Did the Orange Bowl Selection Committee play a role in the CFP Polls ?

When Penn State was ranked higher than Gators, many on this board doubted that UF would make a New Year Six Bowl.

Did the the Orange Bowl selection committee use back channels to influence the rearrangement of UF & PSU in the last CFP Poll ?

Selling tickets & sparking tourism is the Orange Bowl's reason for existing. College football fan bases "Traveling Well" is a thing of the past.

A half empty Orange Bowl would not show up well on national TV ! How many tickets will Virginia buy ?

If you were on the Orange Bowl selection committee, would you rather take a chance on Penn State fans coming down in droves or would you cater to the Gator fans in South Florida buying tickets to the game ?

No they would rather have a traveling team from up North. The Auburn win made them change things I think.

Also Penn State is Rose Bowl bound as long as OSU didn't lose regardless of where we were.

I've seen some projections of Wisky to the Rose Bowl. Not that it matters. The Sugar and Orange will both be SEC teams. We have a slim chance at the Sugar, because Georgia got beaten so badly, but objectively, it will come down to head to head and them having an 11th win. But Georgia did go there last year, Sugar might want a change, so it's not out of the question. As long as the Sugar doesn't opt for Bama (assuming they got back into the top 12), because then we would be screwed.

I want the Orange bowl. That is prime recruiting country, not New Orleans. We want a big game presence in South Florida. Preferably I would like a Notre Dame or Penis State opponent. Not many people will be interested in Florida obliterating a 4 loss unranked Virginia team, even if it is a NY6 bowl.

For the team, I would want Notre Dame. Makes it a BIG game and one we should win pretty easily. I want 11 wins, shows progress. Recruits are starting to really take notice, need to keep that momentum. Beating Notre Dame gets more attention than beating Virginia.

Personally, I want Virginia, because my boss has a BA from Virginia and an MA from Florida, and is jazzed for the game. Having a happy boss is a very nice thing.

grommit,

Totally agree !

Gators vs Notre Dame would be great !

Not sure, but I don't think the Orange Bowl's contract with ACC would allow that.

Sugar Bowl is highest ranked SEC vs Big12 after CFP-4 is filled.
UGA or UF vs Baylor

Orange Bowl - SEC vs Highest ranked ACC--Big10--ND, whichever is highest ranked.
UF or UGA vs ???

Yep, forgot about that. Virginia is pretty locked in.

Found this on Wiki:

-------------------------------------------
Three of the bowls have tie-ins with the specified conference champions in the years they are not hosting playoff semifinals:

  • Rose Bowl: Big Ten vs. Pac-12[3]
  • Sugar Bowl: SEC vs. Big 12[2]
  • Orange Bowl: ACC vs. Big Ten or SEC or Notre Dame [4]
When the conference champion is unavailable, the bowls invite the next-best team from that conference. The Cotton,[1] Fiesta[3] and Peach Bowls have no conference tie-ins;[3] as such, the best conference champion from the Group of Five ends up in one of those bowls if it doesn't end up in a playoff semifinal.[2]
-------------------------------------------

So Virginia should be in as the only 9 win team in the ACC, and the Orange has the choice of a Big 10, SEC, or Notre Dame.

Notre Dame played Virginia this year, so that's pretty unlikely, unless the OB decided to have a ND-VaTech, and that's a bad game even with ND in it. Although Tech travels really well...

But assuming it's Va, then the choice is Florida or Penn State/Wisconsin. Assuming the Rose takes PSU, I don't think the Orange would take a 3 loss Wisky over a 2 loss Florida, which will likely be #6 in the final playoff poll where Wisky likely won't be top 10. If the Rose takes Wisky, well, PSU is ranked lower than Wisky in the AP and coaches and might not be in the final top 12 in the CFP poll.

So long story short, Virginia and Florida looks like the winner.

Yep Wisky may go over Penn St to the Rose I guess.

One site says they have to take the highest ranked by the committee to play the ACC in the Orange out of those choices remaining.

Ok. WIki isn't definitive, so I can see that being true. But in that case, there must be a pecking order for choosing. Because everybody can't be required to take the highest rated team, it would lead to conflicts. So I will say that I am confident we get the Orange, and hoping we don't somehow get screwed.

Yep it looks like 99% chance we are going to the Orange Bowl. Penn State or Utah to the Cotton if Wisky goes to the Rose Bowl.

They need to fix the bowl slots. I mean Virginia? They won 8 games, and got thrashed in the ACC title game. I would rather have Boise, or Cincy. Hard to predict the outcome, but I don't see this being much of a game.

The Final/Correct Word.... ;)

The ACC-C goes to the Capital One Orange Bowl unless it’s in the College Football Playoff (Clemson), in which case the next-highest ranked ACC team will get in automatically......... (could be 9-4 VA 6-3 ACC, that got totally blown out by CU)
against the highest-ranked available Big Ten or SEC team, or Notre Dame.

Here's to hoping that UGly falls below UF in the rankings, putting UF in the Sugar vs Baylor and then VA vs somebody else other than UF,,, (UGly)....

I would not go to the Orange vs VA if the tickets were free.
In fact, I'd have trouble even watching it, maybe in the background at a sports bar...
