Gator Softball

Gator softball won their season opener with a 4-1 win over a pretty good Illinois State team. Natalie Lugo pitched the entire game, getting 11 strikeouts. Florida got all their runs in the 2nd innings, scoring them all with 2 outs on a bases loaded HBP from Hannah Adams, a walk to Kendyl Lindaman and a double from newcomer Charla Echols. UF plays a tough set of back-to-back games Saturday starting at 11:30 AM against Fresno St., followed by a game against Michigan.

My 14 year old daughter follows a lot of the girls and Coach Walton on Instagram. She is so excited softball is finally here.

UF softball just beat previously unbeaten Fresno St. 6-4 in their 1st game Saturday 6-4. Charla Echols went 3-4 with 3 RBI's and Cheyenne Lindsay went 3-3 with 2 RBI's, including the 1st gator HR of the season. Freshman Rylee Trlicke pitched the first 3 innings and gave up 3 runs, Elizabeth Hightower threw 3 innings and gave up only a solo HR. Natalie Lugo came into the game in the bottom of the 7th with 2 on and nobody out and saved the game. Looks like this year is going to be pitching by committee and will require the team to score more runs than in the recent past.

Junior Danielle Romanello entered the transfer portal Jan. 8, I guess seeing that she wasn't going to get much more playing time than she had her first 2 years. Too bad because her lifelong dream, coming from St. Pete, was to play softball for UF. Best of luck to her.

Feels like we are fairly young. I'm thinking they will continue to improve as the season progresses. Glad they are playing good competition to start the season.

UF softball got run-ruled by Michigan 11-2 in 6 innings. The defense was shaky behind the poor pitching, committing 3 errors and had a couple of other plays that could have been ruled errors. Natalie Lugo gave up 5 runs in the 1st inning, after retiring the first 2 batters. Dani Farley, Katie Chronister and Elizabeth Hightower weren't any better in relief. This looks like the first year of the Tim Walton era that we haven't had a true ace/stud pitcher. Some years we had two. Walton's weakest team, his very first in 2006, finished 43-25 and had senior Stacey Stevens and sophomore Stacey Nelson. Women's softball is all about pitching and if you aren't gettin' it done consistently in the circle, the team's not going to fare very well. I know this is a looong season and they've just played 3 games, Coach Walton's early comments about this team seems to hint that he knows we don't have the go-to pitcher we're used to seeing. And losing Jen Rocha as the pitching coach and pitch caller doesn't help either. She's the best in the country at what she does.

Gator softball improved to 4-1 with a 6-1 win over USF. Jordan Roberts and Charla Echols had 2-run homers, while Jade Caraway and Jordan Mathhews each had an RBI. Natalie Lugo had a no-hitter through 5.2 innings, but was taken out after giving up a solo HR and double with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th. After Katie Chronister walked the only batter she faced, Rylee Trlicek came in to record the final 4 outs and get a save. As soon as the 5th game today is posted into the accumulative stats, I'll post some info. on how the team stands after the first weekend.

The Gators' next game is Tuesday night against the USA softball national team, followed by a game Wednesday hosting UNF. Next weekend they play North Dakota State & Longwood Friday, North Dakota State & Longwood again on Saturday and then SE Louisiana & FAMU on Sunday. The following week they host Jacksonville University on Wednesday before heading to Palm Springs, California for tough games against Arizona, Northwestern, Arizona State, UCLA & Nebraska.

After the first 5 games, UF softball is 4-1, hitting .295 as a team, with a staff ERA of 3.50. On the pitching side, Natalie Lugo has thrown 14.2 innings with a 2.86 ERA, 2-1 record, 1 save, 12 hits, 5 walks 16 K's. Rylee Trlicek has thrown 9.1 innings with a 2.25 ERA, 1-0 record, 1 save, 8 hits, 1 walk, 9 K's. Sophomores Elizabeth Hightower & Dani Farley have thrown 7.2 innings combined, giving up 9 hits, 6 walks, 8 K's and 7 runs. Senior Katie Chronister has faced 3 batters in 2 appearances, got 1 out, walked 1 and gave up a hit.

