Barnes leaving Vols?

The Barns joining cow-Chip Kelly at UCLA??? o_O

A B-Ball<>Phootball match made in AD heaven.... :D:rolleyes::D

Even when the rubber-dollie are able to hire 'creepy' coaches (Pearly-Barns), they have constant trouble with keeping them in no-Knox....

The Pac 12 is a lot weaker than the SEC is right now. UCLA is a Blueblood in basketball, they had the greatest run in history during the Wooden era.

Probably why it’s an intriguing location for Barnes. He’s a good coach and the PAC-12 has been basically crap for years..... not hard to rise above the other teams if you’re worth you’re salt. And it’s a blue blood school down on its luck

The downside is if Barnes wants to deal with LA

True. It's interesting how long UCLA has been down. It has everything you would imagine it would take to win. Recruiting base, history and a willingness to spend ( reported 5 million a year offer)

Barnes likes the more laid back and down home feel of Knoxville. At 65 he is winding down his career and the appeal of bringing UCLA back may be too enticing to turn down.

He could probably get UCLA back up to dominating the Pac-12 in a couple of years. The SEC is getting better and deeper each year. Plus to "prestige" of a basketball blue blood like UCLA compared to to toothless Rocky Toppers.

UCLA has better recruiting grounds. A more favorable league. UCLA cares more about basketball than football. It’s a blue blood, the tourney committee is going to be more favorable to them when seeding. L.A. is not the fishbowl Knoxville is, he can do like Chip Kelly and just mingle among the stars with all the resources around him.

Why does UCLA want a 64 r old coach that doesn’t do well in the tournament? They are a blue blood. They aren’t satisfied unless they are competing for championships. Really doesn’t make a lot of sense to me and would be a bad hire IMO.

It would kinda be like the real thing...

If UCLA wants him, he's gone. I think Barnes was a good hire for Cheatersee, but this was always the risk: If he started winning, better jobs would come calling.

And let's be honest: There are a LOT of better men's basketball jobs than Cheatersee.

I just love it. Any time the poor hillbillies get any little taste of success, relatively speaking of course - a good recruiting class, a couple of big regular season hoops wins - some cash drunk city slicker program comes waltzing in and snatches away their sweetheart coach only to dump them two years later, career in total ruin. Such a sad cliche.

Barnes bent Phat Phil over his desk

4.7 million ( good grief ) you could have had Mike White for half of that :D

It's official, Barne's is staying on ole rocky flop,,, the Mad-Dog-dollie climbs down off the roof.

Not sure why UCLA would chase Barnes. They would expect deep tourney runs every year. He hasn't shown he's capable of that.

UCLA hired Cincy coach Mick Cronin. Another guy who who has gotten to the NCAA tournament 9 straight years but hasn't advanced past the round of 32 since 2012.

UCLA has been making bad coaching choices starting with getting rid of Ben Howland. He got them to 3 Final Fours, but hit an up & down period, and then let him go. He’s only one of 8 active coaches who have been to an FF 3 times or more

Maybe Cronin will be the trick for them - don’t know, he is a solid coach..... but UCLA has stepped on their own peepee a lot

He runs a very physical style that may be a shock to Pac 12 basketball. Grind it out low scoring basketball.

Billy Donovan ruined Howland’s career at UCLA

Mick Cronin? If I was a UCLA booster, I’d be livid. That’s the best UCLA can do?
I thought it was a little premature how UCLA pulled the trigger on Ben Howland. They fired Howland for a 25-11 record. Granted there were some early exits from the tourney. Then again, I've seen our share of Gator fans who wanted to can Billy Donovan for the slump he had in the tourney from 2001-2005.

Not to make this too political but I wonder if California’s taxes and politics play into some of these coach’s decisions? Barnes making 4mil in L.A. compared to 4mil in Tennessee is a much different lifestyle and comfort level. If he’s got kids he wants to leave a healthy inheritance to, etc.

There was some crazy stuff going on between Howland and the players. I forget exactly what. But yeah. Bad move.

Well, even if their basketball sucks, they can console themselves with the fact they evidently have a very long "peepee".

This is the article on Howland. Sounds like a bad scene.
I totally forgot the lack of control Howland had with the program. It made sense back then. As he and Tubby Smith got fired, it seemed ironic in the One Shining Moment video with Smith and Howland shaking hands as the lyric "the time is short" is sung at the 59 second mark.

They are the basketball version of their football brother up the road at SC. All the tradition in the world but make some head scratcher hires. Like why did SC hire Kiffin, Drunk Sark, and so far Helton looks like a meh hire. When UCLA makes a good hire like Howland it's some gray areas like SC had with Carroll. With all that tradition and prep talent at their disposal they struggle to find a champion caliber hire that doesn't leave with dark clouds.
