When the game is tied with seconds left, you do not put your smallest, worst defender on their best scorer.
And when your team does not shoot threes very well, and you are down by two, you do not draw up a three point shot in the final seconds.
I did not understand the play for 3 at the end. Did he suddenly think they would start falling? FSU left us open all night and we still couldn't hit them.

FSU will need to improve their defense and get some type of production down low. Good shooting teams are going to light you guys up. Get better there and you have a chance to make the dance.
It took a while for Coach Ham to understand that you guys couldn't hit them. Your guards kept beating us off the dribble and getting easy layups. Ham finally switched to zone and said screw it. I have never seen a team not even attempt to cover 3 point shooters like we did tonight. It was very strange.

No doubt it seems to be a smart move now. But our guards just sat back probably 10 feet away on most of those 3's. It was a weird strategy because at the end all you needed to hit was one. We'll get rolled in the ACC on a regular basis if we don't cover the three.

I'm not sure why Florida didn't go inside more because it was there but I'll take it.
IMO the 3-point shot should've been pulled from play chart by at least midway through the 2nd. It must be falling in practice. White was a coach I'd been keeping an eye on as a replacement for Ham. You guys got him first.

Yeah but how often is Leonard going to sit back in a Zone and let people shoot uncontested 3 pointers in the ACC. Leonard isn't stupid. Man to Man is our main defense. Problem is against UF they kept getting dribble penetration for easy layups. So Leonard chose to go to a Zone to stop the penetration and let UF have the 3 point shot which they couldn't make but 16% of the time. t think the Quickness of UF's guards is as much or more than most of the ACC teams we play other than Miami. We won't strategically give up uncontested 3 pointers when ACC play starts up.
Well, just about everybody in the ACC can shoot the 3 point shot. So if we can't contain Dribble Penetration we're in big trouble defensively in the ACC. Because then you have to rotate and they can get either an easy layup or an uncontested 3 pointer depending on who rotates. It also leaves you vulnerable to offensive rebounds too. And ACC teams tend to make the 3 Pointer 35-40% of the time.

JMOHO, but Hayes has a better motor, better shooting skills, and way more 'long term potential' than the USF xfer has. He also seem to have a better 'team' attitude.
Egbunu seems to me to have gotten lazy and his FT's have also gone in the dumpster.
The Teams 'Free Throw Percentage' still STINKS on ICE!!!!

White made a lot of coaching blunders at the end of the game, imo.
Putting an undersized poor defender on FSU's best player, with seconds to go the game tied was one such blunder.
Not calling a time out and setting up a good two point play with seconds to go was another one.
MJ, neither of us really 'knows' what defense, or what final play that the coach called.
A timeout at the end gives their defense time to set up to counter whatever is thrown at them. IF the players don't do their jobs or if they miss the shot (which he did) then it doesn't matter what was called. If that 3 had fallen, then White would be a genius.
All we know is what we saw the players do,,,, or failed to execute.
And go review what BillyD did in his first season at UF, before getting down on White.
I'm personally very happy that Coach White is the new head coach, and I'm willing to give him 2-3 years to build and develop his team. I think that he and his chosen staff are the right guys for the job, until and unless they prove otherwise over time....

Actually we do know that. But only if we listen to his post game comments, or read about them in the paper. He told us exactly what he was thinking.
He purposefully left the undersized and poor defender Hill as the primary defender for FSU's best player. The reason? He did not want to take a guy off the bench that might not be warmed up? WHAT....??
And he said he purposefully did not call a time out. Because he did not want to give FSU time to set a defense. But in not doing so, he all but guaranteed we would need a three point shot, when we had not been hitting them all night. Not to even mention it was only a two point game.
Both of those decisions were head scratches, to say the least.

He seems smart. And driven. But I am not impressed with his coaching thus far, nor am I impressed with his recruiting.
But he does get the benefit of the doubt for some period of time.
