Gator Softball

We've played a really tough schedule. I still believe this will help us in the back half of the season.
Tim Walton always has us playing a brutal pre-conference schedule. But softball is all about pitching and we just don't have the ace we've always had to carry the load in big games. If he gets this team to the World Series it will be his best coaching job ever, IMO.

Rylee Trlicek pitched a complete game 3-hitter as the Gators opened their SEC season with a 6-0 win over Auburn. Trlicek improves to 8-2 getting 13 ground outs, 3 K's and only 1 walk, while the Gators go to 19-4 on the year. UF had 8 hits, including 2 each from Hannah Adams and Cheyenne Lindsay, who also 2 RBI's. Adams, Lindaman & Reynoso had an RBI each.

Gator softball improved to 20-4, 2-0 in the SEC with a thrilling 2-1, 11 inning win over Auburn tonight. It was a pitcher's duel between Natalie Lugo and Samantha Yarbrough, who battled into the 10th, before Katie Chronister came in to relieve Lugo (147 pitches) after she walked the leadoff batter. After giving up a single to the first batter she faced, Chronister got out of the jam and got out of another jam in the 11th after a leadoff walk and an error on our 3rd baseman. Auburn changed pitcher for the bottom of the 11th after their pitcher was over 170 pitches. Cheyenne Lindsay led off with an infield single and a throwing error put her on 2nd. Julia Cottrill followed with a single, then Sophia Reynoso was safe on a n error trying a sacrifice bunt. Hannah Adams then lined a single into the gap for the walkoff win. Auburn had taken a 1-0 lead in the 4th on a walk, hit batter and 2-out single. Florida tied it in the bottom of the 6th on a 2-out single from Cheyenne Lindsay after Charla Echols and Cottrill had singled. Both teams had ample chances to score more, but clutch pitching on both sides kept the game tied until the 11th. Auburn only had 5 hits on the game, Florida had 12, with Cottrill, Lindsay and Jamie Hoover getting 3 each.

Florida softball scored 8 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, as the first 9 batters reached base with 7 singles and 2 walks, as the Gators coasted to an 11-0, 5 inning run rule sweep of Auburn. Florida had 13 hits on the day, with Cheyenne Lindsay going 3-3 and 10 other Gators getting a hit each. Freshman Rylee Trlicek pitched her 2nd shutout of the weekend, improving her record to 9-2, as the Gators go to 21-4, 3-0 in the SEC.

The Gators have a tough week ahead, facing 7-5 Penn Tuesday night, 17-5 #9 Florida State Wednesday night, and then hosting a 3-game series over the weekend against 17-5 Baylor. Baylor opened the season by beating Auburn 8-0, has wins over ranked Minnesota and ranked Arkansas and has split 2 games with FSU.

Pitching stepped up this weekend, maybe Trilicek can become the ace we are looking for.

Why have the Gator bats made such a big improvement this season?
This could have something to do with the answer?

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For only the 2nd time in program history, a trio of Gators have earned SEC Player, Pitcher and Freshman of the Week at the same time after going 4-0 last week.

Sophomore Cheyenne Lindsey was tabbed SEC Co-Player of the Week, freshman Rylee Trlicek earned SEC Pitcher of the Week and Julia Cottrill was picked as SEC Freshman of the Week after the Gators picked up a midweek win over FGCU and swept Auburn during SEC Opening Weekend.

The only other time that Florida players earned all three awards at the same time was April 27, 2015 when Kelsey Stewart (Player), Lauren Haeger (Pitcher) and Nicole DeWitt (Freshman) earned the awards. (that's pretty good company to be keeping) ;)

UF beat FSU 5-2 Wednesday night on SEC+ behind 2 run homers from Charla Echols & Kendyl Lindaman and an RBI single from Cheyenne Lindsay. As is becoming the pattern, Tim Walton used 3 pitchers to limit the Noles to 2 hits on the night. Rylee Trlicek pitched the first 4 innings where FSU got their runs, Katie Chronister threw the 5th and Natlie Lugo recorded her 6th save on the year throwing the 6th & 7th innings. Gators move to 23-4 on the year and have a weekend home series against 19-5 Baylor.
