Hate to say it kids...but we ain’t playin’...

Yes I’m truly torn to be honest. If it wasn’t such a revenue generating sport that basically funds the entire school then I agree.
I think they will find a way to play just not sure how they are going to do it.

Hopefully baseball and the nba follow through with their current plans to play. If those get up and going we should be good to go. Great news is as we continue to learn more, CDC said that a person under 30 has a better chance of dying from lightning strike than covid. Still hope out there as long as the mortality rates continue to fall.

It's not looking good. If it were treated like the flu then maybe. With all the quarantining it will be impossible.

Well cases are rising. What if during game week 20 players get it?? What about travel for the team for away games?
We knew that cases would rise as we reopened. It's a virus, it aint going anywhere. Hasn't prevented thousands from protesting, and traveling to protest. With all we know now are we still not smart enough how to do this while protecting those most vulnerable?

It’s not just protesters. People aren’t being smart. No it doesn’t appear we are smart enough IMO.

I know it's not just the protesters. People are tired of being locked up and everything being shut down. We will be measuring the unfortunate consequences of that for years. Got to be a way we can return to sports and still protect those most vulnerable. One thing that's not political we can all agree on is we need some sports. Amazing how good for the soul they are.

Don’t disagree but just running different scenarios in my head and sometimes worst case scenarios could make it difficult to play.

The media and so-called "experts" keeps changing the goal line. First it was not enough hospital beds, masks and ventilators. That was addressed and turned out to be a non-issue. Then it was the fact that people were dying in increasing numbers and that had to be mitigated. When the death rate leveled off and started dropping in mid-April, then it was not enough tests being done. Now that there are hundreds of thousands of tests being run every week, of course the number of diagnosed cases are going to increase. But what percentage have few or no symptoms? That's not being reported. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, U.S. Covid-19 deaths for the week ending 5/16 were 8763, week ending 5/23 6647, week ending 5/30 5396, week ending 6/6 3834, week ending 6/13 1943 and week ending 6/20 371. It is a concern, no doubt, but I just think the fact that football is the financial engine that pulls college athletics almost mandates that they have to figure out a way to play games and keep that revenue stream alive. I understand that college administrators have to make decisions to protect the health and safety of their student-athletes, coaches and teachers. And it's a tough spot to be in. But this virus is never going away and at some point we, as a country, just have to simply get back to living life, trust people to use common sense and not accept a "new normal" without the activities that Americans love to participate in and watch.

Unfortunately I’m not sure that people are using common sense.

Americans today have absolutely no patience or ability to sacrifice...good thing it ain’t 1941...

because it's absolute nonsense.

It's like people believe it's some kind of death sentence. The numbers simply don't bare that out. Especially for younger people.

patience? Shutting down the entire economy and trying to force people to stay home for months at a time over something like this deserves no patience. Its ludicrous.

Actually there were very few cases to date reported from the protests. The large majority now are aged 19 to 34 and they get and spread the disease because they pay no attention to the basic CDC guidelines. Bars beaches and events attended just as they were in 2019 so it was inevitable that the incidence of disease is skyrocketing.

That's two cases, one of which is being investigated. Of course there has to be a high number and a low number. And child's death is a tragedy but lets keep some perspective here.
Just sayin’...you think one public university is going to take the risk of playing ball and having even one college student die on their watch because entitled fans can’t live without their football? Not debating the merits of whether it is right or wrong, but sadgator is starting to realize that we’re living in fantasy land if we think this season goes off as anything close to planned...

I understand what you're saying, but money is a huge motivator and if there's any way at all for football to be played it will happen. We're talking billions of dollars at stake. Here's a pretty comprehensive link to a recent ESPN take on the upcoming season.

People die.

How long shall we stay coddled?

until a vaccine is developed in another year?

And then we'll make it mandatory I suppose?

when we finally emerge, what will be left?

I realize that liberals have a severe misunderstanding of how economies actually work, but all those adorable pet project feel good agendas you want to find and push actually need people to work and create wealth.

I'm over it.

Odd how most of the protesters were in the 19-34 range and they avoided large spikes. So if we call football games protest will they too become safer?

I agree with this. No way a school will want to chance it, not in this current political climate.

Do they also close down when someone dies of the seasonal flu?

Deaths from the Black plague? = 75 to 200 Million died.

Deaths from the Spanish Flu? = 500 Million infected, between 17 and 50 Million died.

Deaths from the Red Chinese Kung Flu? = 468,257 deaths worldwide.

