I'm no fan of the NCAA and hate the one-and-done rule, but this sort of nonsense is ridiculous. Wendell Carter's mother, whose son just finished his one-and-done career, said the NCAA's system is the same as slavery (including the white man profiting, etc.)

So, let's go over the relevant facts:

1) Your son made a decision to attend one of the 20 best academic institutions in the country of his own volition--and had the choice of more than 1,000 different colleges to attend.

2) He received a fully paid year of tuition, room, and board, valued at somewhere between $75,000 and $100,000.

3) He received world class professional training from one of the greatest leaders in the world on the subject.

4) After one year of training, your son had the option (which he took) to walk away from the investment in him with no repercussions, to pursue a profession that will pay him a starting salary of approximately $5-7 million/year.

5) You attended the University of Mississippi, and received a full scholarship for four years to play women's basketball, which loses approximately $1 million/year for the university, paid for through the revenues of men's football and basketball.

Please explain to me how there is one scintilla of a relationship between slavery and college sports, other than the completely irrelevant fact that slaves were black and many college athletes are black.

And by the way, no other group has been helped more by college athletics than black athletes (men and women.)

You can make a case for sharing revenues, etc., but to try to use a slavery analogy is insulting to both history and the present and she should have been lambasted for such an idiotic statement. Of course, instead, she'll show up on a dozen talk shows.

Incidentally, Duke won exactly one more game this year than last year by using the slave talents of her son. They won't make a dime more or a dime less because he was on the team.