Great pitching can somewhat cover for poor hitting.

Great hitting can somewhat cover for poor pitching.

As can suffocating defense behind the pitchers.

But it takes pretty good in all 3 if you want to make the long haul to championships. o_O

It's a long season, but it seems to me that this team is closer to having that kind of balance than last years version was. So, GoooooooGATORS! :)

UF softball beat UNF 10-2 in 5 innings tonight to improve to 5-1. Freshman Rylee Trlicke pitched the 1st 2 innings to get the win (2-0), while sophomore Elizabeth Hightower threw the 4th & 5th innings. Jordan Roberts got her 4th HR of the season with a 3-run blast in the 1st inning, giving her 9 RBI for the year. Freshman Julia Cottrill went 3-3 with 2 RBI to raise her batting average to .357. Gators host 6 games in 3 days this weekend.

nobody has mentioned that last night we played Team USA and would have BEAT THEIR ASSES if not for that garbage softball rule of allowing pitchers back into the game after they had been retired. Team USA's coach had to go and put all of his starters back into the game with only 1 out in the bottom of the 7th up by 5-3 with runners on 2nd and 3rd base and his backup pitchers completely collapsing for the Florida bats. Without putting that 30 year old starting pitcher back in, something that can't happen in baseball rules, Team USA would have fallen to a young Florida team that played as many as 7 freshman at one point in time on the field.

That's softball rules. No complaints. Their Starting pitcher, Monica Abbott, is 34 and is probably the best softball pitcher ever. No problem with the rules of the game and proud of the way our kids hung in there. Not sure yet how good our team is this year. The bats and defense are there. It all depends on whether or not our pitching can hold up against quality teams.

UF softball improved to 7-1 today with a 5-0 win over North Dakota State and a 9-0 win over Longwood. . In the first game Rylee Trlicek ran her record to 3-0, throwing 6.1 innings, giving up 4 hits, 0 walks and 2 K's, lowering her ERA to 1.80. Charla Echols had 2 hits and 2 RBI, Cheyenne Lindsay and Kendyl Lindaman had 2 hits and an RBI each. In game 2, Natalie Lugo threw 3 innings, giving up o hits and 2 walks, Dani Farley pitched the ginal 2 innings of the run rule game, giving up 2 hits and a walk. Charla Echols blasted 2 HR's with 5 RBI's, Sophia Reynoso had 2 hits and 2 RBI's, while Lindeman had 2 hits. The Gators play the same 2 teams tomorrow staring at 11:30 AM.

UF softball pitchers tossed their 3rd & 4th consecutive shutouts today. Natalie Lugo threw a 2 hitter in beating North Dakota State 1-0 in Game 1 today. Hannah Adams got a game-ending 2 out RBI single in the bottom of the 7th for the win. In Game 2, Elizabeth Hightower struck out 8 and only gave up 1 hit in a 5-inning 11-0 run rule game. Baylee Goddard had 2 hits, including a 3-run HR, while Jordan Roberts had a hit and 2 RBI. Gators are now 9-1, with games Sunday vs. SE Louisiana and Florida A&M.

Gator softball improved to 11-1 today with a 13-1 run-rule win over SE Louisiana and a 2-1 win over 0-10 Florida A & M. While the Gators' record is impressive, they've only played 1 game against a ranked opponent so far and got run-ruled. Charla Echols has proven to be a big time hitter. The sophomore Michigan St. transfer had bee awesome in her first 11 games, hitting .500. Hannah Adams at 2nd base and leadoff hitter has been excellent and there have been bright spots from Cheyenne Lindsay, Kendyl Lindaman, Jade Carraway and Julia Cottrill. Freshman pitcher Rylee Trlicek is going to be a good one it appears, but time will tell how she will hold up this year against elite teams.

