They weren’t patents. Patents come in two major categories - design and utility. They protect novel and useful ideas for use in the advancement of society in some new and unique way. The purpose is to incentivize innovation and reward advancement.
Ivanka was awarded 18 TRADEMARKS. A trademark is essentially logo/brand protection based on first use in a market of a brand, sub brand or specific product category used in conjunction with a previously registered Brand. It’s the step before you are granted a real registration.
Pick up some packages in your house. You’ll see little TM’s and R’s, If the TM is unique enough it’s probably an R in waiting. If it’s more of a generic term it’s likely going to be a TM forever. Example:
