in Quantum Physics to calculate all the reparation once this gets started. And everyone is gonna have to have a DNA test. I mean look I am Irish,possibly Melungeon, some Native American, some Scottish, a smidge of Jewish DNA, and have DNA going back to NE Africa. Many slaves were not even eligible for that type of repatriation since they were born in the United States

At that time, high school education for African Americans was provided in only 28 of Florida's 67 counties.[4] In 1939–40, the average salary of a white teacher in Florida was $1,148, whereas for a Black teacher it was $585.[5]

Faced with this unprecedented increase in black population, some Northern homeowners—with the help of lawmakers and other officials— wanted to segregate these new residents. Their methods changed over time. Initially, private and public institutions alike sought to restrict residency of African Americans through explicitly racist zoning laws, but in 1917 the Supreme Court ruled this practice a violation of the 14th Amendment.10
After explicit racial zoning was disallowed, white property owners often used restrictive covenants. Restrictive covenants are clauses included in the deed to a property that prohibit certain future uses. Increasingly, deeds contained language indicating that the home could not be sold to anyone who was not white. In a time when black migration was at its peak, this prevented African Americans from living in many areas.11,12
While restrictive covenants were used in Buffalo, they were less common here than in some other northeastern cities due to Buffalo’s smaller African American population.13 Racially restrictive covenants were not outlawed until the 1948 Supreme Court case Shelley v. The check isn't intended to "heal" racism anymore than restitution for theft is supposed to "heal" thieves

But reparations are due to every victim who was denied their civil liberties based on race in violation of the US constitution through 1965 at a minimum
