Gator Softball 2024

I've been thinking for a while now that the pen should be used a little bit more than they have been. Good to see Wooten get those 2 wins over the weekend...

If we could have gotten 1 experienced veteran from the portal, this team could challenge for the national title. Relying on 2 freshmen to carry the load, no matter that they were nationl players of the year, is just asking too much. I agree that going forward, Coach Walton should take more of a staff appraoch to games. There is film out there now on Rothrock & Brown and Wooten and Miller have proven that they can give a couple of innings each in solid relief.

Lack of acquiring portal pitching hurting both softball and baseball.

True - Basbeall more so. They're not even going to make the postseason.
Our best pitcher last year came through the portal so maybe this is true. However Sully has a whole roster of HS all American pitchers. If we’re incapable of developing them we need to look at why.

This is the SOFTBALL thread people. Baseball talked has leaked over.

Wednesday night, Gator softball gets run-ruled by FSU. 1 bad inning, with 3 errors and 3 different pitchers doomed them. Gotta regroup for Georgia this weekend.

Falby Shines Bright as #11 UF Defeats #12 FSU in Offensive Slugfest

The Gators and the Seminoles set the all-time single game record for runs scored in the series with 28 runs on Wednesday night. >>> UF 15 - 13 FSU in 9 innings.

Junior Kendra Falby turned in a career night
as she went 5-for-6 with the game-winning solo home run in the top of the ninth inning and turned the game-ending double play in the bottom of the frame.
That's the iG's girl / favorite softball player (Falby) to watch play....

Good weekend and good showing in SECT we might sneak into top 8. Certainly way above what everyone thought pre-season. Ocala, somewhere on this thread you had our preseason sec rank, I can't find it.
We were picked 8th. As it stands now we will finish somewhere between 2nd and 4th.
The series with Texas A&M is Friday at 7 pm on SEC+, Saturday at 2 PM on SECN, Sunday at 1 PM on ESPN2.

Yes he did. And(not to sound conceited) I believe I said there is no way we finish that low. But to be fair I blew the baseball prediction all to he!!.

Gator softball had an 8-2 lead after 2 innings against Texas A&M, then the Aggies clawed back and finally tied it in the top of the 7th 8-8, only to have Florida get a walk off 1-out single from Jocelyn Erickson in the bottom of the 8th to win the game 9-8. This win guarantees Florida the #2 seed in the SEC tournament. If they win again Sunday, 1 pm on ESPN2, they will finish 2 games ahead of Texas A&M, who will finish 3rd. If A&M wins Sunday, they will tie the Gators for 2nd in the final standings. Quite an accomplishment for a team picked to finish 8th riding the arms of 2 true freshman pitchers.

SWEET IS THE SWEEP, 11-3 6th Inning Run Rule win....
Incredible finish to the season for the Gators. 6-2 vs. Top 15 teams, ending with 5 straight wins. This MAY put us in the position of being a Top 8 seed for the NCAA Tournament. Amazing job done by Tim Walton and his staff. Keagan Rothrock is maturing every time out and the team is getting better and better at hitting against high quality pitchers. Finished the SEC in 2nd place, 2 games ahead of 3rd place Texas A&M.

As I suspected early in the season:

Rothrock is Kelly Barnhill 2.0 (70 mph)

Brown is Lauren Haeger 2.0 (HR hitter)

A bright future for Gator Softball....

Yep - And Olivia Miller, another freshman, who hasn't pitched much this year but does have 2 perfect games against weaker teams, was the #16 rated pitcher in last year's class and will be a contributor nexet year. AND we have another elite high school pitcher coming in next year - Red Oxley from Bartow, who was Dairy Queen POY in 2023 as her team won the 6A state championship. In addition we have 4 other elite players, 2 infielders, 2 outfielders, who will all compete for playing time next year. We lose Skylar Wallace and Katie Kistler and 4 other players with great attitudes who disn't play all that much this year who have graduated - Pitcher Mackenzie Wooten who was a 1 year grad transfer from Virginia, Avery Goelz, Emily Wilkie & Baylee Goddard. Only 2 starters to replace and much more competition for playing time next year. Take at a look at our incoming freshmen:
Taylor Shumaker tore up travel ball last summer and is supposedly a beast. Layla Lamar is the daughter of Duke's softball coach and is a solid infielder who can hit for average and power. Townsen Thomas is as fast as Falby, hit over .600 in high school. Gabi Comia has been a trtemendous hitter for average, has speed and is supposedly an excellent shortstop. I think next year's Gator team will be considerably better than this year's team. And depending on whether or not we get any portal players, only Falby and Korbe Otis will be seniors next year. The future looks very bright.

The Gators 43-12, (17-7 for #2 in SEC) in 55 regular season games.
They have gone 17-8 vs Top 25 Opponents.
They have gone 9-3 vs Top 10 Opponents.

The iG's favorite player, CF Kendra Falby ended season ending game 2-for-4 at the plate.
That was for her team-leading 25th multi-hit game of the year.

SS Skylar Wallace, last years SEC PoY is now on a 4-game hit-streak after going 2-for-3 with a HR and a double. That was her 19th multi-hit game of the year.
And Skylar also finished #6 in NCAA in stolen bases with 32.
(FL was #1 SEC and tied at #21 for average team stolen bases per game with 1.87)

C Jocelyn Erickson drove in the game-winning with a three-RBI double that ended the game.
It was her team-leading 21st multi-RBI game of the year.
She is now riding a six-game hit-streak.

The Gators finish with the Top 4 individual Batting Averages in the monster SEC.
1. LF Korbe Otis .455 UF
2. CF Kendra Falby .407 UF
3. 3B Reagan Walsh .403 UF
4. C Joxelyn Erickson .389 UF
5. Amari Harper .386 aTm

Note: LF Korbe Otis earned her 2nd SEC Player of the Week award en route to helping the Gators to a 4-0 record this week against Top 25 opponents.
Keeping in mind that those stats tell you just how tough the SEC teams are to hit against, and how good those Lady Gator's are at the plate....

The Gators are #8 in the nation and #1 the SEC in Team Batting Average at .344
#2 (25) in the SEC is MsSt at .317, with #3 (38) aTm at .309

Just a FYI:
Leading the nation in batting average, but not playing vs SEC competition yet are:
1. Okla at .372
2. TX at .371
They join the SEC in Softball next season (2025), so the SEC just gets even tougher....

Other Top 50 batting average Florida schools:
6. FSU .347
30. FL A&M .313
40. UCF .308
