The play was one of the most electric of a Saturday night chocked full of energy at The Swamp.
With 30 seconds remaining in the first half, Florida quarterback Will Grier dropped and fired a perfect pass to fellow redshirt freshman C’yontai Lewis, who split the seam of the New Mexico State secondary for a 32-yard score, the Gators’ fifth touchdown of the opening half of what turned into a rousing 61-13 victory for the boistrous and celebrating sellout crowd.
The Grier-to-Lewis hook-up was one of eight touchdowns for Jim McElwain’s offense, accounted for a mere fraction of the team’s 606 yards and was a prime example of the new staff’s willingness to utilize all its weapons. Lewis was one of three tight ends who combined for seven receptions and a pair of touchdowns. Compare that to the 16 catches and two TDs for Florida tight ends alllast season.
Yet, what struck McElwain most about the play had nothing to do with the thrower or catcher...
