2024-25 Basketball,,, all things considered...

Yep - I know a lot of Gator fans don't like Jeremy Foley for putting a higher priority on elevating the so-called minor sports to national prominence while allowing the football facilities to fall behind SEC standards. And yet during his tenure, there were hardly any issues that arose that brought embarrassment to the university and when they did he dealt with them immediately and definitively. I thought Scott Stricklin was a mediocre hire at the very beginning and my opinion of him has steadily gone downhill ever since.

Foley didn't elevate the all sports thing much. We we a top school in that before he took over. The clown just let facilities get behind back when that became a big selling point before all this NIL stuff. Even bragged we weren't getting into an arms race or some nonsense like that as it started hurting us in recruiting after Meyer.

Foley will never get credit for hiring Meyer. Bernie Machin ordered him to do so. I only wish Machin was actually the interim when Sasse resigned.

Yep Foley can be given credit for Billy Donovan but not Spurrier or Meyer as he didn't control the decision on either one of those hires. Spurrier even confirmed on a radio show that is the reason he didn't end up back at UF back then instead of SC because Machen was hiring Meyer 100%.

Just goes to show how lucky we were to have coaches who were great at their jobs and also high character individuals like Billy D and Spurrier. They don’t come around often. We got two of them.

Bill Arnsparger ultimately hired Spurrier before he went back to coaching. From what I heard, Arnsparger initially didn't want Spurrier.

Didn't know he wasn't a big fan. Spurrier was an easy choice though just like Meyer if Spurrier wasn't going to be rehired. Never remember a UF President asserting themselves that much in the coach hiring process though. If Machen didn't know Meyer from being at Utah Spurrier would have been a lock to return probably.

I think you're absolutely wrong, but am not going to spend the time to research the stats to prove it. I agree that he didn't prioritize keeping the football facilities up to high quality standards, but there's no doubt he was absolutely the key to keeping integrity in the athletics department for his entire tenure AND elevated the athletics department to the most consistent in the NCAA. They won 28 of their 48 team national titles under Foley's leadsership as well.

You have evidence of Machen giving him that order? The AD is responsible for hiring and firing coaches and while I know the Manchen ordering to hire Myer has been stated over and over from Foley haters, I've not seen any evidence that proves that.

I do know his list to replace Zook didn't include Meyer, but I can remember his list had Kirk Ferentz at the top of his list. The only proof I needed was watching Foley hiring Zook, Muschamp and McElwain. For some reason, Foley didn't want to hire Mullen in 2014.
If Mullen were hired in 2014, no way he brings in Grantham. He would have inherited not only a great defense but he would have inherited Will Grier, without the PED.

Machen liked Urban…rumor was that he asked Steve to submit a resume and Steve responded something like “your trophy case is my resume’.”

You you are correct that Machen didn’t “force” Foley to do anything…but he could have hired Steve if he wanted to…he wanted Urban and he made it happen however that went down…

As it turned out…it worked out pretty well for Florida…so although sadgator would have loved to have seen Steve 2.0, it just wasn’t meant to be, and sadgator is extremely content that he saw the mountaintop 2 more times in his lifetime…

Where is this list to replace Zook that you talk about? I've not seen it. Post the link so we all can look at it. So your answer to my original question is no. You have zero evidence that Machen told Foley to hire Meyer. You're like CNN and MSNBC. Jump to a false conclusion and say it over and over and hope people believe it. The FACT is that Jeremy Foley hired Urban Meyer and his job was to make that decision. If you have any evidence to show he was forced to do that, present it, please. Otherwise, STFU.

I was being a little MSNBCish. Okay, maybe a little extreme.

Didn't even take long for Sad Gator to get triggered by those two networks you mentioned.

When I first heard that I was in disbelief. My 5 year old grandson knew the resume of Steve Spurrier. I thought that was an insult and I am glad Spurrier answered it like he did.

It seemed like a difficult time in our history when Zook was fired and Steve was available but unlikely to return…we had no idea of the heights we would soon reach with Urban, nor the real lows we’d eventually see once Muschamp destroyed the soul of our program…

Yeah, I got a little carried away myself. I'm a huge fan and defender of Jeremy Foley and really get up in arms when people try to run down his tenure.

Yeah, that was common knowledge here (before several ownership changes, some of you guys are new) right after Zook got fired. Steve was ready to come home. We'll never know how that might have worked out. We might have won 4 more natties or might not have won any. I do think that if Spurrier had succeeded Zook instead of Meyer, the Gator ship would have sailed quite straight until he got sick of transfers and pampered babies. His venture at USCe was doomed from the start, they just don't have either the money nor recruiting base, much less legacy shine.

Gators didn't play great, but they sure played hard and won by 24. Dominated the 2nd half. Martin was a beast. Only 8 turnovers (5 by Clayton) and 16 assists. Owned the paint as well. Enjoy this one overnight and then start getting ready for a road trip to South Carolina on Weddnesday.

The SEC is a bloodbath but I think Auburn is going to be hard to beat for the SEC regular season crown. I could see them going 14-4 possibly even with that schedule.
