Ole Miss recruiting sure has tapered off...

And I wonder why???.

$$$bags and middle men out of the mix. It's obvious.

Hugh probably won't be around too much longer if they have a season like last year.

It is pretty funny. Maybe they made it a little too obvious? I guess it doesn't help when the players tweet the details of their pay-for-play schemes during draft night. Or maybe it was one of their dads that dimed that, and the players were just tweeting pictures of themselves huffing weed out of gas masks. In any event, it doesn't look like it's going to end well.

Agree, had they pulled off a 9 win season last year... Even and 8 win year season and beat their rival M State most would have forgotten about all the baggage and let it ride out. Now the pressure is on Wally Cleaver and it isn't looking pretty.

Glad we went with who we did and not Wally.

I wonder if any of the local beat guys have the guts to pose the question: Coach, you had a run where you were literally recruiting some of the best classes in the country, beating schools like Bama, Ohio State and LSU out for players. Now you're fighting with Pascagoula CC for two stars. What do you think changed?

Freeze is already prepared for that question. He will come up with something. What I don't know but he will mention family, life, quality of heart from the players, etc.

Dude was cheating at Briarcrest High School and not just magically finding Michael Oher. That made for a good movie but the process was so shady and made him look like a hero. Hell I was in Jackson, TN and his tactics were shady at NAIA school Lambuth University. He is a snake oil salesmen.

Yep - right when the microscope got put on them all at once recruiting went dead.
They even lost a 2* LB recruit to Memphis. From South Panola who has been a pipeline for two plus decades. Area high school coaches are now skiddish of them. Olive Branch High School (who produces numerous D1 players) has basically shut the staff out. Sure they will still grab a few but SP isn't automatic like it was back in the day.

we had some guys from South Panola at MSU
Demetric Wright, Derek Pegues, ...Yes some in the past slipped away from Ole Miss and ended up at State...Most in the past were Ole Miss locks. Times are changing though. Memphis now has two, one being Darrel Henderson who is a budding star.

I played with Rickey Wright from South Panola there
Yeah I forgot about him. Many D1 players came from there. Many aren't jumping into Ole Miss's lap like in the past.

I remember the first two big timers that came from there were Dewayne Rudd and Deshea Townsend that went to Bama.

Chris Young (who graduated with one of my kid sisters in 2000) along with his half brother went to Vandy late 90's/early 00's.

They believed that his success there would be even better if he came to Florida.

Though many of us knew that success was mostly underhanded smoke and mirrors.

I nvr really thought he had much on the field success. Maybe 1 season was ok. He recruited well but we now know why.

So he had no ties to UF as an assistant coach or anything?

His lucky upsets over Bama is/was the springboard of his popularity.

Those same seasons he choked it up a few games and lost when he should not have lost.

Justin Fuente out coached him with half the talent.

There was absolutely no reason why 5-star players from Florida, Georgia, and Illinois should be choosing Oxford, MS as their college destination. Everyone knew something stunk the minute they went to Ole Miss.

Something funny was going on for sure with a couple of the classes they pulled there with the big name players. They may really collapse there in the next year or two.

I dont think they were all paid for. Sometimes people are jus good recruiters. What was proven? That ole miss gave his mom 200 and some dollars for the electric bill? That happens everywhere

Explain that huge dropoff right after the spotlight got put on them then?

That was just the underlying of it. You seriously think the ones who got a big payday would speak up.

Ole Miss pays electric bills and gets away with it but UF gets probation when Galen Hall pay a child support payment.

Ole miss didnt get away with it. They have already self imposed bans and are getting more from ncaa. Of course i think they paid some but lets not act like anytime a big recruit doesnt sign with a big school that they are being paid for. It happens. In this case im sure some of the players were being paid more than an electric bill but it could have not been there or could have been there in a big way.

Some big time recruits jus like a coach and fall in love with them. Look at watson and Clemson. Who was clemson before watson?

They weren't a bad team with Tajh Boyd as a starter and Chad Kelly as a backup. CJ Spiller, Sammy Watkins, etc.

Clemson pulled in big recruits from time to time.

Hugh Freeze came out of nowhere and had his marvelous two year recruiting run...Then it disappeared.

Maybe he did have that magic. Regardless, it has tapered off in a big way.

Yeah i agree with u i think there was some dirtyness there beyond the 200 for the electric bill. I jus want to know the extent of it

Yes, same as Charlie Pell giving a player $200 to buy a suit to attend a funeral.

all the ones you see with great talent yearly

Of course. I'm sure the scope of payoffs varies and that there are varying degrees of willful blindness on the part of the coaching staffs, but you'd have to be pretty naive to think that some kids aren't getting money/benefits at just about every big time program. Some of these kids are going to have their hand out. If they look like they will be marketable down the line, somebody's going to try to do something for them.

I'll be curious to see what happens now that Foley is gone.

He had worked in the program when our near-death penalty days happened and seemingly dedicated himself to making sure nothing like that ever happened again.

Now that he's gone, I wonder if that iron fisted approach (whether that means not allowing it to happen or doings phenomenal job of keeping well below the radar) will remain.

I have a feeling it won't.

The huge drop off is because recruits don't want to commit to a school that's about to be hammered by the NCAA. The same spotlight was put on Ole Miss that was put on UF in the early 80s. The powers that be in the SEC don't like teams that don't know their place. Bama wants to be the king and they don't like it if other teams start matching their "benefits" packages in order to compete.
The fact is that ALL of the top recruiting schools offer illegal benefits. The question is, should what the NCAA deems illegal be audited and reformed?

Well Ole Miss did have a top 5 class last year depending on what service you use. Think the dropoff has more to do with the fact that they're young and don't have many spots to offer (they only signed 22) and their 5-7 record because they made a bunch of staff changes. Once they get some kinda decision I'd bet they go back to recruiting fine. Ole Miss' campus is legit.
