The idea is to have a starting point. If we don't even have a starting point what are rankings in week 5 going to be based off of? There would be even more guesswork than there is now. Right now teams start of the season based on things like how they finished the year before, returning starters, schedule, possible impact recruits, etc. It isn't perfect but at least it's logical. If we don't have a poll until week 5 the things people complain about (mostly subjectivity) gets worse.

Polls matter to fans when their team is #1...not so much when their team is #26. The playoff system still shows bias to the Power 5 regardless the ranking.
Win your conference and you're still gonna leap frog a mid-major who's ranked in the top 10. Unless said mid-major threatens to sue their asses and then they'll probably sneak in. ijs
