So I came back this week primarily to post this information I got from friends at Ole Miss. As many recall, I have some ties to the Ole Miss program, so here's what I got updated to today around 4pmCST:
Tunsil will most likely not play this weekend. Still dealing with used car, a crazy step father, and NCAA issues. The prevailing thought in Oxford is that he will miss 6 games in total before being cleared to play again.
Ole Miss had a key injury to a Senior starting guard against Alabama, who is out, and will be starting 3 freshman offensive lineman (sound familiar) against us on Saturday as of now.
They only have four Offensive tackles capable of playing right now on their roster
Starting Safety (and a real good one) Tony Conner out of South Panola is out with injuries. That's big to their defense as they lack experienced depth in the secondary.
The Ole Miss coaches have been talking all week about how good Florida is, and how many pure athletes we have.
They really fear Will Grier because of his scrambling and running ability. Ole Miss struggles with mobile QB's on defense.
Ole Miss's strength's include:
Chad Kelly; to date he has been excellent under pressure in their opinion. That said, not sure how excellent he was under pressure against Alabama..........sometimes its better to be lucky than good. In addition, outside of Bama, that probably really should have beaten Ole Miss, the Rebel Black Bears have not really played anyone as talented as our defense. Should be interesting.
Their WR's are one of the best cores in the nation. Best in the SEC for sure. They are long, tall, fast, and athletic. They will be a handful even against what is arguably the best secondary in the nation. Should be a great match up.
Their D-line is as good as anyone's in the nation. Watch Nkemdiche (Robert, not the LB brother). We will have to double team him or do something creative or he will kill us. That said, the Ole Miss staff thinks Jonathan Bullard is every bit as good as Robert Nkemdiche. By the way, I met Nkemdiche's dad recently, really nice guy, nice family.
Weaknesses:
Their CB's are Shepard and Bridges, and they think they are good but inexperienced.
They like their safeties, but again, their best starting safety is Tony Conner and he is out.
At LB they are small and not very deep
They have a small and decent RB, but nothing special at RB (Walton)
Ole Miss is not a ground and pound consistent offense. They are an opportunistic big play offense. They tend to get their yards and statistics through big plays and runs after the catch. Good tackling, keeping the receivers in front of us, and putting pressure on Kelly will be huge in this game.
Ole Miss is likely not a top 5 team in reality. They lack depth and have a few key injuries. Bama turned the ball over again and again to Ole Miss, and Ole Miss got some freak luck in that game as well. Not taking anything away from them, but they were luck to beat Alabama (though you do make your own luck in life). That said, they are a top 10 to 15 team for sure. I do think that, overall, they are ahead of us right now, but not by as much as some think.
As always, turnovers and mistakes will be key, and we need a few more of those to go our way to win this one IMO.
