Malik Davis Out With Broken Foot

With Davis out, along with the transfer of Adarius Lemons, the Gators are down to four scholarship tailbacks — Jordan Scarlett, Lamical Perine and true freshmen Dameon Pierce and Iverson Clement, who has been helping out in the injury-depleted defensive secondary.

Does Lemons now think that he was premature in quitting the team?

It may be Pierce's opportunity for more playing time.

That sucks as he is probably our best back when 100%.

He was last year before the ACL vs UGly.

This year, it's without a doubt Pierce, and we haven't really seen Clement turned loose yet.
For sure, it's not Scarlett though...
=====

On offense, iG started this season saying that Perine and Pierce should be the 2 primary RB's, with the other 4 getting carries in the committee while adjusting the # of carries from game to game, depending on performance. That might actually finally happen in game #4. Better late than never I guess....

BTW, Malik Davis got a broken bone in his foot vs CSU and will be out for an extended period, but hopefully not for the entire season. Jus-damn!
It didn't really show on the X-ray, but it did on the MRI, so it's likely not to bad of a break. Just a crack maybe???

Why a committee at RB? Because they are already down to Perine, Pierce, Scarlett, and maybe Iverson, when he's not needed as a safety.

Where have you been dude? He's already been lighting up the field, every time they put him in the game anyway....

14 for 162, 11.6 ypc, L-68 for a TD.
Take out his long run and it's still 7.2 ypc.

Not sure what to think of him (Pierce) yet but Scarlett doesn't seem to be up to speed yet from his time off. Its easy to shine in garbage time or a play here and there. Perine always runs hard when he gets his chance.

Get a clue for a change...

Pierce- 14 for 162 yds, 11.6 ypc, L-68 TD
Take out his long run and it's 13 for 94, 7.2 ypc, 0 TD's

Perine - 13 for 99 yds, 7.6 ypc, 0 TD
Take out his long run and it's 12 for 76 yds, 6.3 ypc, 0 TD's

Scarlett - 19 for 105, 5.5 ypc, L-30 TD
Take out his long run and it's 18 for 75, 4.2 ypc, 0 TD's

Franks - 23 for 103 yds, 4.5 ypc, 0 TD
Take out his long run and it's 22 for 82 yds, 3.7 ypc, 0 TD"s

The QB is suppose to pass effectively (53%) and manage the game.
He is clueless reading the defense, so he runs the ball himself.
He runs at a 3.7 ypc rate with the one long run of 21 yds to boost the ypc a bit.

But hey, he gives them 'the Best chance to win now' so Dan is sticking with him after 3 games, just like the McNuss brain-trust did for 8 games last season. BTW, where did that get them (4-7) and where is the McNuss brain-trust now?

The worst passer (53%) is the starting QB.
The 2 worst YPC runners have 42 runs, while the 2 best YPC runners have 27 runs.
No wonder they are 0-1 SEC already, with a possible 0-2 right around the corner...

I know sometimes the reason 1 running back is in the game over another is their ability to pass block, especially picking up blitzes. I don't know if Scarlett is better than the others in that aspect, but he has definitely dropped some passes and doesn't seem to run the ball as well as Perine & Pierce.
P.S. edit - I just read on another board that during his press conference today Coach Mullen said Pierce is earning more touches, but he's still got to get better at route running and pass blocking. So there you go.

True but you see many part time stars that don't look nearly as great when they become the starter. As a runner Scarlett used to be better than Perine but I am not sure if he is anymore. Scarlett must have learned to block this season finally because he was pretty bad at it in 2016.

As little as Franks passes, and as often as he keeps the ball and runs, why should the RB blocking even be a consideration?

However, Pierce was a good receiver in HS, and the way he plays on the Gator ST's, leads me to believe that he's not afraid to throw a crushing block when it's called for. o_O
But hey, see for yourself. Notice several of his runs look just like the one he had vs CSU.

=============

Receiving:

Scarlett - 4 for 48 yds, 12.0 yds/rec, L-30, 0 TD's plus drops.
Take out the long and it's 3 for 12 yds, 4.0 yds/rec (dink & dunk junk)

Toney - 3 for 37 yds, 12.3 yds/rec, L-19 yds, 0 TD
Take out the long and it's 2 for 18 yds, 9 yds/rec

Davis - 3 for 33 yds, 11 yds/rec, L-19, 0 TD
Take out he longe and it's 2 for 14 yds, 7.0 yds/rec

Perine - 1 for 18 yds, 0 TD --- 18.0 yds/rec, only targeted once.

Pierce - Zero targets, but an excellent receiver in HS.

PS

When Clement gets a real chance, some are going to be surprised by how good he is.
Trivia -- Franco Harris likes his playing style.

I was just posting what Coach Mullen said at his press conference. I am one who would definitely like to see Pierce more, though. When he's had opportunities, he's looked great. Mullen didn't criticize his receiving ability, it was his route running. Maybe the reason he hasn't caught any passes is that he ran the wrong route and wasn't where he was supposed to be when the QB looked. Don't know. Pass blocking is as much about the mental awareness of picking up a blizter or reacting to a missed block by a lineman as it is about being able to throw a good block. Whatever it is, the coach says he's earned the right to more PT, but needs to improve in those 2 areas. I don't watch game replays, so am in no position to criticize the coach. I agree with you that Franks runs too much, although sometimes he's had little choice.

Not you ocala, it's Dan and/or others that have annoyed me so far.

Both Franks and Scarlett apparently give them 'The Best Chance To Win Now'....
(my own lyin' eyes are just about killin' me)

Insta I’ve watched his every carry. So explain why he’s not getting more touches? Overall he’s better than the other two by the way he hits the holes, so I don’t get it.

Because as impressive as Pierce has been, his carries have come against the 2nd and 3rd string late in the 4th quarters against an FCS team and another team that’s 1-2. Besides that there’s more to running back than just carrying the ball. He needs to know all the protections as well as the linemen, he has to know when to release on pass patterns, etc. I promise the coaches aren’t keeping him on the bench for shits and giggles. His time will come.

He doesn’t know the offense yet and all the protections and blitz pickups, etc.

I just watch the game film (more than once) and look at the results for each RB.
All have good and bad traits as of today, nobody is perfect.
It's the overall results that interest me on who gets the most carries. o_O

RB's
1. Run the ball for good yards and don't put it on the carpet.

2. Pass block and/or block for the others ball carriers.
3. Run the correct route, get open, catch the damn ball, and YAC.
In that order imoho.

To me, Perine and Pierce are the best at all three combined, and especially at #1.
We shall see as the season progresses...

Who you do it against is also important, but for some reason, you never seem to take that into account.

Now, cue the poetry.

Dude can you ever not be a total douche bag and say something new. Geez

That's the hardest thing for a new RB to pick up. Kid is a beast though...love the way that he's running the ball. If he get's that figured out he'll kill it.

Yeah, 11.6 ypc is decent for a true Fr, especially when you consider that rsJr ALL WORLD Scarlett is running for 5.5 ypc against the same opponents, but of course, who you get your yards against only matters when it comes to selected 'in' group guys...

Scarlett- Rushing 19 for 105 yds, 5.5 ypc, L-30 (TD)
Pierce - Rushing 14 for 162 yds, 11.6 ypc, L-68 (TD)

Scarlett - Receiving - 4 for 48 yds, 12.0 yds/rec, L-30, 0 TD's
Perine - Receiving - 1 for 18 yds, 18.0 yds/rec, L-18, 0 TD's

Pierce - Receiving - No targets.in 2018.
HS Stats - 45 for 571 yds, 12.7 yds/rec, L-74, 2 TD's
