The rankings don’t determine the matchups for the Playoff, though. Here’s how the teams stack up when it comes to who they’ll play in Rounds 1 and 2:

  • No. 1 seed: Oregon (vs. 8/9 winner)
  • No. 2 seed: Georgia (vs. 7/10 winner)
  • No. 3 seed: Boise State (vs. 6/11 winner)
  • No. 4 seed: Arizona State (vs. 5/12 winner)
Those 4 teams will receive first-round byes before playing the winner of the first-round games noted above.

Here’s how the first-round matchups look:

  • No. 5 Texas vs. No. 12 Clemson
  • No. 6 Penn State vs. No. 11 SMU
  • No. 7 Notre Dame vs. No. 10 Indiana
  • No. 8 Ohio State vs. No. 9 Tennessee
The first 2 teams out of the Playoff field were Alabama and Miami

The 5-8 seeds will host first-round games on Dec. 20 and 21. The quarterfinals will be played on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The semifinals will be held on Jan. 9-10 and the National Championship Game will be on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, in Atlanta

One tweak I think we will need is for the top 4 conference winners to be guaranteed a top 8 seed, rather than a top 4 seed.

It's not fair to the #1 seed that they would get what is often going to be the second or third strongest overall team in the round of 4. Plus that #5 seed is getting an easy path to the final 4 because they get the #12 seed at home, then travel to the #4 conference winner, a team that might not have even been one of the top 12 teams.

I'd also like to see the brackets reseeded each round, like the NFL does. That way we we don't always know what the next round games will be. If #12 beats #5, they play #1 in the next round rather than #4.

That is exactly what has happened and has Texas fans drooling. They are playing the Eleventh and twelfth best teams in this playoff.

I like the 4 highest conference champs being rewarded with the top 4 seeds. As far as reseeding I am not sure. In theory it should mostly equal out if the #5 to # 12 rankings are decent. Doing it NFL style only helps the highest seeds if there is an upset and doesn't help a lot with everyone thinking a #8 Ohio State is much better than their seeding. I think they probably keep the college basketball type bracket to avoid certain matchups too early in the playoff.

The top 4 conference champs getting me seeds will be the first major change before next year. This is a nightmare for them because the ACC and Big12 were exposed and are sending 🗑 to the playoff. The way the current system is, in the basketball world, would be the equivalent of saying Duke and North Carolina could never both be a one seed.

CFB has never, and will never, seek an actual national champion, they are too concerned with their socialist approach to things and being “fair”. Put the 12 best teams on the damn field and decide it. I don’t GAS who is won the Mountain West Conference.

I don't think they care about being fair or socialist. They need to keep football marketable outside of the SEC and Big 10. Who are the best 12 teams this year? Who knows? I think the 5 or 6 best teams are in. The rest are just decorative.

Maybe they change it but they need to reward conference championships somehow imo. Even the NFL does that with the divisions and conference record.

I guess if they go to 14 teams in 2026 there would be only 2 byes so maybe they go to just the top 2 conference winners getting those top 2 seeds. No way should a Big 10 etc. team that didn't win their conference should be getting a bye week over the SEC champion imo.

What would you think about making it a guaranteed top 8 seed rather than a guaranteed top 4 seed?

Indiana just shot themselves in the foot versus Notre Lame. Had a wide open receiver at the 5 yard line and just threw it into double coverage. Then they let those assholes run off a 98 yard run. 😂 Indiana was not ready for prime time. Neither one of these teams are going any further.

What did you expect. Indiana’s schedule was pathetic. The committee whiffed on this one and I don’t think it’s the only one.

I totally agree. Georgia is going to roast ND. That QB will be running for his life (sadly).
I have no love for UGly. But I hope they run them off the field and motorboat their titties in the process. Notre Lame is the most consistently overrated team in the country on a regular basis. Penn State was the same until they were forced economically to join a conference and play a schedule.

Notre Dame's defense is legit. It looks like Carson Beck won't play. Georgia is very physical on the line of scrimmage and while their offense isn't explosive, their QB is experienced and their line is very good. This year's Georgia team is excellent, but a step below the last few years, IMO. Maybe it's just my bias against the Bulldogs, but I actually think Notre Dame upsets them.

Hopefully. Sometimes I wonder if Beck being out could help GA.

Carson Beck is a special needs child. I would cringe if he was our QB. I think the Jorts blow them off the face of the planet. It all depends on how good their backup is. ND sucks balls.

And they still managed to play nobody.

We just saw our first game of a team that did NOT belong in the top 12 and that's Indiana. Average only giving up 71 yards rushing a game and finally play somebody and dude has 98 yards on 1 run. Average 40 plus points a game and have 3 the whole game until the last 2:30 minutes and ND gives you 14 points to run the clock out. Average 438 plus yards and game and have 131 with 6 minutes to go in the game and finish with 270 something like I said running the clock out. This was a complete joke of a game and I am by NO means a ND fan but did they match them up cause they both play in the state of Indiana. Got a feeling we might see some more teams getting run ruled Saturday.

Didn't really watch ND much this season but the Texas A&M early game and the defense handled them pretty well. I see USC scored 35 on them though. Mostly worried the GA defense may be too much for them.

It’s easy to clown on Cignetti as they looked pretty bad last night - truth be told I felt the game was unwatchable as I hate ND - but I don’t know of anyone at the P4 level who did more with less than he did. Yes their schedule was weak, but they still over achieved. The bad news going forward is they did not recruit particularly well or kill it in the portal, so this season may end up being his high water mark, but that should not take away from what he accomplished this season.

Notre Dame defense is a lot like Michigan's last year. They are legit. Game is in a dome which will help the dawgs. ND vs pups on the frozen tundra, ND would have huge advantage.

The least worthy team of being in the playoff is Jed Clempett. They are only there as a default, like a March Madness basketball seed mandatory for winning the Sun Belt Conference.
scUM should be in the playoff (and won the ACC title) but they didn't care about playing defense the entire season. 😂 That's their own fault.

Too early to shoot my mouth off but Clemson and the entire ACC proving they don't belong in the CFP.
Kinda like the 2 other teams that got run off the field

Well you can blame that on the ACC getting an automatic berth, Jed Clempett sucks balls. The game was much closer than it should have been, and that's on Texas. 😂
