All a trademark does is protect a product or business name from infringement. So no Chinese clothing companies can use Ivanka’s trade name on a dress.
Patents - of which there are design and utility - protect a specific design of a product or a product that achieves a certain level of novelty for an application. Utility patents are pretty valuable because they cover an application, design patents can usually be worked around because they are so specific. For the period they are valid you can have a monopoly on a certain application for Utility patents, charging royalties to anyone who makes the product.
Trademarks are much, much less valuable. The value they protect is in the Brand…and the Brand is built with time, money and investment. Trademarks don’t have the same revenue-generating potential in most cases.
