I believe the key to having "peace" is to have willing participants. Europe, Japan, you had that, Vietnam, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, not so much.

Subjugated = willing for Japan and Germany. SK should have been the model for Vietnam but Nixon botched it with not securing a real peace. Congress played a role but there was no tripwire.

Iraq and Afghanistan should have been forcibly secularized. We could have 1.5 generations of limp wristed boys in those countries by now. We can indoctrinate our youth with perversity but cant seem to do anything with a conquered foe?

I am out on Nation building. Think of the money, and more importantly the lives that were lost to achieve so little. Trump is spot on here. If you have to fight...fight with every ounce of ability you can, and win decisively. Or do not fight.
