Positive News on Day 1

For some reason I can't open it, oozie, but does it address how much we're going to be under center. I know the thought was we would be operating primarily out of the pistol (which is what Colorado St did), with some shotgun, but the more I see it looks like the QBs are going under center a lot

its about how the QB's are taking control of the huddle and the playbook well.. They obviously did their off season homework. Which is big

Yep! Think when it's all said and done we see both QB's start games this year.

Paco it doesn't address the offense at all. I really have no idea what we'll see. Everywhere but at Bama Mac has run a spread type system. Nuss did the same at Fresno and Washington. And I'm of the belief that's the best offense for both QB's. Everyone seems to think Grier is a 'pro style' guy but he never took snaps under center in HS and ran a ton of read option and designed QB run stuff. The thought has been Grier is pro style while Treon is spread but I think both are spread guys.

If we get any kind of decent blocking out of the oline I think we will better than people think on offense. I think we have some offensive weapons in Robinson, Powell, McGee, Goolsby, Fulwood, Callaway, Worton, KT & Scarlett

Agreed...we have some players...if the OLine does a decent job then we'll win a couple of games that people don't think that we will. Provided that we stay relatively healthy.

People don't want to hear this but Grier hasn't looked good at all against the first team defense just like Driskel didn't. They cant write all the fluff they want but that appears to be reality.

Regardless of what anyone is saying, we need both.

and you know what, it's a good feeling to know we have two good ones or at least someone we can trust somewhat out there already.. that's more than we've had in a long time sadly

also, you can tell Muschamp reads this board if you saw his last presser about his defense at Auburn. Hi Will, some of us still love you. :)

Well GatorFever our 1st team defense should be one of the best units in the country, I'd expect them to handle our offense regardless of who is at QB.

You guys will be the surprise of the SEC. Too many good coaches not to be relevant in the East even with low numbers on the OL.

If we are under center a lot I think it is a big mistake. But then again, we hired Nuss, so whatever.

From Thomas Goldkamp;

Though redshirt freshman quarterback Will Grier was sharp during the open portions of practice, McElwain was not pleased overall with the connections in the passing game.

"It wasnt great by any stretch of the imagination," he said. "Pitching and catching is the No. 1 thing weve got to consistently get better at, and I know it will."

In particular, a drill working the receivers and quarterbacks through the route tree on air was sloppy. Grier didn't miss any throws, but Treon Harris had a rough go of it, throwing into the ground once, throwing behind receivers twice and badly overthrowing Chris Thompson once on a corner route out of bounds.

The aforementioned Robinson drop and a Latroy Pittman drop also came during the session on air.

Those are the kind of things that McElwain wants to clean up.

"Im probably a little more critical because theres no reason to me you should ever drop a ball on routes on air," McElwain said. "Likewise, theres no reason to me that you should ever miss the throw on routes on air. Its on air. Theres nobody else out there.

"The hard thing for guys to understand is the attention to detail and how important that route on air is. Sometimes guys do it thinking its a warmup. No. You have to understand that youve got to be critically detailed in that particular period. Thats one thing we continuously have to work on with those two groups. Its not something we take lightly."

Day Two from Thomas

- Before we walk you through some play-by-play from different drills, we'll sum up the day. The offense was extremely crisp in spurts after a pretty rough day on Thursday. Will Grier stood head and shoulders above every quarterback on the field, putting some extremely difficult routes right on the money over and over again. It was the most impressive outing we've seen of him to date, including about 10 fully open practices between spring of 2014 and fall of 2014.

-- Meanwhile, Treon Harris continued to struggle with his accuracy, often even on simple routes. But where Grier really separates himself from Harris is his ability to hit the tougher throws. Harris had a ton of trouble throwing a double move route that starts as a quick slant, works vertical, then turns out into a corner or fade route. Grier was nearly flawless throwing the route. More on this part of practice later.

"-- In the drill that was the most telling of the day, Florida worked passes on air through the route tree. Things started off excellently, with Florida getting through about 36 passes with only one drop by Ryan Sousa. Then things kind of fell apart on one side of the drill, where Harris and walk-on Jacob Guy were alternating throws. Fulwood and Sousa dropped passes in quick succession, then Guy fired behind Mark Herndon on a pass. Then the errant passes began flying quickly from the left side of the drill where Harris and Guy were working.

Schroeder couldn't catch up to an overthrown ball, then Sousa had another drop. The route, which was described above as a double-move ending in a corner route, brought McElwain over, where he began absolutely lighting into the group. He yelled "18 to 22, attention to detail!!" at one point, likely indicating his displeasure with how the routes were being run. In about 14-16 passes on the route, Harris and Guy probably only completed about four. Meanwhile, Grier and Grady were throwing the route without a hitch on the right side of the field."

Our QB's and freshmen are apparently really picking up the offense well. That's good to see since we're making somewhat of a drastic switch in philosophies.

Yeah. We're gonna try to move the ball and score points now instead of just trying to burn as much clock as possible.

Florida defensive end signee Keivonnis Davis will play for the Gators this fall.

After failing to report to campus in late June due to an academic issue, Davis was cleared by UF admissions this week and joined the team Saturday, the school announced.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder had 52 tackles and 20 sacks as a senior and won three consecutive Class 6A state championships at Miami Central. The Gators flipped Davis from Oregon State on signing day.

With his arrival, all of Florida’s 2015 class is enrolled except athlete D’Anfernee McGriff who will attend prep school this fall and make it to UF in January.

Grier is doing very well so far. He's way ahead of Harris at this point. We will see what happens once the pads go on but Harris is having the same problem he's had for awhile. He just isn't a very accurate passer.

I'm not surprised the young guys are doing the best. They have less to unlearn. Plus, they are coming in from systems that moved the ball, so they know it can be done. They aren't saturated with the stench of futility like the older guys.

One good sign is we were almost pure shotgun in that Spring game - I think they know too much under center won't cut it in the SEC when you have a talent issue.

I have not once gotten the impression Mac is high on either of our QBs.

I tend to agree with that. I think he will end up running with Grier as the starter but he won't hesitate to make a change if he sees it isn't working to well once we get into our SEC schedule.

Grier can wrap this thing up fast if he continues doing what he's apparently doing.

In this thread, it's been mentioned that Mac isn't thrilled with either QB and Grier has not looked good vs. first team D.

However, every write-up I have read indicates Grier is impressing, showing good command, sharp, etc. In fact, the write-ups read like Grier is distancing himself.

Wondering what's actually the case from people in the know....

For one our 1st team defense is very good. For two Grier is looking good at practice so far and is distancing himself from Harris. We will see when pads go on and bullets start flying if Harris can close the gap.

Supposed inside scoop from another board

"Alex Mccalister suspended the first game. Caleb Brantley not starting as of now. I expect that to change(Ivey taven) inside. Brian cox not apart of the pass rush defense (j.powell end Bullard 3 Ivey nose Alex end) I've been told that Cece is living up to the hype in practice right now and they expect him to have a role this season."

First practice in pads and Dorsey and Worton went down unable to return - waiting for an update on their status. On the O line we really can't afford stuff like this if it turns out to be serious.

Worton tweeted that he's OK. I dunno Dorsey's status.
