The team as a whole, both offense and defense, were quick to get set for plays, there was no dancing around and acting a fool not ready for plays. Kudos for Napier instilling that. I counted only 4-5 penalties the first half and may have missed some in the second but thought there was around 10 for the whole night, which is not bad considering the number of opportunities for them were doubled vs a real game. I can live with 5 penalties per game if that's where we are. Discipline. As a team, I noticed improved tackling and guys swarming to the ball.
This is AR's team and he (and everyone around now) knows it. There were reports through spring that he struggled with consistency(and he still might). One throw would be an NFL type throw, the next throw would be way off. It seemed to me while watching live, that was Jack Miller instead. AR looked comfortable, looked away safeties, well placed throws(WELCOME BACK QUICK SLANTS!), and did so with being "aggressive" with a tempo on offense I cant remember seeing recently. When the tempo slowed he made good reads, was still quick and decisive with his throws, and I don't know if its always been him, but what a different feel regarding his "internal clock", it seems like Napier has improved that in him. This offense seems more quick/aggressive than we have seen in a while. Napier loves the quick out route/WR screen. Miller with time is dangerous, then throws into triple coverage. As the game went on, it seemed he regressed a little. AR needs to stay healthy, Miller is the clear #2 as Del Rio was short hopping throws, but is athletic and a good runner, Kitna was meh as you would expect a 4th-5th stringer to be. Think AR was 18/24 (75%) for 207yards and 2 passing TD's, no telling how many rushing yards he could have added, but had 1 (or 2 TD's) rushing.
Not sure why we have taught the OL to freeze on a suspected offsides call, never been a fan of that. Anyone know why they teach that in football? The OL/DL were bunching up quite a bit, not sure if thats a bad thing for running lanes or a good thing for pass blocking. Hard to tell anything from them other than rushing plays seeing as how if they sneezed on AR he was ruled down.
Trent Whittemore is Mr. Automatic, got in his reps and let some younger guys get in. Fraziars looks to be coming along nice, good, because he needs to in a big way. Dae Dae with some flashes early, and then no catches the rest of the night? I did not see Fenley at WR until late in the game when Kitna's deep ball was short and intercepted by Jalen Kimber. A few walk-ons and every scholarship WR but one played last night...…..Marcus Burke (writing is on the wall, IMO). Shorter is still shorter, not the best hands but long and rangy arms, 1 or 2 throws were not his fault.
Lorenzo Lingard has such quick feet, he reminded me of a bigger Jeff Demps. I know he is straight line fast, but my first time seeing him in person with significant action. I think he pulled a hammy and thats when they changed things up with Montrell. Demarkus Bowman is not afraid of contact. He looked good last night, I believe he played the entire game as orange RB1. Bowman showed his receiving skills as well catching balls out of the backfield and splitting out wide pre snap, for WR screens. BTW, there were quite a lot of screens last night, right? Montrell subbed in for Bowman at times, he is shifty and a tough "up high" runner, glad we added him. Nayquan Wright received a leadership award at halftime (in pads) but did not play last night. That seems to bode well for him sticking around.
Derek Wingo is one of those "cerebral" players of the game and has added some upper body weight. He showed great patience and quickness to make the tackle on the stretch play vs Miller. Diwun Black has some crazy length to his arms. He is a freak and nearly had (probably) another pick 6. Scooby Williams, Derek Wingo and Diwun black will be damn good trio next year(throw in Shemar getting early time) when Ventrell moves on. Speaking of Ventrell, he was plugging running lanes all night, kid has a nose for the ball.
Jaydon Hill was all over the place, Kimber and McMillon had the INT's, Marshall was solid, but i did not see or hear Helm's name so he must've been out with and injury?
Nice to hear some new names called last night making plays...Princely on several occasions made plays, Summerall (who looked to have enjoyed himself), Jordan Young making big tackles, there was an Ethan Pouncey sighting, Kamar is still a big hitter...last but certainly not least - Noah Keeter ladies and gentlemen!
Who had Westin, Keeter, and Montrell with 1st half TD’s on their bingo board?
47 and 52 yard field goals by Adam Mihalek - impressive leg for never hearing his name.
Band location - can we just keep them there where the visitor section is? lol.
They announced 45,000 attendance for a Thursday night approaching Easter weekend, which was 15,000 more than FSU's Saturday scrimmage last week.
Here is a condensed youtube version in case anyone hasn't watched the game...
