Saban best asst coach to this point is Kirby Smart. Fact. He made it to the national championship game in only his second year as a head coach and won the SEC and the Rose Bowl that year.

Pruitt was hired by Bama in December of 2015. The 2015 NC game was in January of 2016.
It was a big story at the time, Saban figured out how to have his current and future DC on staff at the same time for the playoffs and NC game.

Player development trumps recruiting every single time. It's actually why Bama lost the NC this year: Locksley and Lupoi are two of the best recruiters in the country, but they aren't elite coordinators.
