Pitching and defense has been the formula for Florida during a record-breaking regular season.
Yet a return trip to Omaha for the Gators could hinge on how often and timely the hits come the next two weeks.
That mission begins Friday when the top overall seed Florida (47-13) plays Bethune-Cookman (29-25) in the NCAA Gainesville Regional at McKethan Stadium (6 p.m. SEC Network).
Florida’s offense should be buoyed by the return of first baseman Peter Alonso, who took batting practice Tuesday and is on track to play in Friday’s regional opener. Alonso, who is batting a team-high .352 with nine home runs and 47 RBIs, has been out since May 13 with a broken hand suffered after being hit by a pitch against Vanderbilt.