The true testing begins this weekend because after a Wednesday game hosting Jacksonville, UF goes to Palm Springs, California to play Arizona & Northwestern Friday, Arizona St. & UCLA Saturday and Nebraska Sunday. Arizona is 8-1, with their only loss being yesterday to Oklahoma 6-4. Northwestern is 4-4 with close losses to Utah, Tennessee, Arizona State, plus an 8-3 loss to Georgia and a win yesterday over FSU. Arizona State is 8-2 with 2 wins over Kentucky, 1 over Northwestern and losses to Tennessee and Western Michigan. UCLA will be the #1 ranked team in the nation by tomorrow. They are 9-0, including a 7-0 win over Alabama and 8-3 over Georgia. Nebraska is probably the weakest team of the group, with a 5-4 record and no games played so far against a ranked team.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. –The #14 Florida lacrosse team completed the upset of top-ranked and defending National Champions Maryland on Saturday afternoon, winning the game 15-14 after scoring with less than a minute to play. Doing so the Gators broke Maryland's 86-game home win streak and serve the Terps their first home loss since March 10, 2012. -- :p -- :D

This has been a pure softball thread until now.

Whenever I bring up that kind of point, someone always pipes in to tell me that it's standard procedure on the Gator Sports board. o_O

So my advice would be to just move on along, instead of wasting your time in pointing out the irrelevant obvious...

UF softball improved to 12-1 Wednesday with an 8-0 5 inning run rule victory over Jacksonville, who came into the game 7-3 with their pitcher tonight being a senior with a 4-1 record and 1.40 ERA. Natalie Lugo tossed a no-hitter for the Gators, while Kendyl Lindaman & Charla Echols hit HR's for Florida and Jordan Roberts contributed 2 hits. Big weekend coming up in Palm Springs, CA with 5 games against top notch competition.

UF softball improved to 14-1 Friday night with a come from behind 3-2 win over #25 Northwestern. It was a pitcher's duel for the first 5 innings between Natalie Lugo and Northwestern freshman Sydney Supple, the #10 rated played in last year's signing class. Rylee Trlicek relieved Lugo in the 5th and got out of a jam. But the Wildcats scored a run in the top of the 6th. Lindaman tied it with a solo HR in the bottom of the inning. In the 7th, the Wildcats scored another run to take a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the 7th, Cheyenne Lindsay led off with a single, Sophia Reynoso was hit by a pitch. Hannah Sipos sacrificed the runners to 2nd & 3rd and Hannah Adams delivered a 2 run walk off single for the Gator win.

Another big day for UF Saturday, as they play Arizona State at 5:30 ET, followed by a match with #1 UCLA at 8:30.

Last year the girls could pitch, but not hit.
Last year the boys could hit, but couldn't pitch.

Happily, this year so far, both are doing both.
Yeeee-Haawww

UF softball improved to 15-1 with a 4-1 win over #16 Arizona St., who came into the game 12-2. Natalie Lugo & Rtlee Trlicek again shared the pitching duties, with Lugo throwing the first 3.2 innings, Trlicek coming in with 2 runners on base. She gave up a hit that scored the tying run, then pitched 1.1 innings while the Gators took the lead. Trlicek walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the 7th and Lugo came back into the game to record the save, her 4th of the season. Trlicek ran her record to 7-0. UF got 7 hits and 3 RBI's, one each from Adams, Lindaman and Goddard. After a 30 minute break, UF will play #1 UCLA and will need to play their very best to have a chance. .

Regardless of what happens against Ucla it's been an outstanding weekend for the ladies. This team is young on the mound and should improve as the year progresses.

UF softball lost a 5-4, 8-inning thriller to UCLA late Saturday night, dropping their record to 15-2. Gators were outhit 13-4 for the game and played sloppy defense, committing 2 errors that led to 2 of UCLA's runs. The winning run came from 2 wild pitches, the first advancing the runner from 2nd to 3rd and the last one allowing the winning run to score. They finish up their weekend in California with a game at 11:30 vs. 6-7 Nebraska.

