Missouri State Sen. Mike Moon defended child marriage on Tuesday, touting the apparently successful marriage of people he knows who got married when they were 12.

The Republican made the comments during a debate on a bill he introduced that would ban gender-affirming care for transgender youth in the state.

Video of the exchange showed Democratic state Rep. Peter Meredith confronting Moon over past comments he made about parents' rights to make decisions concerning their own children.

"You voted 'no' on making it illegal for kids to be married to adults at the age of 12 if their parents consented to it," Meredith told Moon. "You said actually that should be the law because it's the parents' right and the kid's right to decide what's best for them. To be raped by an adult."

The education board filed a motion to dismiss the civil lawsuit, challenging the constitutionality of opening a temporary window to sue, no matter how long ago abuse occurred.

A three-judge panel ruled 2-1 in the board’s favor.

In July 2022 a Democrat-majority Supreme Court approved a request that would have allowed the case involving Gaston County to come before them, skipping the Court of Appeals. But the Republican-majority justices in place after last fall’s election rescinded that order.

The move sent the case to the Court of Appeals, which will draw out the process to determine whether the section of the law is constitutional, attorneys involved said in interviews.

“We were profoundly disappointed,” said Katie Clary, a Charlotte attorney who is working with Mingo on four related cases.

Imagine the children who have been sexually abused, living in shame and silence for decades, Clary said. Along the way, the General Assembly recognized the harm done to them and gave them power to seek recourse against their abusers and those who enabled them, she said.

Multiple images of nude underage girls were found on an email account linked to billionaire banker T. Denny Sanford, according to affidavits released Thursday.

Sanford, the richest man in South Dakota with connections to several powerful officials, was under investigation for three years for accessing and possessing child pornography. No charges were filed in South Dakota after the investigation concluded in May 2022.

Sanford had waged a legal battle for a year to keep the affidavits sealed, despite state law stating they should be released once a decision not to charge him had been made. But on April 6, the South Dakota Supreme Court upheld a 2022 circuit court ruling that the probable cause documents be released. Sanford had another chance to appeal that decision, but did not.


During the investigation three images of nude underage females, which were repeated in 36 total files, were discovered. The photos show the girls’ bare breasts and vaginas, search warrants said. Their ages were estimated at between 8-12 years old, 10-15 years old, and 12-15 years old, according to an affidavit prepared by South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation Agent Jeff Kollars, who has experience and training in sexual exploitation cases. In 2018, he was nominated for a national award for his work by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

Kollars filed the first affidavit in the Sanford investigation on Dec. 9, 2019, and four more on March 12, 2020.

A failed Republican congressional candidate allied with prominent Stop The Steal conspiracy theorists has admitted to fabricating a story about child sex trafficking to gain attention for his campaign.

Ryan Dark White, who ran a longshot Senate bid in Maryland under the name Jon McGreevey and sometimes referred to himself as the “Patriot Whistleblower,” caused a furor last year when he described lurid acts of child abuse that he allegedly witnessed while working in an adult bookstore. White’s claims of child trafficking made him a sympathetic figure on the far right, where he had made similar and baseless allegations against Mike Pence and Chief Justice John Roberts following Trump’s 2022 election loss.

But the adult bookstore claims were a lie, White admitted this month.

“On April 9th, 2022, I went to work at The Mistress,” White wrote in a public apology, released by police on Thursday. “When I arrived at work, I noticed a young girl and elderly male in the store near the ATM. I immediately recognized this as an opportunity to potentially obtain traction for my political career as I was running for US Senate.”

A former employee of Rudy Giuliani said in a new lawsuit filed Monday that he told her he was attracted to another woman who worked for him who was 20-years-old, and that he had kissed her on the lips.

Noelle Dunphy, who says she worked for Giuliani for two years, filed a civil lawsuit against him in Manhattan on Monday, accusing him of rape and of forcing her to engage in sexual acts as part of her job. Dunphy claimed Giuliani demanded she perform oral sex while he made calls on speaker phone, including to then-President Donald Trump.

The lawsuit said that during the two years Dunphy worked for Giuliani, starting in January 2019, while he was Trump's lawyer, Giuliani often made crude comments about women as well as racist and homophobic remarks.

A Republican Texas state lawmaker who once proposed banning children from attending drag shows to supposedly shield them from being groomed for abuse has resigned after he was found to have engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with a 19-year-old intern.

Bryan Slaton, 45, resigned on Monday while facing mounting calls from the state’s Republican party and conservative groups to step down. A state house investigation last week determined that he supplied alcohol to the intern and another young staffer, had sex with the intern after she had become intoxicated, and later showed her a threatening email while saying everything would be fine if she kept quiet about the encounter.

House investigators noted as well that Slaton had asked a fellow lawmaker to keep his behavior secret.

The chairperson of the investigation panel, Texas state representative Andrew Murr, said he still planned to call for a vote to expel Slaton because he remains an officer of the legislature until a successor is elected and sworn in.