The first two were real pandemics, the 3rd is a hoax with a death rate about the same as the seasonal flu. And oh BTW, they didn't close down the world economies for the 1st 2.... o_O

It is beyond all reasonable sensibility that somebody would call this a “hoax” at this point.

sadgator honestly didn’t want to get into the politics of it...for that you can go to the Lounge and Ghost will tell you how to think about it...

But the fact is...we weren’t ready for this (not pointing fingers)...and now we gotta deal with the price for that...

The people who ate beans during the Great Depression and the dudes who stormed Normandy would be weeping for us right now whining about the fact that we can’t sacrifice a season or two of college football and wear some freakin’ masks when we gather (protesters too!). It is shameful what a bunch of wussies we’re become...

you can shoot your enemies at Normandy.

you can go out and find work during the depression.

you can't shoot a virus we don't have a vaccine for and you can't go out and find work when they shut down a roaring economy in the name of saving life's.

It's never happened before.

point fingers? Point them at China. Do you have any idea how long it takes to make a vaccine? Especially against a virus like this? I'm close friends with a biologist and a chemist. There was no timeline to quickly do anything about this once China let it go unfettered.

conspiracy theories aside, this disease is only different than anything else because we DONT have a vaccine for it.

My God the numbers that normal things cause. Common influenza, car accidents, and, of all things, the one that is always high....suicide.

"you don't care about grandparents and small children."

Oh....you mean the same groups that are usually the most likely to die from the flue? Yeah....go figure. Weaker immune systems.

I assume, when you say "not pointing fingers" you mean that you don't want to say you're blaming Trump. Of course, Obama let 1000 people actually die before he declared action when....SARS? was an issue. And we never took action like this. In fact, we've never taken action like this ever. It's unprecedented. But Obama is heralded.

And which one of you said that "well the protesters area that testing for it?" ?

what asinine argument is that? I'm sure they're taking their time to get tests while their looting, pillaging, tearing down monuments, and crammed shoulder-to-shoulder to make a statement.

now on that point, We've increased the amount of tests available (been doing it the whole time) so yeah....imagine that....the more people you test, the more numbers will swing towards positive test results.

If 456 people test positive for COVID-19 and 3 of them die, you realize that's absurdly low, right?

And at least a week ago, 45% of all fatalities in the US were in nursing homes.

again, people that are of an age range that usually don't handle infection well are in close quarters and die.

there are always outliers to everything. But to try and pretend that this virus is so dangerous that "for the common good" we must shut down every aspect of normal life is bizarre to me.

place as much value on human life as you'd like, but when the money train in this country collapses, you'll see what happens to your social policies.

for any of you liberals that need a history reminder, all the socio-economic reforms that FDR pushes through in 1933-35 did basically nothing to fix (It was a stop-gap at best) the economy. The influx of Production needed to fund the Second World War brought us out of the Depression.

If you don't see the issue here, then I'm not sure what to tell you.

Just have anyone associated with the game sign a waiver. Want to play...sign waiver, want to be a fan in the stands...sign waiver, film crew, referees, ball boys. Everyone. I’m sure there will be enough to play and fill the stands. PLAY BALL

- Do we allow 19-34 range only to attend the game?
- Mostly locals protested in their respective areas. Went home after said protest. Did not stay in huge groups while sleeping and eating.

- A protest for the most part spanned over a 2 week period. Football spans all through September, October, and November...then bowl season.

I'm not saying the season should be shut down. I'm just saying you have to think of the logistics of 130 or so people travelling together, lodging together, eating together. Also the factor of the crowd ranging from 5,000 to 100,000 or whatever. Over 300 different college teams (if you count all the way to the NAIA level) with over 100 players/staff.

I hope they find a way to play. I really do. However a football season vs a protest season is not comparable.

Did you really think this would not get political?

None of this should be political
It all should be science

This is NOT the flu, just stop

The one thing that may get football is it is played outdoors. Outdoor transmission is scientifically less than indoor. All the players should wear shield face masks

that makes it possible without an NBA sealed bubble, but as Florida becomes the epicenter it seems the right thing to do to close the casinos again, and buckle up. We will get some treatments even before a vaccine but allowing Covid to surpass cancer as a killer in this country has been awful

I was responding to his post that the protesters were not responsible for the spike in cases. That's absolutely false. I live in DC, I watched these protest firsthand. They were crowded together no different than being at a bar or football stadium....and no...not all had masks. And the ones who did routinely pulled them down so the could shout things...to say that has had nothing to do with the increases is to be so biased you are unable to see the truth.