The softball team finished the weekend in Palm Springs, CA 4-1, 16-2 overall, by beating Nebraska Sunday 6-3. Natalie Lugo pitched the first 5 innings, giving up only 1 run while the Gators built a 5-1 lead. In the bottom of the 6th she gave up a walk and HR, was relieved by Katie Chronister, who retired the side. UF added a run in the top of the 6th and Lugo came back in to close out the game with a perfect 7th. Does she get credited with a win and a save??!!!

At the plate, Lindaman and Cottrill had 2 hits and an RBI each, while Echols and Roberts had 1 hit and 2 RBI each. Thje Gators are hit over .325 as a team so far, significantly better than last year. Tim Walton is using the whole staff approach to pitching, as the Gators don't have a stud, All-American type pitcher for the first time in his tenure. But so far it's working well.

#6 UF softball hosts 3 games against the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns starting Friday at 6 pm. All games are televised on SEC+. Louisiana is ranked 10th in the nation and is 12-4, playing a tough schedule. They split 2 games with #7 LSU 2 weeks ago, split 2 games with #8 Oklahoma State last weekend, took 2 straight games from Ole Miss last weekend and split 2 games with #3 Texas on Tuesday night. Their strength is pitching, as their 2 stud pitchers, both seniors, have a combined ERA of 1.43. This will be a tough test for the Gators and should be a fun series to watch.

Gators got off to a great start in their weekend series hosting Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, beating them 6-0 Friday night. Natalie Lugo threw the first 3.1 innings and Katie Chronister the final 3.2 to get credit for her first win of the season.UF's bats came alive against senior pitcher Megan Kleist, former 1st team All American at Oregon. Charla Echols had 3 hits and 2 RBI's, Kendyl Lindaman had 2 hits, including a home run, While Sophia Reynosos and Julia Cottrill each drove in a run. Gators are now 17-2, with the 2nd game in the series Saturday at 1 pm.

UF softball had horrible 2nd inning on the mound and in the field, giving up 5 runs, blowing a 4-0 lead on the way to losing the 2nd game of their series with Louisiana 7-5. Florida plated 4 runs in the bottom of the first, but in the top of the 2nd starting pitcher Rylee Trlicek gave up 4 hits, plus made a throwing error, as did left fielder Cheyenne LIndsay, allowing 5 runs before Elizabeth Hightower entered in relief. She gave up 3 walks an a run in her 1.1 innings. Dani Farley gave up 3 walks in 2/3 of an inning before Katie Chronister came in to settle things down, She pitched the last 3.1 innings, only giving up 1 run on a wild pitch. After the first inning the Gators did little on offense until the bottom of the 7th, when the 1st 2 batters got on with the top of the order coming up. But Florida only managed 1 run before making the final out.

Didn't Farley struggle before?
Farley came onto the team last year as a highly touted pitcher out of south Florida and just has not been effective. She can't consistently throw strikes and seems to have lost her confidence. This is the first time under Tim Walton that Florida hasn't had a stud, All-American type pitcher. We have a staff of 5 and he just has to piece games togetehr this year and hope the defense is strong and the offense scores enough runs.

For the 2nd day in a row, Florida's softball pitchers blew an early 4-0 lead, losing Sunday to Louisiana 7-6. Despite a 3-run HR from Kendyl Lindaman and a 2 run shot from Charla Echols, Natalie Lugo just couldn't hold the fort, giving up 11 hits and 3 runs in each of the last 2 innings. This is the best hitting Gator team since our national title years, but the pitching is going to keep us from being a serious challenger this year and is the reason we were pre-season #5 in the SEC. The Ragin' Cajuns are an excellent team, but when you score 17 runs in 3 games, you should not lose 2 out of 3. We're 17-4 now, with a midweek game against Florida Gulf Coast and then begin SEC next weekend, hosting Auburn.

Natalie Lugo (7-2) tossed a 4 hitter with 7 K's, 1 walk leading the Gators to a 3-1 win over Florida Gulf Coast (13-7), Freshman Baylee Goddard broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the 5th with a 2 run HR to push the Gators to the victory, improving their record to 18-4. UF opens SEC play this weekend, hosting Auburn in a 3-game series.

We've played a really tough schedule. I still believe this will help us in the back half of the season.
